Began playing 3 months ago, loved the concept.
Rolled an Assassin and got my rear end handed to me in all pvp situations until i hit around level 40. The 1st designated battleground known as the "Abyss" is a nightmare for assassins, a melee class versus aerial sorcerers and rangers.
Also played a spiritmaster (Spitting image of a World of Warcraft Warlock) and a Ranger. All 3 were REALLY FUN to level
Why it's a horrid game - - -
Absolutely 0 end game content. Legions (Guilds) in this game are almost not required to do anything. Essentially this is the game ( You quest, when there are quests available, and return to old hubs every time you level to find new ones because there is no quest guideline from the NPC's. )
At 50, you can do 1 of 3 things. You can grind your level 50 armor set which requires a ridiculous amount of wealth which is VERY difficult to make (I'll cover that soon)
#2 You do a pvp event known as Dredgion which is a 6v6 PVPVE situation that is fun the first one and a half times you go in. Its pretty ridiculously stupid, same strat every time, and team with the most spiritmasters win (Not a joke, unbreakable AOE fear with aggressive mobs in rooms the size of restaurant bathrooms bearing 10 people inside of it.)
#3 An instance called Dark Poeta, great idea for an event (Not sarcastic) The better you do, the more your time is extended the better the possible drops.
Keep in mind, the 1st instance worth grinding in this game has a 5 hour cooldown, divided into 3 sections that become progressively harder. That being said, the 1st time you enter, you're too low to do the other 2 sections so you're stuck counting the holes on you're cheap ceiling until the cooldown comes back. You're lucky if you have quests at this point that you haven't done 50 times, or are able to solo.
Currency - New game, new economy, understandable that stuff is a fortune. But stuff being sold by NPC's themselves are ridiculous. Here's a story about currency - the Aion economy - and my experience.
I started a craft called Weapon Smithing. Crafts are inexpensive to level. Basically, you can level them for almost free from these in game quests called work orders that you can purchase raw materials from an npc 3 feet away, craft the work order and skill up off of it. Every profession has an EXPERT quest, which is ridiculous to get lucky and achieve. After spending close to 30 million kinah (The name of Aion's currency), I broke my cap. Expert allows the crafting of "Epic" items and weapons. Thinking i was in the clear and finally would be able to make some weapons, I was wrong. I collected materials to craft 97 attempts at weaponry from the expert levels. I failed ALL of them. I never achieved 1 epic quality (gold) weapon. It takes roughly, 5-6 hours to collect and prepare materials to craft 1 weapon. No lie.
Since i've started playing this game. I did 4 different instances from 25 to 50
In total, i've ran these 4 instances close to 300 times. Not each, i mean in total
Not 1 item of blue (Decent quality) had dropped in ANY OF MY RUNS
Drop rate in Aion is less than 1%
Alot of players turn to world boss killing and camping time of deaths for loot. These too have a 1-2% drop rate. Ive seen people spend 5-6 weeks camping the same monster that requires 6-7 ppl to kill it. And have it only drop currency. Enough currency to make the teleport to the region you went to kill this monster worth it.
Aion has the potential of being an INCREDIBLE game. The upcoming expansion is adding very little game content and spending most of their efforts to increasing graphics. I don't think i've ever foudn myself so discouraged to reach level cap in any MMO i've played. I literally stopped leveling at 49 from the fear of it being over.
My opinion, i give this game a 3/10 and would recommend maple story over it for game content purposes.
I place it under Age of Conan and under Warhammer
Comments
i played for 2 months when it frist came out so i know that everything you said is 100% true...and the drop rates suck, the bots are everywhere, the kinah money spammers will totally flood your chat box.... most of the problems in the came could be fixed very easily i think ......why ncsoft doesn't want to fix them i don't know i think their kind of lazy like that....
Have to remember NC soft is a business, just like every other MMO creator.
If someone gets a trial CD key and spams to sell kinah all day, what good does it benefit NC soft BUSINESS WISE to ban them right away?
Sure it would be better for us the users, but this is a new game. Just because it bears the name NC soft doesn't mean they can dip into funding from Lineage II to help it survive.
That being said, if they allow a free trial user to spam for 1 month, and have them purchase a key or game time thinking (Hahaha admins from game no ban me i keep sell kinah fast delivery) and pay 13 bucks to do that. Might as well ban them after 35 days of play instead of > 30
Also, if they banned people because of a handful reports w/o research or confirming the allegations , they might ban a someone who was just kidding around, or falsely accused.
Honestly, I played FFXi for almost 5 years. I loved that game so much. But the incredibly pitiful customer services from the sub contract company PLAY ONLINE was so terrible, that alone resulted in a HUGE loss of clientele. Next were the Gil sellers, which POL didn't do anything to resolve , after 3 years of complaints. At least NC soft is already acting on the requests.
Don't get me wrong, I don't play WoW anymore, nor would I ever go back to it. But hands down, it was the best MMO made for it's time and hold a huge standard. It offered great PVP, GREAT PVE, had the most amazing customer service I have ever seen. And I'm not just talking about MMO's -- i mean ever. My own phone company doesn't offer the same CS Blizzard does.
I think NCsoft has the potential of saving Aion, but those who really know what they want from an MMO are going to leave Aion, and not come back.
Trial users can't get past level 7 and can't use global chats until level 10, I think it's a pretty recent change, unless I'm wrong.
ok I have to disagree with you on some things.
1. Pvp in this game is more stratigic than most people think. SM are awesome but fear is not that powerful. All you need is one Alter releasing potion and fear is not an obstacle. The only really lame think about PVP is the higher level gankers. But you can avoid them most times.
2. Drop percentage is bad in this game but its for good reason. If mobs always dropped items then crafting would not have worth. Crafted items are (most times) better than dropped so instances are mostly for quests and xp. In the last big patch they increased the drop percentage in some instances.
3. I never played AOC but this game is better than Warhammer. In Warhammer it took no time to level and end game was taking over the same forts over and over again. If the area was locked you couldn't even pvp. So imo this game is better than WAR.
Sorry you didn't enjoy the game, the people you played with, the customization, the holiday events, your community etc. There is so much more to an MMO than drops and how fast you can level. I wish people could see that.
A valid point. You make friends and get lost in the world. But then again this is a game. Not a chatroom.
There will always be people trying to rush to max level, this is not news for anyone. Adding instances, money and time sinks is vital if a game is to survive for an extended period of time. I´m sure more content will be added ofcourse and perhaps with more to do the game will rise again.
All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.
I completely understand where you're coming from.
I use to care about the people and the magic and community more than the game. Then *STRICTLY MY POV* I woke up and realized that no matter what it's still a game.
But that goes hand in hand with what i said. There is ALMOST NO end game content. And fortress sieges are just pure mayhem. How do you develop ties with people if there's nothing to do.
And yes, the PVP in this game is really good and requires good tactics. But it needs more then that......... What if I hated PVP? I just spent 3 months leveling for nothing to do.
I like both aspects of an mmo.
I'd just like to say to the OP that I'm not sure how much credibility I can place on what you've said based on some simple things that are clearly lies.
1) You said you ran instances 300 times, and that you never got a blue item because the drop rate is 1%. If this is 1% per mob or 1% per instance this still makes literally no sense.
2) You said you tried to make an epic weapon 97 times, and that it takes 5-6 hours per weapon to collect and prepare mats. Really? Because that's 533.5 hours. That's completely ridiculous- that's 22 days of straight playing - I've not played that many hours in total.
3) You've seen people spend 5-6 weeks camping the same boss? That's half the time you've supposedly been playing. Again, that's not possible - especially seeing as how much time you spent collecting mats!
So if you lied/exaggerated about these how can I know everything you've said isn't exaggerated?

