Without a doubt you should go back and enjoy FFXI while FFXIV is making its way out this year. I too thought id toss my FFXI sub to the side since FFXIV was launched, but if i still enjoy playing it why unsubscribe? Regardless of how close FFXIV will get to coming out, many old veterans and seasoned players will move to FFXIV and a large amount will stay on FFXI and play both. Just like most mmos a lot of content takes time and patience because no mmo came out perfect at launch, not even FFXI. While content was there and the only thing FFXI lacked was a solo/casual playstyle for events/leveling. It took FFXI years to truly shine but still to me the best PVE experience and if the the best mmo ive played.
What im saying is FFXIV wont be perfect at launch, or at least a pet class player like me wont get loving for probably the first year. Seeing as how SE doesnt plan on releasing pet classes at launch, many players will get stuck with the core ones. FFXI wont die and FFXI wont close when FFXIV comes out, SE has confirmed this up and down saying "as long as this game brings revenue it will stay open and recieve updates" (not as large and amazing updates as FFXIV but the game has years of content already). One final thing to consider: FFXIV and FFXI will be VERY different games. What if you dont like FFXIV armory and job system? What if you dont like thier progression system? Some players will still enjoy FFXI more of its difficulty and rewarding experience. Since FFXIV is said to be geared towards a Casual audience, this will be a major turnoff it thats all it will be.
When FFXIV comes out and you havent played FFXI the whole time while waiting, you will regret not getting stuff done and enjoying FFXI when you find that FFXIV may have not been the game you wanted it to be. SE has some stiff competition in order to rival thier OWN GAME, its going to take a lot more that a amazing graphic/combat/armoury system overhaul to keep us entertained.
I was thinking of returning to XI simply because I want to play XIV so badly but I am going to wait, my highest level was a 36 THF and I stopped being able to find groups. Somehow I know it hasn't changed much since then - no reason to put time into XI if I end up sticking with XIV
As a 75 thief, I always made my own parties and slowly but surely I made it up there. With the level sync system and various improvements to solo exp and the fields of valor system theres plenty a way to get those levels.

I too made my own parties(a level 10 piece of armor here and there plus more useful classes didn't get me top spot very often) but eventually fell behind the bubble of players due to 1-2 day breaks from the game. I would be taken to some far out place where the camp is set up on some staircase, level up some and then log in a day later to see the place deserted with no where to go. I didn't have a LS that was willing to group up at lower levels so I lost the will to grind, even though it was definitely fun when I did find a good group
Anyway my point is I do plan on playing the crap out of XIV due to my experiences in XI but no reason to play XI if I am just going to stop when XIV comes out
lol i left ffxi back in 07 and im not going to go back (i have nightmares of applying refresh cycles on hours on end)
I think the only way i go back to FFXI,if there is no other good release and so far i am skeptical and they turned FFXI into a F2P game.Even then i would be hard pressed because a F2P game is a free ticket to RMT corruption, the game would be worse tha never, you would probably see Leaping boots selling for 50 million,Utsusemi Ni scrolls for 50 million ect ect.Every camp would be over run with RMT ,including any boss that drops non rare/ex.Worst of all with rampant fish botting returning the entire economy would make it impossible to make any gil to survive on.
What would you do sell stacks of sushi for 1k profit? lol stack of meatkabobs for 500 gil profit? Then you need to buy one stack of arrows and it costs you 100k lol.
I would prefer to see FFXI relaunch ,wipe the servers or make a couple new ones and make sure no cheating of any kind and no player transfers.Make it F2P but ban IP's not accounts, that way they can't keep coming back.Make sure Windower is banned and not able to get back in order after a week.I always liked FFXI,i have no problems at all going back and playing from scratch on a level 1 player and with a community i know is playing fair and for fun.

