Should I get a life time sub?

LordZonLordZon Member Posts: 43

I'm really tempted.  This game rocks.

I have to actually use my brain in space combat.  Ground combat involves an entire away team.  I get to customize and design my ship and crew individually.  So much fun.

I've stopped playing the beta to wait for release, so I don't spoil anymore.

Anyone with me?

If your really sure that you'll be wanting to play the game for the next few years then go ahead.. personally i wouldnt do a lifetime sub on a game unless i'd been playing it for at least 6 months and knew that it was what i really wanted.  Cautious i guess, but you know the old saying buy in haste and regret at leisure!

I'll be honest, I dont believe a lifetime sub is worth the cost. I dont know of any game released within the last 2 years I could say "My game 4 life". Fact is, so many new games are being released each year that its tough to anticipate where you ill be 6 months from now

Depends on you actually, if you can tell right now after limited play time that you'll be thrilled with this game for the long haul, then go for it as its a great deal.

In my case, only a small handful of games that I've played have gone past the 6 month mark so it would have been a bad deal for me.

I recall purchasing a LotRO lifetime sub before launch because I thought I liked it.  Fortunately started having misgivings around the end of the 1st month and switched it over to a monthly rate and I quit the game 2 months later, so no regrets.

I've been playing EVE for 2.5 years now, love the game and yet, won't pay for more than 3 months in advance (I normally pay monthly on everything)

The term "you'll regret it" comes to mind, but it's your decision.

I got a lifetime.  The game is a blast even in beta with it's bugs, up and down server status and nit-wits who haven't the slightest idea of what an MMORPG is.

The way Cryptic and Paramount has set the game up will allow for endless expanse and perhaps even the old feeling of a true MMORPG back in the days before we had the WoW MMO not RPG games.

My only regret is that it will take a year or two for things to fully expand out before the game really takes full flight and perhaps even leaves the rest in the dust.  Playing an MMORPG isn't about graphics, looks or game control, it's about immersion in the world that has been created.  STO has done some great steps and they aren't even out of the gate yet.

I thought besides getting the borg to play and more charecter slots:  It is the same thing as paying for 15 months of game time.

That it is.  But once the 15 months is up, you can keep playing and playing and playing without ever having to pay another subscription fee again.  I personally did it to convey my thanks to Cryptic for making a great game.  I could careless about the borg or character slots.

Unless.. you didn't like the product in the first place and never played more than 1 month...

You know.. they are litterlally offering you to buy a product without you even knowing if it runs on your PC.  And you think thats smart ?

"Then why would you buy it?"  Did you not catch the fact that I am playing it and enjoying it very much? You are correct, I'd never buy and hope but since I am playing (and testing it in beta) I've found it to be exceptional already hence, the reason I paid up for a lifetime.  I think it's that well done and that creative that a lifetime subscription is a deal and well worth it for both me and a nod to the developers.

Do you honestly believe that you will play this game 16 months to reap the benefits of the lifetime sub?  I guess if you feel the game is that great in its current state then go ahead and spend $290 for it, I dont

No, don't ever buy a lifetime sub to any MMO. I've played a lot and even though I can tell you that I absolutely love this game right now I've been there before. You never know how your going to feel about a game 3-6 months down the road so you may be setting your self up for a serious fall. I would highly advise against it.

That's my attitude as well. But if people think they will be playing this game for two years and they really want to do it I don't see anything wrong with giving people the option. But I would advise against it because the game could change many different times and it might not be for the better.

Yeah!  Wouldn't you?  I mean, that's the point of an MMORPG not a single player game.  I'm kind of shocked at that question.  Any MMORPG can expect to play a game for well over a year, most several years.  Let's see my UO lasted five years, SWG was four, EQ was several, EQII maybe that one lasted about a year, Eve about a year, CoH/V about three or four years, WoW three or four, hmmm...there are others.

Why play an MMORPG if you aren't going to stick around for years?  It takes years to really appreciate one of these games.  But then, you drop the RPG off and you just have a Massive Multiplayer Online game.  An RPG is "Role Playing" which requires you create a character(s), gather friends (real ones not those online friendship things), explore the game and all it's nooks and cranies, join a guild or ten, float back and forth between sides, grow to hate and then love and then hate the devs, plan your next vacation around a day or two of playing.

I mean, really, can this all be done in a few months?  Hardly.  If you want something that only lasts a few months go try out one of those awesomely fantastic first person shooters that everyone has hooked up to their flatscreens now.

And your right, I know what I like and I don't have to think twice.  I think the game is worth it and knowing Cryptics record, I have no doubts that it will be a great game.  But I've played some that should never have existed and I'd wished I'd never have downloaded the trial too.  But then I hated them from the point I tried the trial so I never went further, do people actually play games they can't stand and pay for it?  Is that what you mean?

I always pay 1 month recurring, sometimes I end up feeling like I've had enough then cancel before getting charged again. I've only ever paid for 6 months before (in SWG) which was $77, because it was a time when I was on the road alot and wanted to play on the laptop that I took with me and so that I didn't have to bother accessing security sensitive sites.

I feel the same way as most of the above posters, I always have doubt that I'd be playing for as long as 12 months straight.

You'd better make darn sure you're comfortable with the current content and if that's going to satisfy you a year from now. I wouldn't expect a huge leap in content although MMO companies always promise it.

JMHO but I see a lot of people feeling like dupes a month or so from now wondering why they paid for a lifetime sub when they can barely bring themselves to log on.

As much as I've loved LotRO over the past 8 months, I still can't imagine buying a lifetime sub for it,  and if I end up paying more than a lifer sub for it before I'm done I'll still not regret my decision.

On the other hand, if I had paid for a lifer sub for most of the MMO's I've played and enjoyed, I'd have regretted it immensely.

I would consider a couple of things:

    - do you really, really like the game?

    - does the lifetime subscription include future expansions? or will you have to pay for more content anyway?

    - will there be a cash shop? you might be able to get the same goodies later (Borg for example) without the lifetime sub

    - do you think another game might come out that you will move to?

    - do you have plenty of money?

No, I mean that you can start to play a game and think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but 3 to 6 months down the road you'll realize that it's starting to get old. I've played too many games that have been this way for me to ever think about getting a lifetime sub to anything. Right now I can see myself playing STO for well over two years and that's great but I may change my mind 6 months from now because it's happened before too many times. MMOs are like this for the most part. It's the honeymoon syndrome. You fall in love and get married and the honeymoon period is great but 6 months later you realize that you may have made a terrible mistake. The break up is nastier if you have a long term commitment rather than a casual relationship.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with STO. Quite the contrary, I absolutely love the game... right now. I've just been around MMOs long enough (EQ1 and OU) to know that lifetime subs are NEVER a good idea.

First let me say that I bought the lifetime subscription to LOTRO. I enjoy LOTRO immensely. But I will never buy another Lifetime sub to a game.  Why? I feel as though I've lost all power in my ability to shape the direction LOTRO -- I can't unsub if I dislike the direction the game is going.  If LOTRO pulled an SWG:NGE style change, I'd be virtually powerless to show my disgust.

    That's my 2 cents.

I didn't think of it that way.  Good point!

Good thing you didn't buy a lifer sub to Auto Assault, eh?