I don't know you, but I'll assume a less pessimistic approach and take you for your word. I too played this game and came to much of the same decisions...especially concerning the abyss. Much of these things will be corrected. I guess my problem with Aion was exactly what it's gotten a somewhat sullied reputation for: grinding..for xp and for gear. I also thought the crafting was pretty pathetic too..but that is something that can be corrected. It is realtively young after all. I merely worry about the time sink...which is possibly something that will never change. I just hope they listen to other audiences aside from their Korean gamers who are possibly perfectly fine with the grind.
i played it at launch, loved it to death until i hit around mid 30's and got extremely bored from the quest grind and the not as fun as i expected pvp.
not burnt on the game it was fun while it lasted and have no hard feelings. just didnt have any lasting appeal to me

No, the only real lame thing about PvP in Aion is the fact that it is based on equipment. For a game where the end-game is supposed to revolve around PvP it is completely ridiculous and unbalanced. For those of us who are/were playing SM and Cleric, the current system makes it near impossible to obtain high-end PvP gear just for the sheer fact that you need medals from sieges. So yea, while high level gankers may seem like a problem, they are only a tip of an iceberg.
I've not got to that lvl yet but how does getting medals differ from getting abyss points? Because clerics seems to be pretty good at getting AP (the no.1 on both elyos and asmo are clerics)

