What MMO allows you to live as a crafter with VERY little combat?

I miss the days of UO, where I could log in to my blacksmith, craft some very useful armor and equipment, and never have to fight a damn thing.

Are there any MMOs like that? I've tried EVE, but couldn't get into it.

Please no one mention SWG.

Dude, there is an MMO like that out there: Ultima Online.

I spent the last year being a crafter on Defiance Freeshard, holding the largest store there. I never felt more like a crafter than in UO. I had to work several hours ingame after working lots of hours real time, lol.

Check out Defiance freeshard or Gamers. Stick to the best, don't try any bullshit games!

A Tale in the Desert is pretty much an all crafting, no combat game you might enjoy.

Fallen Earth. New MMO with mature players. You can craft to level, 95% of all ingame items are player made and crafting is really indepth. Theyre offering a two week trial, look into it. AMAZING game. Combat is good to if you decide to get into it, it's more FPS style than RPG.

FFXIV seems to be working on solid non-combat classes. They have stated that you'll still have to party, on occasion, to venture into difficult areas. That and equipment will need to be repaired, so you could possibly have a flourishing repair business.

I'll throw out Istaria (nee Horizons) as a game that has really robust crafting that doesn't seem to require you to fight anything. It's old, tiny population (though helpful and very friendly). Steep learning curve I found, though. They have a "free forever" option if you limit yourself to a human character instead of one of the other many races they offer.

I tried the game but the clunky controls turned me off. Plus the game has a very slow start and I couldn't get into it, same reason I couldn't get into EVE, which I know is a great game also.

Mm, shame you can't get into Eve... it is a very slow start though, i definitely agree with you there. Failing that, I don't really know of any games like that unfortunately.

@user that mentioned Aion - Aions crafting system... is interesting.. but entirely linear until like 400+ you don't actually have to go out and buy the materials.. they're all on a vendor, you just buy them and hit craft, until you hit about 400. If you like that thing I guess it's okay.

Try vanguard.. I didn't personally try it(the crafting not the game), but my roommate said it had an excellent crafting system.

    In his words:

Say you wanted to craft a sword, you'd have to get your ore, mine it or buy it, smelt the ore, which has it's own little mini game using different actions to complete the process.. you can take your time and aim for a high quality.... but if you don't finish in the allotted amount of time you won't get the item at all.  Then you forge the different parts of the weapon. Each item affects the overall quality of the item.  You can also do them in bundles.. but if you fail the bundle you fail all of them at one time.

     Mortal or Vanguard.

VG had a rocky launch, Mortal is soon to have one.

Both are way under their potential in the eyes of many.

    However, they're still games.

Vanguard is more refined, I'd say though.

    I'll second this suggestion.

I've only been playing a few days, but the crafting system is wonderful, and it's certainly possible to avoid combat and just craft.

FFXIV is worth keeping an eye on.

Alot of good suggestions listed here in this thread, but wanted to add another suggestion.

    Check out Ryzom.

free forever as human is race the only limitation besides having one slot?

I like Vanguard, it's a really good game and it's the only game in which I have been a serious crafter. The crafting system is great in my eyes.

The only problem with Vanguard (and the reason I stopped playing) is that it's future is a bit uncertain and I didn't want to invest a huge amount of time into something that might not last.

As you already mentioned your distaste for FE I would go with Vanguard who's crafting I actually prefer because its actually interactive.  I loved crafting in that game, although I felt the craft grind could sometimes get repetitive... but overall it has the best crafting I've seen.  You get tons of work orders too, so you don't have to go through very much to start crafting in that game.

I loved crafting in Runescape.  One of my fav things to do on any mmo was just chill and make stuff for my house.   Admittedly crafting will be harder at higher levels of crafting if you don't level up your character as well, but most crafting systems have at least one place to get mats that has 0 enemies.

I am playing Wurm online it's a very nice sand box crafting game, its more about crafting than fighting you can play for free to try it out skills cap at 20 on free server, there is paid and pvp prob has most robust crafting system i ever seen.

Atm i am running a farm raise cows and horses for meat, leather and animal parts and making leather armor sets you can do anything without doing much combat , you can even have a pet that you can tame its skill based game, paid there is non-pvp server and a paid pvp server.

You can grow crops, cut down and plant trees, mine, fish, hunt and more you can transfer you free character to a paid server at any time by paying for time and going to a portal stone and click on it.

Galaxies. You used to be able to be good at both crafting and combat, but now crafters are only good at crafting and you can die right outside your door! Hehe one of the best crafting systems though, and resource gathering is better than Ryzom, IMHO.

    ----
Games Tried: TCOS, 12sky, 12Sky2, Rappelz, LoA, GO, HO, GMU, Warrock, TR, PWI, SotNW:GE, PotC, EVE, MxO, PotBS, KO, HO, 9Dragons, LotRO, DDO, L2, Maplestory, Second Life, CoX, GW, EQ2, Ryzom, WoW, Planetside, SWG, FE, Aion, Allods, CO, etc

    Ryzom, definitely

the most exasperating, difficult, fun and confounding crafting system ever

on top of that the harvesting is a game in itself - made even more interesting by the danger involved in gathering the more advanced materials

Hello Kitty Online has hardly any combat :)

I cant remember when i read equally interesting thread. This one should be sticky.

Personally, i do not log in to do work ingame, so i dont understand you. But i respect players who are more into rpg and dont want to fight. More such players and we can one day have true RPG mmo.

I really hope for a game where some people will be legendary crafters, some politicians, merchants, thieves or do other normal jobs. The game where you can accomplish something without a single swing of your weapon. Thats possible only when Game Masters take the role of some npc occasionally........ Ok, end of offtop.

    Playing: Rohan
Played (from best to worst): Shadowbane, Guild Wars, Shayia, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Runes of Magic, Rappelz, Archlord, Knight online, King of Kings, Kal online, Last chaos

    EVE.

Dont really have to fire a gun ever if you only wanna do industry or economics. Dont even have to undock... buy stuff in one place, setup a courier contract and let courier players transport it where you wanna sell it for a profit and then sell the stuff for a profit... all without even leaving the station your in.

    Or daytrade.

Anything you can make money on in real life you can pretty much do it in EVE as well.

Only fun for the economists out there though.

You can check out the details on Istaria's different account options here:

    accounts.istaria.com/membershiptypes.php

You can't build your own plot/house if you play free (or even if you play the $10/month subscription option either), and you have fewer Consignment (i.e. Auction House) slots.

I never understood if you can upgrade a Free subscription to a full "Gifted" ($15/month) subscription though, and then go back to Free later on after adding new characters of different races.

Very little combat is not possible in most MMO's. Even the so called 'sandbox' ones.

Vanguard and Fallen Earth have great crafting. But they used nodes that you need to harvest/salvage. The higher lvl items you want to create the more dangerous areas the nodes will be in. For leather you need to skin mobs. So you will have to do combat for that

Star Wars Galaxies is one of the few MMO's that lets you chose a pure crafter class. They have combat abilities, but mainly rely on droids for that. This MMO doesnt use nodes that you need to hunt for mats, but lets you place harvesters. But to place them you sometimes have to clear mob lairs.
