Here is a youtube video from April of 2008 hyping up Mortal Online. This is the video that I know I saw a couple years back as well, and when I saw it, I thought to myself "yeh yeh, I'll believe THAT when I see it".
Take a look to refresh your memory or if you've never seen it: www.youtube.com/watch
Well now we are supposedly almost to the official launch date, and six months past the date that first video from early 2008 advertised as a launch date.
Now we have many, many videos of the reality of what MO actually is. I have posted several of the game play videos on youtube now, and I must say that it doesn't look nearly as impressive as that first video.
Just a few notes:
- While the sky in today's MO is pretty nice, it certainly doesn't look nearly as cool and no lightning ever flashes in the distance. That looked soooo awesome in that hype video from 2008.
- It is actually raining in that hype video as well. I know I've heard that MO is planning on implementing dynamic weather sometime after launch, now the reality says that there are many much more important things that need fixed before even dreaming of adding rain, much less "dynamic weather" to the world.
- What the hell is that cool looking massive mount that he is riding in that hype video and where are those things now?
- The lighting from the torch in the hype video certainly looks amazing. The shadows in MO are pretty detailed right now, but I know I haven't yet seen lighting or shadows like THAT in the real MO now.
- Character models in the hype video are way more impressive then what he have right now. I doubt they will change much from what we see today
- Um, what city is that in the hype video? I haven't been to all the towns yet in beta, but I have no clue where that hype video is taken.
- Cracks in the ground with some kind of lava or molten core heat creeping up between the cracks? Where is that in this MO world now? I wanna check that out! (Yes I know, it's not there "yet")
Look, I know that all initial hype videos are made to do just that. But making a video like that looks like a true fantasy now (or a load of BS, depending on how you look at it all). All I'm asking is for the bugs to be ironed out, magic to be completed, and mobs with some kind of actual AI to be implemented. Get all that, and I'd be happy as hell.
Just an observation.

The game is very bare with no content, the only thing in it right now is a basic crafting system, player houses, pvp combat and no pve.
I thought you defended Mortal Online's current version.
Read the last three words of my post again. "Just an observation". Nothing more.

All the people here told you that the game was bare with no content yet you defended it and attacked others for their criticisms, but now you are criticizing yourself? Glad your finally getting out of the hype phase and seeing the reality. Most of that content wont be in for another 6 months to a year.
Thats why many people got a refund because the powerpoint presentation and those videos released before the game went into closed beta are not going to be in for a long time.
Why does it have to be either attack MO or defend it with rose colored glasses?
Why can't it be play it as I have done so far, and will continue to do, simply because I am having FUN with it - and because I like the direction SV is taking with this game?
It obviously has many bugs. Not once have I ever said it didn't have problems or need a lot of work. I have said I have bought it and am having fun. That's it.
Why does one have to be either a angry hater or a blind foaming fan?
Can't I state my claim as somewhere between those two points that supports SV and wishes them success?

Look, if you want to be a part of these forums, you will have to choose a side and start ranting. You will have to go to great lengths to promote/destroy the game of your choice, and quickly shut down any of those who oppose you.
Sorry, the rules are what they are.
Well there's supposed to be a open stress test event this week so alot of us like myself who are curious and haven't actually had a chance to see the game ourselves will have the chance (then all hell will REALLY break loose in the forums with the pro/con rants!)!
it would be fine if they wouldn't have tried to sell that off as in-game content. Like it's really pathetic after years of development and using a pre-made engine they have nothing to show it's such a bad scam glad I didn't pre-order it and will continue to play DF, been playing DF since launch and it's really changing a lot each expansion it's really good now.
I will as most here will consider you trolling for DF. The fact is, Darkfall was in the same boat before launch last year, in fact darkfall was pretty much vaporware until the final few months before it released. I know I followed it for years. I never did end up buying it due to the hate spewed out after it launched about how buggy it was and hackers took a foothold there after to ruin it even more. Everyone called them scam artists as well, but look where DF sits now. In recovery, people enjoying the game, and all is well.
MO made the mistake of showing what they wanted to have as a finished product, and offering people to buy in to the alpha test. But in the long run, they needed the funds to keep the project afloat. From everything I see on youtube and read from here and the official MO boards I can see people anxiously awaiting the launch with hopes of it failing so that DF can remain unscathed.
People fear that MO may take some subs from DF, well it will and it has. Its sad that for the past 3 or so years the people here destroy games with propaganda. They don't even give the company a chance to take a chance and make a change. This is why the current line up of MMOs are suffering from "clones disease". Back in the beginning when MMOs first started to break into mainstream there was tons of potential for niche games and games that was considered "different" games like Shadowbane and UO. Back then people foamed at the mouth for something new and innovated. Today kids cry because they don't like what they see and try to spread the hate to others. Well if you don't like what you see then why not just move on to something you do. Go back to DF and play that until you can give a honest constructive truthful opinion about a game you actually have played.
I have yet to decide which game I will end up in but soon I will be making a choice. So far I am leaning towards MO due to the epic nature of things. I just don't see DF offering that kind of epic feeling. To each his own, but damn stop the hate. I mean really its not the cool thing to do anymore.
Darkfall in its beta was MUCH more complete and ready for launch than MO. i am/was in both. and i wish MO well for the future, and bought it to support them. but been very unpleasantly surprised with MO's beta, while i was very pleasantly surprised with Darkfall's beta.

