How is that boycott of Modern Warfare 2 going?

GruntyGrunty Member EpicPosts: 8,657

Not too good apparently.  $1,000,000,000.00 in sales.

Yeah, pretty much everyone who said they would boycott and etc bought it anyway.

I've played it at friends places and while it is fun the annoyance of not having dedicated servers and how many flaws the system they are using now has, is enough to annoy me into not buying it myself.

btw... isnt this old news? not the numbers that you just gave, but that the boycott was a huge fail was pretty much known a week or so after it was released if not sooner.

Not that I'd heard. Those that lose rarely post their loss.

Well population wise xbox 360 > ps3 > pc.  This was not the case with Modern Warfare 1.  No dedicated servers on PC sucks because of the modularity in people's systems and the hackers.  On console it is at least an even playing field.   Still I have it for PC and PS3, and if I still had my 360 I would have it on that too.  It's a badass fps.

    This summarizes it pretty well.

Dunno when this was taken, but it wasn't long after the boycott was announced, and in general is a good show of how it went as a whole.

Worked just as well as the L4D2 boycott.

I don't really know why anyone would boycott the game (and that never works).

I have it on 360 but I got it just to play multiplayer. The only thing that really pisses me off about the game is the fact they blocked party chat in the game. So you can't go in with your friends in party chat and have fun working together. I guess they did it to try and make the whole team of strangers work together but it doesn't happen, now instead of having groups of friends work together nobody even talks the whole match.

I hope they change that stupid feature but other then that I enjoy the game.

Was obvious that the console folks wouldn't boycott it. If thats how you think online fps are ment to be played you won't even get what the pc community is bitching about. I can imagine the boycott from the pc community could backfire, imagine infinitytard sees how the game sells less on pc than expected and is a huge hit on consoles they might just say FU to the pc community... not like they seem to care much.

I didn't buy it on the PC purely because i felt the price was way too expensive for a pc game, but i did buy it on the xbox360, although only because i got it for half price so figured it was worth it for $20.  I have got friends who have bought it on the pc and they say its good except that the matchmaking system is crap, same as it is on the xbox!

End of the day most of the game publishers are producing games for all 3 platforms - PS3, xbox & PC - and when they do this it means essentially that PC owners are getting a ported version, gone are the days when PC owners felt the love of publishers delaying a game for a month or 2 so that they could make a proper PC version.  This game just confirms in my eyes the death of the PC format as most people own a console and the average person off the street nowadays will buy a console and not a pc for games.

so, basically what your saying is, that while the game is good on the console, it never really got anywhere on PC, which only reinforces the fact that poor console ports dont  do all that well on PC. just imagine how much more money they could have made if it had been a decent console port...

I'm trying to read that article and find out how a comparison to PC players alone.

I can't seem to find that info but maybe I need to read it again.

I hardly play the FPS genre, mainly a RPG player here, so I didn't plunge towards the game.

Why is it so popular? Due to the brand and marketing? Looks like I gotta go buy it after all, just to see what's all the fuss about, and go see Avatar while we're at it, so I'm not so behind of everything. The game just seems overly pretty, basic shooter with some fancy UI additions, more in the e-sport direction with points popping on the screen when you kill someone, like some arcade game. Is it the single player campaign or online play that attracts people?

Not that it counts for much but I'm still boycotting it.

Boycotting and waiting for bfbc2 and leaving the franchise forever!

No boycott here, just not buying it til they support dedicated servers.

  • SquishemSquishem Member UncommonPosts: 10

I heard about the Server dilemma for PC's so i didn't buy it right away. I still wanted to try it without having to get a xbox or ps3 so I did the next best thing my friend who owns it suggested. Download a cracked version and play single player!  =)

They already pretty much said that. Big reason I never bothered with the game. I don't care if they dont make any more PC games, personally.

Most of the people I know that enjoyed MW for PC did not buy #2 for pc.

    The Xbox/PS3 people did though.

  • Kaliber13Kaliber13 Member Posts: 39

Ofcourse the boycott didnt work. Most gamers were probably too scared to go out by a gamestop or walmart with signs and protests. You dont boycott by sittin in a chair typin furiously like a mad man.... Gotta get more organized. maybe nest time.

I will never buy or play their rubbish ever again.I have never seen such a poor job of  supervising a product.

Cheating is rampant,Neither publisher or Infinity Ward or Steam give a care at all, just keep the money rolling and their all happy sipping Pina Colada's.

The series will not die, because as seen over the years the amount of immature people that love to cheat in games is astronomical. So they will have tons of those immature people buying up their games. For me it is just like the game WOW,tons of immature players,i am glad they are all in the same game bothering each other and not me.

What bothers me  is not only the cheating but Infinity Ward has not a clue how to make a realistic war game,i saw so many ridiculous ideas it was laughable. However when you have millions of players that just go in and cheat and do not really care about anything realistic, just winning at a game, then i guess nobody really cares about the product.

When i mention how stupid and unrealistic the melee combat is, i get responses like "I don't care,it works great for me so i love it".So in other words  poor game mechanics don't matter as long as they  allow me to win...sad..

Not played any of their games since CoD2 on PC.

    Didn't buy L4D2 either ^^

Currently playing: WAR/AoC free trials. WoW.

Played: DaoC, Pre-NGE SWG. Legends of Cosrin. DDO until Unlimited.

Tried: EvE, EQ2, Fallen Earth, Global Agenda, TiTD, CoH/CoV, Matrix:Online.

You're numbers include all platforms, and really only the PC gamers had the boycott.  I ready on one of the gaming blogs that PC sales were very low for MW2 compared to every other CoD before it.  So I don't think the PC boycott was total fail.

Personally, I have played every PC-release CoD that has been released up until MW2.  I don't think they are phenomenal games or anything, but they are passably fun for a week or two.  But I sure as hell didn't buy that overhyped console port called MW2.

From the price to the non-dedicated servers and everything in between, IW and Activision has given a big F-U to PC gamers.  And no offense to those who like console FPS, but in my own opinion, they are total junk.  I have my 360 and I enjoy a number of great titles on it, but I never could understand the appeal of FPS on consoles.  It's like showing up to compete in a formula 1 race with a Kia.

So yet again another developer and IP dumbed down to the console level, destroys a franchise but makes insane amounts of money.  I think WoW is really missing the boat here.  I think they really need to release on consoles to complete their total devastation of the MMORPG genre.

I boycotted and I still don't own the game.

Every other PC gamer I know who boycotted, still doesn't own the game either. As other's have mentioned, that link includes all sales and there was no reason for the console players to boycott. The boycott was for the PC gamers, who don't want to see half assed console ports to their platform.

We pay alot more money for our rigs, than the console players and we do it because we want a different and more customizable experience from our games, over the console players. MW2, does not give the PC gamers what they want. It may be a great game on the consoles, let them have their game. I think the ideas for the servers are a great thing for consoles, but we PC gamers want a different experience not the same game, compiled differently.

If we were talking about a indy developer, maybe that's asking alot. But, this is a huge corporate game producer and they should be aware of why people play PC games over Console games if they want to sell it to our markets. If they stop making games for PCs all together (which they might as well have), we still aren't going anywhere. I'm a PC gamer through and though, I may buy a console, but I'm still a PC Gamer.
