I'm thinking of picking this game up but I don't want to buy it, install it, and be running around in an empty game. So my question is: Is this game still booming with players or is it an empty shell of what it once was?
P.S. Plz respond I would really like to know.

I want to pose a question to you. Why would you think of picking up a 4+ yr old game over a brand new super phat one (world of warcraft). Just curious, this game is good but, only for the people that have been playing for years and years, there is no way to catch up, you will never have anything that is to be eww and awww'd over. I for one don't wanna play catch up, not only that if you don't pick a class that is needed to a high end (elitest) guild then you won't get in. This game is bias'd and will cause you to sell yourself out if you don't like the premere classes. Be a pioneer! Join World of Warcraft!!! It's new, it's awesome - just like everquest >>>WAS<<< when it first came out...
Just wanna save you much heart/head ache...
Mojojojo 49 Orc Hunter , Gorefiend Server, Warchief of Strength and Honor - (Hunters on WoW could school the crap outta a sorry ranger from EQ).
I want to pose a question to you, Mentat, something that has been bothering me for some time, on this forum (mmorpg.com not the everquest forum).
Why, if you are not playing the game, supporting the game or pro the game, are in the forum for the game?
Not just you, but others like yourself, come to a forum dedicated to a particular game and talk poorly about it and/or promote some other game.
Why?
I enjoy EQ. I have played since the release of Kunark. I have tried WoW. I was lucky enough to get into beta phase 3. I still play EQ. I don't play WoW. You see, different strokes for different folks. I have tried many games, many stand-alones and many mmorpgs. I always end up playing EQ. I've yet to find a reason to leave it.
The question of player population; well, yes, it's falling. But it's not gone, the game is far from dead. In fact, I'm now getting groups in Zones I never played in before (pre-GoD). You may never get the latest and leetest items, without being in an uber guild, but you can still play the game, you can still have fun.
Classes required by l337 guilds?! Well, I'm in one of those guilds. Only once have we ever limited reqruitment to certain classes. There is a nitch, a need for every class in EQ, at the high end. If you don't think so, you were never there or didn't play your class well.
To be positive for a moment, however, I would recommend, if you haven't decided and your choice is EQ or EQ2, get the "station pass". You don't have to keep it, but get it long enough to be able to log into both games, check'em out for yourself and make up your own mind!

My dog barks some. Mentally you picture my dog, but I have not told you the type of dog which I have. Perhaps you even picture Toto, from "The Wizard of Oz." But I warn you, my dog is always with me.
He uses what most of us use in this website:
I would recommend also, I played since EQ 1 Beta. Like 5 1/2 years. Was the best, had the best, was in one of the most uberest guild EQ1 had. There will be no other game like it for awhile. Everything out now is a EQ1 mock up/spin. But, the most fun I had playing EQ1 was a small 4 to 6 player group whacking stuff and bullsh*ting in chat!! Isn't that what all these games are? High res chat rooms? To each there own. I did it all in EQ1. It rocked, Twice!!
My biggest wish is that they starts some brand new servers. So I could try it all over again!!!