Yes, I have, and I'm having a pretty good time with it too. Just about to the end of my first month and I'm definitely paying for another month. I quit in 05 and then briefly returned in 07, the game has changed quite a bit but it still captures me and is somehow just different then all the other mmo's I've played; I really can't say why exactly but FFXI still gots it!
The "ultimate collection" deal is what really made up my mind for me, makes it affordable, rather then paying for all the individual expansions. The game has fundamentally changed over the years, and due to lower populations, it plays quite a bit differently then I remember. It's a more solo experience for me now, and due to the major changes in the way exp is calculated solo is actually possible, probably for just about any job as well. Level sync is very nice, without it I imagine the game would have really died by now, but it's also exploitable... The biggest problem I have right now is doing rank missions... not so many people doing low lvl stuff and without the support of a LS, a fairly simple fight becomes a huge obstacle, not because it's so hard, but because it's difficult to find anyone else that's doing it, or anyone willing to help.
So for now I'm having a good time doing what I can and hoping I get some help on the things I can't do myself, but I know there is a wall coming, at some point I'm not going to be able to keep progressing without real help and that will probably be the end of it for me. Which makes me really wonder what the fate of XI will be the day XIV releases... built into XI are plenty of group required progress barriers and I have to think that XIV is going to drop XI's pop by half overnight, for anyone that for some reason wants to start fresh with XI at that point is probably not getting very far and without any new players XI will die off pretty quick I'd think...
my heart say yes but my mind says no, was a great experience but a tough one... worried i'll go back and it will spoil what i remembered it to be. the more i wait for ffxiv the more tempted i get though,
No, but I will admit I am tempted to.
I have decided to return, but I'm waiting for the next billing period to start Feb 1st, and hopefully with several members of my LS. We'll be discussing it in more depth on our forums over the next 2 weeks, and if anyone else would like to join us, new player or vet...stop by our forums and sign up. <Click my signature> See ya there...
I've considered it numerous times, but the biggest thing holding me back is that in FFXI I feel almost like I'm begging all the time for help with the tougher (but required) quests like the Genkai / level cap quests and missions... I've gotten past most of the missions that I *need* I guess now but I remember sitting at 50 (or 60? I can't remember) on my warrior for a month or two before I quit last time because I couldn't get anyone to help me with the quest and I felt bad asking over and over again. If that's gonna happen every 5 levels until my first lv 75 there's no reason to go back. God I hope FFXIV doesn't do that...
Edit: Not to mention I have to find a new LS everytime I come back because for some reason my LS falls apart every time I leave I really do miss the game though...

I always loved final fantasy it was the only MMO that felt like a real world exisited within an MMO, if they fix the forced grouping i will play this game without a doubt.

Funny thing ... I was always a proponent of Genkai 5 a requirement to take any job past 70. For instance if you have WAR to 75 already and you want to get MNK to 75 you would have to win G5 with MNK as well or your MNK couldn't level past 70. I though needing to fight Maat (pronounced "Mate" btw) was a nice way to show that you can play your job well enough to go heads up against a difficult and equally skilled opponent. If you can't beat him you can't level and every job plays differently so know how to play any job you take to 75. Testimonies were not hard to get once you had a level 75 (the only difficult one to really get is THF b/c you need to steal it and SAM because they drop off NMs mostly).
They did get easier as you got closer to 75. It did suck when you had to sit there for days upon days trying to get some papyrus. The first one made sense because the core game only went up to 50 and the cap was increased to 75 when the Rise of Zilart came out. Maybe if there was one at 50 then 60 and then 70 it would be better. I mean every 5 levels might be too much, but what those missions did was it segregated to population so not everyone was flying from 50 to 75 at the exact same time. By needing to prove yourself every 5 levels people who aren't on 24/7 would have a chance to party with the people making the push because there was both luck (G1) and skill (G5) involved with getting past those levels. Honestly it was the right thing to do.
The game has a lot of cool new stuff in it. Campaign battles along with dancer as a sub job has made leveling solo easier. Some of the servers are alot slower than others. I just switched from Kujata to Phoenix. It's great to see 2000-2500 online each night compared to 600-700. Alot easier to get into parties.
Sorry for others saying they have trouble getting hard things done. It is harder for newbies to come into the game. I try really hard to listen to people shouting for help on things I did a long time ago. problem is I don't have much gametime to play, wife only allows so much a week. But if you come to Phoenix and see Dreamcatcher online, feel free to ask for my help.
Yeah I totally went back about 2 months ago actually. A lot has changed since I quit so long ago. Trying to work on getting samurai to 75 now I'm stuck at 53 right now. From what I understand with level sync I'll be able to pick back up at 55 no problem.
I have to say the game has changed drastically though. WIth 99% of the player base having 1 or multiple level 75 jobs most people spend their time doing events witht their end game shells. Fields of Valor is pretty cool though makes it so you can solo and not have it be a complete waste of time. It does get boring though I leveled from 51-53 just off that while looking for parties and having my flag up.
I don't recommend anyone starting a new account though if they can't jus start their old one back up. You won't get anywhere really unless you have 6 people you know in the same boat as you and you static with them. By the time you'd get to endgame FFXIV will be out anways.
Which I can't wait for!
I'm tempted to, but I got that thing on my shoulder telling me it's a waste of time if I'm guaranteed to swap over. My only regret is not seeing any of the crazy late-game content, and not about to race through prior to FFVI in order to taste it... even if the latter ends up not seeing that kind of goodness for years down the line.
