If you have a great deal of time to invest in a game you can play Eve online for free through Plex.
I paid for my first month then my first month on my alt got me 30 days free with my main.
With two character It was easy to make the 600 million isk i needed monthly to keep both accounts running for free.
I'll admit this takes a major time investment.
Total I spent 35 bucks to start accounts and played for free for about eight months before my play schedule could no longer keep up with the time require to farm the required isk.
RuneScape is a skill-based game, there are no classes. You can try everything on your main account, no need to roll alts.Want to be a melee warrior ? Wield your sword or whip and go ahead. Want to play an archer ? Grab your bow and go.
the game has a big opened world, no zones, no instances. You can go everywhere, there is no limitation for player level, though there might be limitation for some skill levels. The game is absolutely non-linear nor theme-park....you can choose your own path, if you dont like combat you still can be a very rich and well appreciated player in the game.
There is a player-run economy, the NPC vendors only sell low level stuffs...all of the valuable things can be bought from other players, or you have to craft them yourself.
There is one so called sandbox feature what RuneScape is lacking, you cant change the game world. Apart of that RuneScape is a sandbox or lets say sandboxy game...you have so many options what to do,not only to fight.
If u have any further questions let me know 'll try to answer
Ok let me go into details then RuneScape is a skill-based game, there are no classes. You can try everything on your main account, no need to roll alts.Want to be a melee warrior ? Wield your sword or whip and go ahead. Want to play an archer ? Grab your bow and go. Not a feature in a sandbox game. Simply a classless game. It has been associated with sandbox games, but ultimately, there have been classless games that aren't sandboxes in any way. the game has a big opened world, no zones, no instances. You can go everywhere, there is no limitation for player level, though there might be limitation for some skill levels. The game is absolutely non-linear nor theme-park....you can choose your own path, if you dont like combat you still can be a very rich and well appreciated player in the game. Congrats. That's just freedom. What do you do with that freedom? Grind. =P Not to mention, the freedom thing just melds with the classless thing and pretty much 90% of MMOs in existence allows you to go where you want, when you want, as long as you can face the crushing fact that the monsters will kick your ass. There is a player-run economy, the NPC vendors only sell low level stuffs...all of the valuable things can be bought from other players, or you have to craft them yourself. This is one feature of a sandbox game, I will admit that. There is one so called sandbox feature what RuneScape is lacking, you cant change the game world. Apart of that RuneScape is a sandbox or lets say sandboxy game...you have so many options what to do,not only to fight. And this is the most important one. RS features 2 main features, fight and craft. You can adventure, but it doesn't reward well from what I remember. If u have any further questions let me know 'll try to answer
Well, tecnically Second Life and Entropia Universe are "free to pay", though using RCE system (Real Cash Economy, you can deposit AND withdraw money that is the in-game currency), so if you wanted to play it 100% for free you would have to invest A LOT of time on the free activities to generate income to fund your non-free activities, until you get to become efficient enough to do that without spending more than earning (which is like the dream of most players).

I have to argue with that, it is a feature of a sandbox game, since it cannot be sandbox if there are classes...it can be a feature of a themepark game too, but it is essential for a sandbox one.

Well here you criticise the gameplay, I didnt say its not grindy, I said its sandbox There is one so called sandbox feature what RuneScape is lacking, you cant change the game world. RuneScape features much much more than only fighting and crafting, you probably played the game very long time ago. You can gain wealth by being a miner, or a runecrafter, a hunter, you can build your house with your own dungeon in it where you can invite your friends to fight your own dragon I myself became a millionaire by being a fisher, my favourite skill I'm not trying to convince you that RS is a fun game, but its definitely way more sandboxy than most of the games out there. If you know any other game with so much features please let me know...I have been desperately searching for one for so long.

I don't know for sure, but Mortal looks to be being that way except much more "hardcore" and PvP based. It definitely gives me an RS vibe.
With that said, it's also not child friendly in any way and probably won't be "ready" for another 6 months.
I'm definitely not a child, lol, so that wont keep me back...but unfortunatly i cant stand first person view, it makes me seasick. Not to mention that PVP is not my thing at all. I'm looking forward to FFXIV...lets hope for the best.