Blahahahah
They ahve a good amount. I am in a good guild that has only mature players and we have an average of 15 people that are online that are level 60+. They are great help and you can find 300 people+ in bazaar and about 100 in POK. THis is on Morden Rasp(One of the new servers). I restarted 2 weeks ago and play a 35 monk. Id definately recommend giving it a try.
I havn't played EQ since 2001 when the lvl cap was still 60. I was in a guild called Pandemonium on the Tallen Zek server. I have recently been interested in playing again and starting fresh but would also like to know if there are many people still playing this game. So far this is the only site I've found that has updated discussions about EQ that doesn't date back to around 2003 or earlier. When I played I had sooo much lag that I always got pked well a few years later I finally have a bada** computer and I want to do some damage. Are the montly charges still around 12 bucks?
Is EQ dead or dying? IMO I'd have to say no. Of course, the total number of players per server has dropped some since the release of games like WoW and EQ2, but there is STILL quite large amount of people playing. I don't really find it all that hard to either join or form up a group when I log on. I've been playing since almost the release of the game, on and off. I currently have a level 61 monk and 22 cleric on the Bristlebane server, one of the oldest servers around. The guild I am in currently has somewhere around 160 people or so, with an average online at any given time of around 13-15; sometimes more, sometimes less. EQ is STILL the greatest MMO experience that I have ever had. The GUI is pretty customizable to your own particular needs. The commands are quick and easy to learn. The community is one of the best that I have found in ANY MMO and I've played quite a few during the life of the MMO genre of games, back since EQ first came out. The game world is one of the largest that exists, especially since you can buy the Platinum pack now (I think that's what it is) that comes with most of the current expansions for a pretty cheap price. The game isn't much to play per month, and there is a ton of content to explore. Also, I like the challenge of levelling in EQ. Its not a cake walk to go from bottom to top. It takes work. It takes a bit of dedication. But its a LOT of fun on the way up. There are still a few elite *uber* guilds around, but most are open to just about any and all new people, and they are very helpful. My suggestion: Get EQ. You'll enjoy it, and you get a TON of experiences for your moneys worth.
Monk of Norath, Bristlebane server
I play on one of the older servers, Cazic Thule and the population is still good there. Its not anywhere what it was 6 months ago, but there are still plenty of people in it. Finding a group can get abit harder then it used to be, but I think the game is far from an empty shell. If you want a booming bustling game, atleast on my server, EQ 1 isnt it anymore, if you don't mind the place not full with people you should be content with how it is now.

UO is still going, and isn't Meridian 59 still going as well?? Or did they finally turn that one off?
EQ has a long long life yet

I also think that Everquest is not dying at all. Imo it will now even begin to live up. Why? I experienced this situation more than one time, i play a game the another one gets out i play it for a few days/weeks/months and then i find out that it sucks and i come back to good old eq. Many people went to EQ2 or WoW and will give it a bit time to evolve and if nothing happens theyll come back again. And this "phenomenom" will happen a bit faster this time because of the new expasion....."Dragons of Norrath" i think.
BTW
Does anyone know if there is a way to check how many people play on EQ servers exactly, like in Daoc for example.
No, sony stopped sharing their server counts several years ago. You only get the color coding for servers now to identify their population.

im not going back no matter how bored i am. I dont have time for the end game nor do i need another job, excpet i pay for it and recieve nothing in return. I wish EQ would have stayed at velious and just expanded the current zones rather than emptying them by adding so many new ones. remember when the commons was filled with people trading? that was fun. GOOD old LOIO full of ignorant noobs and confrontations among players. Ahh, oasis, death was always imminent with the specs and sand giants and than you also had the nercos with spec form freaking you out as they pass through. Plane of fear and hate being the popular ones with the wizard the only entre to PoH. By the time i got my wizzie high enough to port to PoH everyone moved onto the expansion and i never got the opportunity to see it. Plane of mischief is messed up in that it was odd looking. My favorite thing was killing the guards in the cities...you really felt jyour character advanced after mauling lvl 40-50 guards. good times...dgood times...Since my wizzie was not in high demand for groups at the time i had little choices to grind xp so instead i got drunk whenever i got on in Thurg...someone go there thats still playing EQ and have one on me! It wasnt a complete waste of time though because i did get fletching up to 128 while intoxicated. Still think they should have added a way to go beyond the intoxication and start losing health than death. those were the good old days...

luchlin was not a good expansion...the zones they added did not offer much more. I did like the graphics upgrade though! As for the traveling, it killed my wizard, use to be albe to make money teleporting people all over the world then planes of power and it was all gone.... Yeah its nice to have no content to the game but when you have so much content that it is causing the original to be obsolete theres a problem. Same thing will happen to EQ2, they are going to add 2 expansions a year. I guess time will only tell.

Hmm, i dont share that opinion.....i think that through the possiblity to be independent of travelling you can go where you want whenever youw want, you dont have to ask some druids or wizzies, now you have access to nearly all zones from PoK. This connects. Now i can easily go from Dungeon A to my friends in Dungeon B without the problem of not having someone who can port in my zone......i really liked the luclin expansion....
