Questions from a Newbie

feartheflamefeartheflame Member UncommonPosts: 8

Howdy,

I just purchased Everquest 2 and I was hoping for some points in the right direction concerning the following things.

1) Which EU server would you recommend a new player rolls on concerning the following points

i) finding players to group with if possible.

ii) finding an active server with players on.

iii)  what type of server is this, PvE/PvP/RP?

2) What class/es would you recommend a new player stays away from and why? (Not which you would recommend I play, but rather which you recommend I stay away from, I'm tempted to try a tank, a healer or a dps'er or caster, but wondering if any specific classes are terrible)

3) Any other tips, concerning groups, or instances, or areas to avoid. Or any other tips in general?

You are not your system specs.
You are not your uptime stats or your oversized screencap.
You are not your broadband connection.
You are not your postcount.

    1. Don't know about EU servers. Most EU players say that they'd rather play on US servers.

    2. Join a guild.

    3. The most active server is the RP server Antonia Bayle, but please don't play there. Other servers need people on them too, and it can cause problems with things like lag and the fact that there's always someone else getting the node before you do, or getting the boss before you do. Just pick a server and play. If you want groups, make liberal use of the LFG function and join a guild.

    4. Depends what you like to play. Fury is the best soloist for the Clerics, Monk one of the best soloists for Fighters. Personally, I much prefer soloing to grouping. Grouping in any game frankly sucks unless its for a specific mission. This game has so much to do that grouping actually limits you. When you group, you have to do what the group does, you can't explore, you can't craft, you can't harvest, etc.

    5. No areas to avoid except the PvP server. Mostly because its pretty much FFA PvP which most people find sucks big time.

    6. As for tips, don't limit yourself to group stuff, and actually take the time to explore as many aspects of the game you can. This is one of the most rich and vibrant games currently out there.

    Ok cool,

Thank you for the nice replies. The ironic thing about you saying that AB is one of the most popular servers is that I am an RP'er and would prefer to roll on an rp server. I will use the lfg system to the best of my abilities.

I hope the solo content in this game is good, I've not done much research into it, but I know lotro has some single player instances and stuff, I'm wondering what solo content everquest has.

this game is very good and you will find that there is more than adequate quest content for soloing. the only problem i found, and the reason i quit, is that i need group content and finding a group was very difficult as my guild was all level capped.

There are a lot of EU and Aussy players the servers. Starting new I would start on the AB roleplaying server cause there is a lot more people there helpful and will find more people of lower lvls to group with.

Well the EU severs are Splitpaw and Runnyeye both are PvE I think there is a thread here where someone recommends one of them but I can not remember what server (drop down menue to choose area).

As for classes look in the threads on this site below below lots of tips there as a general tips avoid tank classes as your first class, swashbuckler, brigand, or any kind of healer are a good first choice.

The RP community on AB is strong and is virtually the only reason to roll on AB nowadays, the server lag is there and as I always say AB is so big so you can safely be disregarded as a newbie, as there are so many of them. I am active in the RP on AB but be aware that all events and nearly all RP is on US time so be prepared to be up late nights, go to Town square on guildportal and look at the RP guilds listing there. There are almost no EU RP guilds of any size on AB I would check out the RP guilds on LdL too as that is probably a friendlier server at this moment (same site).

So I rolled on a US PvP server. Hopefully it will be enjoyable :)

There are some old Venekor RP guilds on Nagafen nowadays, those may be a good tip for you. The Naggy RP guilds are Firiona vies champions (good) and Shadow guard (evil), you may want to look for them.

While it is true that a lof of European players play on US serverts, Runnyeye and Splitpaw have very active communities.

I have a character on AB and I'm in a great guild there (the biggest in the whole game) and I have no shortage of players to interact with there.  The downside is that if you are looking toward the endgame and think you might like to raid, you might have difficulty finding other players during your play times.

Either way, welcome and I know you'll enjoy our great game and will find good people to play with along the way.

i posted a detailed class rundown on one of the other threads here a couple of days ago, i think it was in the endgame one.

Speaking as someone whose characters are mainly on AB: that place gets seriously laggy. With people coming back for the free play time in December, it sometimes took a minute or two between clicking a button and seeing the action. If you want RP, remember to try out Lucan de Lere server too. I'm in the US, but I also play the EU servers: you get the same number of character slots on both.

I've only tried the PvP servers twice, and got fed up very quickly. In theory there are rules to protect lower level players from being rolled by much higher players; there are also some big loopholes in those rules that blindsided me. There are no rules to stop lower levels from attacking higher, and that is not nearly as suicidal as it might sound. PvP servers are loaded with twinks whose enhanced spells/combat arts and gear allow them to roll newbie players (even two or three at once) with higher levels but poor-to-average gear. DO NOT EVER go outside a city with more coin than you need for a repair or two at a mender, or carrying valuable gear that you are not wearing or have attuned.

No it is safe to say that the newbie experience on the PvP servers is brutal, lots of people complain about that. But you may like it! I would roll a toon on a EU server and another place just to check things out though. Complaints about Crushbone has server lag starts to pop up too btw.
