I want to be surprised, some developer out there is going to bring us a MMORPG using Ageia Phys X,destruction physics all in a gorgeous world and a game full of content with UNIQUE ideas.
No i do not think the recession is a good thing at all, this is not the 70's ,a GOOD game cost several millions to make, there is no more magic to create a great game with a limited budget. The reason?it would take too long dfor a small time indie developer,so the game gets rushed for lack of content and the game looks like something 20 years old,it just does not work.
My gut tells me it is going to be the exact same guy who started it all>>>SMED and SOE.I do not think it will be their next EQ installment, but eventually it will be SOE that always is the leader, the inventor.
I would take zero interest in anything Blizzard does for a very long time, they are still trying to pawn off old over head view games that looks like 1990's console efforts, they obviously have a lack of talent and skill in that organization.I bet if Blizzard made a WOW 2 it would improve nothing technically, just the same old wit ha different skin.
I think Square Enix is moving forward in leaps and bounds, but their gaming hemisphere is no where near bringing us Agiea Phys x or destructive animations,so yep i will stick with SOE to bring us the NEXT big MMORPG.There is also hints at something using realistic 3D technology via Nvidia tech,so it is all lurking out there somewhere, only a matter of maybe 5 more years.
To the OP,i also am looking forward to Schilling's game, however i am leery because they have such a talented staff going,it is going to carry an enormous budget. As the budget gets higher and higher, they will eventually stop creating content and maybe even remove some, just to get the game out to make money. The guy in charge of Schilling's finances is also one of the guys in charge of this game,so my gut tells me it's about profit instead of game built on passion.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Any browncoats out there? Isn't there still a MMO in development based on the Firefly universe?
Now THAT would be awesome (if done right). I think the right game could make a killing given the market today. We are all waiting for something innovative and new. It will be interesting to see what Blizzard and Turbine have up their sleeves.
QFT... I mean they brought back Family Guy from the dead... I wish they'd do the same with Firefly.
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
On a personal note, I'm looking forward to Blizzards secret weapon for many reasons.
Biggest is I think it'll be the "anti-WoW". What better way to corner the MMO market than to have the majority of "casual-themepark" players with WoW... and bring out a game that's totally opposite "hardcore-sandbox"-esque with the polish that WoW carries? Wishful thinking? Maybe, but it makes sense that Blizzard would make another MMO that wouldn't steal away from their own monster player base already devoted to WoW.
I guess we'll see. *shrugs* No hype is good hype.

Copernicus is actually announced, they are just being tight-lip about it. Still, it is the top on my list.
I am also interested in what Bethesda is working on, and Bioware is making an unannounced game also, rumors say it is another MMO, possibly in the same IP as Dragon age.
I don't really get excited about games that are not announced yet, but I am at least curious about these ones.

I wouldn't really call it announced, all we have is a codename and a very generic description.

It will be interesting but Morhaime have already said it is not set in the world of Wow but still rather similar so don't expect them to make it a sandbox or something completely different. Blizzard prefers playing safe and wouldn't bet the huge sum their game will cost on a chance like that.
I wonder if they can get the current Wow players to change to the new, or if they will stay on wow forever or who else will pick up the banner instead.

I'm hoping for the same thing. It would make zero sense for Blizzard to create a game to compete with their money maker. I think they will come out with something designed to bring in everyone who doesnt play WoW, but only time will tell.

Respectfully I disagree to some extent regarding risk.
When I first heard of a video game called "Diablo", I thought "WOW... using the spanish word for DEVIL... ooooooh how original... and it required WINDOWS 95 to run because of something called Direct X? This game is going to flop." Long story short, after seeing it in action, I upgraded my 486dx66, bought Win 95 and bought Diablo and played the hell out of it (and the Mechwarrior 2 series at the time, but i digress)
When I heard Blizzard was going to make a MMO based off of Warcraft, I thought "WOW... they're going to make a MMORPG?!?! AND... they expect it to compete with EVERQUEST 2... the child of the great father of them all, EQ?!?! The graphics are blocky, cartoonish... this is a step backwards. There is no way this game will fly past the first month." Long story short I played EQ2 for a few weeks, uninstalled before the first month was up, broke each disc (which was a lot of breaking) took it out back, pissed on it and doused it with lighter fluid then set it on fire. A few months later a friend told me I should give WoW a try, I did, and played the hell out of it.
Though this is just my personal experience with their IP's... I guess my point is the few things they did come out with could be considered HUGE gambles... but in the end... Diablo set the bar for roguelike games, and WoW set the current bar for MMO's. RTS-wise... they did good too I guess but I'm not well versed in those to give a fair educated opinion to say either way. They have always taken their time (sometimes too much) in doing what they set out to do and doing a decent job with their products. I guess that's why I have high hopes.

This gets me giddy...until I think about the million of ways this game could be bad...*sigh*
MMORTSRPG to allow players to control squads of units, player controlling the leader of the squad and their squad mates die permanently and have to be rebought/refitted with wargear but still have traditional RPG elements but making PvP the core of the game.
So many crazyness that would need to be figured out with this one as with all the fluff nuts and amount of written material around it. Not only that, the number of races involved (and would not be complete without most of them).
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

Agree. I've always loved the 40k universe. Something about space orcs makes me feel tingly inside.
In general I think game industry took a wrong turn somewhere and started birthing all those overproduced bloated behemots. Fat on graphics and animation but poor on actual gameplay (perhaps due to that bloated graphic engine limitations) Industry should go back to simplicity , smaller teams with more focus on gameplay.
Developers do seem to have been favouring flash at the expense of substance.
But they're not mutually exclusive and we shouldn't necessarily feel like we have to settle for one or the other.
There are two mmos coming out next year which I'm reasonably confident will deliver both - and I'm as cynical as they come.
I feel the same way and could easily go back to Daoc if there were enough of my friends on the same boat.
Anyway, back to the topic, i'm excited about Blizzard's new MMO, hopefully that will stop the whole WoW-copying going around and give a fresh breath to MMOs.
