First off I want to make a quick apology to the small community of this game and this forum for allowing myself to be sucked into an argument and participating in dirtying up the FE forums here. I swore that I would bite my tongue and not let trolls get the better of me, but it was late and I dropped my guard and lost my resolve. I won't apologize for that calling out I did however...
Better said than I could've said it.
My apologies to the FE community as well.

No kidding! I don't know how people can look at that and say the graphics "suck" - not your thing, maybe, but "suck"...? Makes me wonder if they're trying to run this on a system anywhere near what I am using; and my system isn't top of the line. It's about a year old, and I built it for gaming. I didn't like Aion's graphics - I felt like I was killing Pokemon over and over again in a way-too-feminine elf-world thing, but I wouldn't say they "suck" - I personally just didn't like them. I felt like Aion was designed to be appealing to 13 year old girls, mainly. My wife sure thought the character models were pretty but she got REAL bored playing it.
I certainly cannot see anything game breaking about the graphics in this game. They looked fine to me when I tried the trial.
That bit about AION really got me laughing though. When my g/f walked up to my PC to investigate this new game I was playing, she said "so now you're playing these mmos with 12 year olds", and she wasn't laughing. I don't know what it is with Asian mmos. They seem to have a very childish and immature style to them. Not saying AION is a bad game or anything, just an observation.

My dream MMO would be fairly close to a pure Sandbox game, and Fallen Earth is more of an open ended themepark game. My best comparison to another game would be that it's like Anarchy Online lite (complexity wise) but with more involved combat. That's certainly not a bad thing as Anarchy Online is my all time favorite MMO, and Fallen Earth is likely to be my MMO of choice until a new "pure" Sandbox MMO worth playing comes along.
Fallen Earth does a lot of things right. The writing is great. This is the first MMO with quest based advancement as an option where I actually enjoy reading the quest descriptions, and I frequently find myself just hanging out watching NPC conversations and activities that are just there to make the world feel alive. The game world in general is lovingly crafted. While the setting may not be for everyone, the amount of detail is staggering. You can run from (almost) anywhere, in any direction, and you'll find something worth exploring within minutes. That's an amazing feat considering the size of the world and budget limitations of an indie company. Triple A MMO developers should take lessons from the FE crew in how to make an open world setting without making it feel bland.
I'm also really impressed with the presentation. Graphics are amazingly good. Second only to AoC among MMOs I've played, and probably the best graphics of any MMO with a seam-less world. The downside to that is that the system requirements are also second to none. Running FE on the highest settings is more demanding than running AoC on highest settings, and on low settings realistic graphics tend to look worse than cartoony or stylized graphics. Sound effects, ambiance and music are also very fitting. Only animations stand out as mediocre.
In fact pretty much everything that's in the game is good, or great. My gripes are with everything that it doesn't have yet. It's lacking when it comes to meaningful PVP. It lacks content specifically designed for those that have hit the level cap. However, the game has tons of content, and I'm satisfied with what is there. i just want *more*. That's the way an MMO is supposed to make you feel. It's a work in progress after all, though of course the "more" bit has to come before players get bored and leave.
Anyway, I wouldn't say FE is the best MMO to date. For me that vote would go to Ultima Online or Anarchy Online. It certainly stands out among all the other generic titles released the last few years, though, and I think I'd agree if you just said it was the best "new" mmo on the market.
Oh, and I played the game during closed beta... or tried to. It looked terrible, crashed constantly, mobs rubberbanded all over the place and performance was so bad it was unplayable. I dismissed it as a game with potential that I'd try out when a free trial was available, and I'm glad I did. The amount of technical improvements done in 3 months is unbelievable. It's gone from unplayable on low settings to smooth on high/very high for me. Anyone who tried it during beta, or right after launch, and gave up on it because of bad performance and/or graphics should give it another go.
Edit: Just thought I'd comment that shadows are turned off by default for all pre-defined settings except "very high". I wonder how many of those who tried it and commented that the graphics sucked actually found that toggle. I know, personal preference and all, but shadows do make a world of difference. Especially after the second part of the graphics overhaul last week.