yep in asia this game will be big or probably is f2p grind but in a p2p format perfect since asian love to brag about stuff
like ho men took me 22 month for that item to drop!etc kind of thing!they love it when item are very hard to get
that garanty them not many will have the Z item since the grind is so hard, and the fact aion stuff is very random is ridiculous
say you grind for a higher lvl item so you craft craft
but that was just the req to make the higher version
its like vanilla wow but way more
you make s1 armor then to get season 2 armor you need s1
but season one isnt freaking random to begin with
then it get better because once you finally got the s1 item that fucking item doesnt garanty you ll get the s2 elite crafted item
you could just end up with a very expensive pair of glove lol instead of season 2 elite glove
and at 1%proc RATE
you ll craft 100 s1 regular glove to get 1 elite
but then you ll craft another 100 s2 elite using the s1 elite as a req to make the season 2
hell some item are so random its a contest of futility .
believe me some player will brag about some item and some are so hard and rare to craft
they got the right to brag about those item
Its possible i might be off by a bit because I didn't keep record. But not by much.
Of course there were times i purchased alot of materials to craft, I didn't farm them all. Farming platinum coins and selling them for profit to buy materials turned out to be faster then farming the materials themselves.
Literally nothing has dropped in any of my instance runs. I really mean it.
And yes, I've been off of work for 2.5 months due to injury
Im up at 7 am and i sleep at midnight. I cant leave my home and i cant even go up and down the stairs atm
I spend about 75% of my day on my computer atm because i really don't have a choice
And everything i said, is 95% accurate
To the OP, seriously the Assassin is the best along with ranger to play in the abyss solo, ive played a sin since release. You pick your fights on the ground, sounds like maybe you picked the wrong class.
Lol ok
Because a ranger and a sorc have never ever flown above your head while doing a quest or farming guards right?
Sure if i get the jump on someone or catch them off guard in the abyss on the ground that's one thing. Stick me in a rift and i can sped 5 hours in Belusia farming 20k AP.
If you get caught off guard, as an Assassin, in the abyss, on the ground, you are dead. So dead, that you most likely wont even get close enough to your opponent to hit him

You just found the core principle of a gank class. You own if you get the jump and you loose terrible if not.
A templar/healer for example cant desintegrate things fast but they are hard to take down.

Exactly.

You get medals by taking and defending forts.
To elaborate on that one. You get medals based on the rank you place during a siege. Your rank is determined based on how many AP points u get during the fortress instance compared to everyone else who participate in the same instance.
Thanks for the info - I have a question then @Kuraphimaru, how is it that clerics/SM can't get high-end PvP gear if clerics are top of the abyss rankings ?

Yeah I'm wondering that too, if you go on the Aion forums and examine many of the level 40-50 clerics' armory, alot of them has quite nice gear, plenty of HP/MB/phys def.
Rift PvP was great fun...Abyss PvP was not so great. The game is a horrendous Korean grindfest after level 30. I really wanted to like the game it looked so good at the start (first 20 levels). Also, bots and spammers ruined the game as well. The Korean companies have much to learn about the western markets.
Everything in life and games can be deduced to some kind of "grind". Tier gear? Quests? Gathering? Traits? So tell me how do you get to max level in this so-called fabulous game of yours.
I think you need to come to terms with the fact that the game was never for you from the start. That doesn't mean it's not good, it means it just doesn't satisfy your personal needs.
Take me for example: I started enjoying the game at level 30. Before lvl20 it felt very restrictive, linear, and just another themepark MMO with pretty graphics.
It's faaaaar from a Korean grindfest, I don't think you've ever played one before. You've got a lot of things to do ingame, if you see it as a Korean grindfest it's because you're playing it as such. Mindless solo grinding. Its leveling curve is perfect as far as I'm concerned, not too easy nor too steep. The levels fly by when you're enjoying the game overall.
As for bots and spammers, they're barely noticeable anymore, and are in no way ruining anyone's game experience as it stands.
Aion is not the game for you, give it a rest! xD
I agree on the rift part - rifts are so awesome - it's not often that I will log into the game and not go through a rift. I do think the abyss is good but I can see why it could lose appeal - I actually think that mid 30s is the best point in the game for PvP (even though i've not got further ^^) because there are so many rifts available, where you are generally a higher lvl than your opponents plus you don't have to worry about gear (the reason I think that a lot of my legion very rarely go to the abyss or through rifts - they're all above 40 now .. )
also @ Kuraphimaru thanks for the info- I didn't really get it before but it seems you have a valid point - i'm not sure how NCsoft could fix it other than to remove the medals and i'm not sure they should do that, I think they're a good idea.

Totally agree. I'd bet that 80% of the folks that leave Aion are those that only care about two things...leveling fast and loot. Aion is better off without imo :-)

In aion im a lvl 40 SM, in forts, if your smart, it is actually the easiest one to gain medals. From my experience and my guildies experience, you can usually get medals for only 40-60 ap points depending on how many peps showed. It may be cheap but the only real way for sm's 2 get points in forts is 2 aoe the hell out themselves for 1-5 ap points a kill and around 20 kills each time with everyone attacking each other. I got 194 kills and 500ish ap doing this in a fort battle and i could almost garentee you if our attack had succeeded, I would have been in the top ten people there, do to the fact that most people only get 1-5 ap per kill anyways because of all the other people attacking the same people you are and taking the actual amount of points you would have gotten and killing it even if you did the vast majority of the killing, making it much more efficent and should i say easier for sm's. The hardest thing for me is the actual gaining of the ap not the medals, so please try the aoe thing in forts if you're an sm and please tell me how it works
PS I felt like i was completely rambolling there, so if it doesnt make sense to you it prolly doesnt make sense to me either