I have to laugh at this -- "epic nature of things" in MO... LOL. I mean, seriously. What's better about MO other than the graphics? Combat is atrocious. There's no seiging. The AI is non existent. Most of the game is buggy.
That said, I don't play, and won't play DF. It's not a competition -- and people are unhappy with MO because Star Vault used people's money as open ended loans in order to finance a game they have little capability to turn out. On a long enough timeline, sure -- they can make the game. But you have most of the team under 30, none of them having launched a piece of software in their lives, the entire company funded by the CEO's dad and there's a competition to DF? No, there isn't. While DF is horrible to play and I didn't enjoy the combat in it, it's light years ahead of what MO is offering in EVERY aspect. It's not a competition though like I said, and MO will flal flat without DF even being around. That's because the company has used underhanded tactics to fund the game, making customers 'quasi investors', and launching a title they have no ability to develop properly. It will suffer a similar fate as Dark and Light, though I'd venture to say DnL probably will do better in the view of history.
Umm.. actually MO told everyone in July that they were going to be entering a BETA test for a game that was going to ship in September. Instead, you are right, people bought the game and logged into what most folks would call an Alpha test.
They were charged over 6 months ago.. but to date have not gotten a product. THAT is what is different between MO and the other game you mentioned.. or at least the difference in the companies.
On Tues/Weds they will have the open stress test for MO. I urge you to download the game and look with your own eyes. Don't take my word or anyone else's word.. take this opportunity to see for yourself and then decide if you want to send them money.
Good Luck

zaxtor: I'm wondering why are you sharing your doubts here ?
It's know for long time, that weather effects will prolly be implemented:
a ) during upgrade to newest versions of grome & speedtree
b ) along with 1st content patch
There aren't even implemented all races, so - damn, forgot the name of this snow_rhinoceric_mount - expect races individual content in future.
But if everyone will say: I'll wait for half a year, and then MO may become playable, then there's a chance there won't be MO anymore.

That video released in 2008 is not gameplay.But..it's nice to see I guess. Until I see real gameplay stuff, the game doesn't exist for me.
Most of the people are simple minded, they need to see black or white, the can't see different grey tones.
Yay! it's a pity.

At this point in time I seriously do not see anyone fearing the loss of subs to MO. No game should have that concern lol. MO isn't a game yet, currently it's a shell that hopes to one day have substance inside.
As far as your comments on DFO I have this to say, at least the DFO trailer was representative of the game. What was in the trailer you could actually do and was actually in game lol.
As far as MO goes... can you say the same at all?
I was originally looking forward to both MO and DFO myself. The beta for both changed that though. I continued to look forward to DFO and began to care less about MO. MO just isn't in a state remotely close to launch ready. It doesn't have content to launch, sure you can pull the sandbox card if you wish but I'm from UO and I know what a sandbox is and that content were our tools to create our own adventure. When there is nothing to do but PvP and craft you do not have a sandbox lol.
While in the end I did not stick with DFO I give it credit where credit is due. If you want epic PvP battles then it is certainly the place to go currently, MO will not compete with it there. MO's goal should be to compete with DFO on the sandbox front. Give the community a ton of tools to basically create there own adventures and have PvP as a side focus. Right now all you can do in MO is craft or PvP and the PvP is no where near on par with DFO's.
Choose what you will, just don't try to justify the state of MO with false information in regards to DFO. DFO had a great deal more in game at this stage than MO does. Not only that but it was a great deal more polished than MO is. Those are just facts and nothing you or I or anyone can change that lol.
No people, please you need to understand what this strees test is all about. What does a STRESS TEST (and i cant stress that enough ) mean? It means they want as many people as possible to try and get into the server and crash it! So that they can see what the problem is and correct it. Sure some may even get in the game and play it, but i doubt it.
For those of you wanting to have some free game time, you've been warned.

I understand what a stress-test is. The question really is... do the MO developers? This is the first opportunity for people to see MO without paying $50. It's less than 2 weeks from release. WHY would the developers have an OPEN stress test without blowing the servers internally first? Aren't there at LEAST 5-10K (or I even heard 13,000 mentioned) people that have bought this game already? If they can't get enough people that have paid money for the game to login for an hour to stress the servers... it's really gotta tell you something.
Instead the developers themselves want this Stress Test to be the first thing the non-paying public sees of Mortal Online. Who am I to argue?

Yep. They stated on the forums that with the stress test they want to overblow the servers, so that they can optimize them better for the open beta...
I remain optimistic that MO keeps being developed, and maybe draws enough interest to warrant more funding, or entice level headed talent to their project.
Any developer that works to build an MMO with concepts like they talk about for MO, or DFO gets my moral support.
If only the talent and funding of a developer like Blizzard would back such a title. *drools
Nothing excites jaded Grandmasters more than a theoretical novelty
My guess is they took the few models they had rendered it nicely worked it over and then put out a nice video, which is not gameplay.
MO graphics might be better don't know if they are set on medium or whatever, but I doubt I want it better for want of performance anyway.
A weather systerm should not be so difficult to be implement, so I guess they could manage that if they wanted to. For the lightning in the sky I doubt they will implement that. looks cool in a video, but is pretty uselss in an MMO where weather has no effect. (yet?)
For the model and mobs, they still are in their most critical phase of trying to get mobs and mob Ai out without crashing the server. So I guess a graphic designer geeked out over the years and maybe even designed those models.
Getting server performance under control with working pve would be enough for me to be happy at the moment. From that basis on you can easily enhance the game.
You never know lol Garriott said he wanted to get back in the biz and do another Fantasy MMO, he also gave credit to Blizzard with what they did with WoW. So maybe UO2 backed by Blizzard can be seen in the future some day XD. I don't know if I'd jump for joy or cry though. Could be a very bad thing but could be a good thing lol.

Obviously theh devs know what a stress test is or they wouldnt have said what their goal is. If people think this is their opportunity to get into mortal online and play around with it so they can decide if they wan to buy it or not, they are going to be sadly mistaken. Most of those people will be on here pissing and moaning about how the server was crashing they couldnt log in or some crap like that all because they couldnt read. STRESS TEST, not gameplay test.