From a lot of studies I have done on Asian culture in general, countries (Japan in particular) while respecting the elders seem to hyper-sexualize young people and youths in general. "Porn" featuring cartoon girls is very popular in Japan, as are shops actually selling panties of young girls to adult men. And this is considered somewhat normal for their society. Nobody talks about it but I spent some time in Japan on a business trip a while back.
It was... um, enlightening. Youth and eternally-youthful comics, cartoons, sex objects., etc are enjoyed by the entire spectrum of the community, not just adults as it is in the West. (An adult owning or reading some of this media more common in Japan would probably get him or her labeled a pedophile here in the US.)
Why are things this way? I have no idea. I have great respect for Eastern philosophy, culture, and art. I just couldn't help but noticing this...
Fallen Earth's graphics are gritty and realistic and in no way "childlike" or cartoonish. I suppose I could see why some people would dislike this.

Sorry I should have been more clear, I wasn't referring to FE's graphics as childish, I was only referring to AION and other games from the same part of the world.

Not so bad, they remind me very much of Half Life 2, however that came out in 2004.
For an MMO, they aren't too bad, but people these days compare them to the latest single player or console games and that's when they start saying they are dated.
I'm a person who believes in game play over graphics, so I find pretty much all graphics acceptable in most modern games, but others seem to hold to a different standard.
Respectfully, what MMO right now looks anywhere close to as good as the single-player console games and FPS games coming out...? None that I've seen. Play Dragon Age lately? Notice any MMO with graphics anywhere near that in depth and quality?
Me neither. Same goes for Grand Theft Auto 4, etc., etc. We're not playing a console game or FPS here, people. They need to somehow balance our rabid need for the best graphics with thousands of people playing on a server.
I agree with you completely, yet it seems these days people keep trying to compare MMO graphics with the latest single player games hence the complaints so often voiced here.
I think FE's graphics are just fine, and wouldn't hinder my game play in any way, but others disagree.

I'm here to tell you that the graphics (and the engine) as they stand right now are great (although there is of course still plenty of room for improvement, don't get me wrong). Especially when you compare them to what they were just before launch, and especially how they were back in the early beta and late alpha stage. I joined the FE community on 8/17/08 and was invited to the alpha on 11/17/08. Since then I have routinely been astounded by how much the game engine and graphics have improved.
Even one month ago I was still having trouble even going near a town hub without my FPS dropping to single digits, even with most of the bells and whistles turn off and sliders down to half. Now I routinely see my FPS over 50 and even in busy S1 towns my FPS rarely drops below 20, and that is with everything turned ON, including shadows and the sliders back up to full. When I first started the alpha, the game was virtually unplayable for me, now I can play fine with the graphics settings almost maxed, on the same machine... But like I've said, it's not the graphics that are "bad", some people just prefer a different graphics style.

For the few past years there has indeed been alot of crap out on the market, but finally I feel as there really is something worth the time and effort to play.
I've played a big variety of MMOs since UO came out in '98, which was back in the days something really new, atleast for me, and something never before experienced and ofc totally hooking.
With Fallen Earth I'm having the same feelings again, after so many years of more or less disapointing experiences and maybe already giving up on the hope that there would ever be a game that would be this exciting to play.
I feel among other things that the game has a very well executed crafting system, alot of content gaming wise, and I cant wait what the future brings!

Favorite game of all time.. Ultima-Online '98-'00(pre Renaissance)
Have they fixed the "cluncky" combat? where you feel like you fight with lagg and the corpse slide away when they die?
Havn't experienced this lag u describing.. not atleast in a disturbing way, but the sliding is still there to some level, not that I feel it boughtering me eighter.
Favorite game of all time.. Ultima-Online '98-'00(pre Renaissance)
The graphics are dated because they do not use excessive amounts of bloom and complementary colors.
You all should know that by now. :P
OH YEAH!!! ;0) Silly us!
lol
Yeah....I can see where someone would think this looks like shit.... /rolls eyes If you like....go to my PhotoBucket folder and look at the images in high res. Mind you, this is on a "meh" machine, nothing "new and fancy schmancy."
I saw a few responses that said Fallen Earth. The game sounded familiar I figured I'd surf a bit on the web and learn about it a bit. I have no idea how this game slipped under my radar. This game is a bit unrefined in places I'll admit but as a MMO experience Fallen Earth has reminded me why I play mmo's.
A wild west feel in a lawless world full of humanity clinging to survival. Think of movies like Mad Max, or the Postman. Oh I definately feel that FE isn't for everyone but it's without a doubt for me. You craft out of necessity (and for profit eventually) You build your character how you like to play. If you can do rifles, pistols or run around braining people it's up to you!
Help chat in game is very patient and understanding and the GM's actually chat and help out. They also police up the Barrens chat and keep the channel focussed. I think this brings in a much more community and keeps them playing.
Fallen Earth has a 10 day trial, and you download it from their site. No credit card info asked for. You can't go wrong and have got nothing to lose if you walk away. Before I get flamed: No I don't work for these guys or anything. I've just found myself let down by several big releases over the past couple of years like VG, AoC and WAR. I can't believe a small title like this has captured my interest like this one has.
i really dislike the crafting, the world feels cheap and simple, the graphics simply outdated, and the combat was not even near flawless.
just my opinion :P
Everyone is entitled to opinions.
Personally, I LOVE the crafting. I love that I can queue up a bunch of stuff and be crafting while I'm asleep, logged off having dinner with my family, or even riding around questing.
The world doesn't feel CHEAP at all to ME. Then again, I used to live in Arizona and I LOVE the environments. This is also a post-apocalypse world....so I didn't expect it to look like a fookin' carnival.
The graphics are indeed NOT "out-dated," and that ONE thing, is not an opinion, but a fact. There are threads already posted with my screenshots in them. You just have to have a decent computer to see the game the way it's MEANT to be seen. And...if you have a high end machine, it also helps to know what the options on your card itself actually DO.... (Not saying you don't....just saying....the game looks fuckin' AWESOME on my machine, and I'm not even running a state of the art set up here.)
Also....I love the combat. I LOATHE auto attack. I like being able to use scopes, and actually having to target the mobs with melee weapons or guns. I love that they try to get behind me...I love to have to actually target them with a reticule and not just click them once, get up and go make coffee, and come back to find them dead.
But, like I said....everyone is entitled to have an opinion. Of course, we all think our OWN is the best....lol.
The graphics are undeniably sub par. Descriptions of them as "realistic" are totally deluded. The animations are clunky and the textures are pretty drab and, if I may , appear static, lending a sort of "unreality" to this aspect of the game. However, this didnt prevent me from subbing after two day of the free trial and having the most fun that I have had in an mmo for quite some time.
I dont care that FE has crappy graphics. Its damn fun. Im sorry , but if you cant find yourself immersed in an imaginary world, as multifaceted as that of FE , regardless of its aesthetic presentation, then you need more practice using your own imagination.
Played it for 2 months. I ding lvl 45 on crafter with almost all crafting schools maxed and 236 bonus AP. And then there is a problem...
There is really nothing to do besides being forced to make AP quests all over the map. PvP is meaningless although fun (fps rules). Crafting is really fun but after a while you realize that you will end up crafting only lvl 45 stuff cause there is no degradation or full loot. Everyone have some crafter as alt so you basically crafting only for yourself. Economy is almost non existent. Mobs AI is stupid and you can solo 99% of content (I soloed with crafter which is worse at fighting from other builds). Big plus is open world with no instances. Anyway, game for me was medicore but still better than WoW and Aion - at least something different and original.
Pretty much sums up my experience as well, completed all the content I could find in 2 months without really trying, did everything I could find until it became repetitive, explored for days on end finding quirky stuff (but not much of it out there tbh). It was fun, but then you hit the wall, there is nothing new left to do. Everything is a rehash of other missions and the faction grind is pointless, so is pvp. Also when i was playing mutations were stupidly powerful.
It's a nice game, but it's not original in any way, everything in FE has been done before, and done a lot better im afraid.
Still a game i'd love to return too, but not yet. a 10 day free return so soon smacks of desperation imo. A lot of players have left since release, which seems to be the same in all recent mmorpg releases, but i think FE has suffered more than most.

Well I can say with decent certainty behind it that they can't be hurting that bad. I see tons of people everywhere in Sector 1. Granted a lot could be on trials, but my guild is thriving. We get new people every day, the chats are always busy.
They obviously aren't following the usual pattern of the "A-Team" games, they've got their own thing going. Usually a company will not release a demo/trial until 6 months in, sometimes longer and FE released it three months in, and it's brought in a lot of success that they weren't necessarily expecting.
Perhaps they're sending out this 10 day free return thing, not because their hurting, but because they have truly been working on things (graphics for example) and they want to show off what they've done, perhaps their thinking is that these fixes they've made will bring some old players back.
I started MMOs with EQ1. After playing EQ2 and WoW, I'm back playing EQ1, so you can guess what I like in a game.
FE wasn't even a game I had looked into because I generally prefer a fantasy setting, but after reading all of this thread, you've piqued my interest enough to take a look and try the trial. Thanks for the passionate reviews, both pro and con.

Would love to see screenshots of your max lvl'd character(s), simply because I love seeing how max lvl characters might look like due to the many MANY different armor types, same goes for hoping you might show some screenshots of your craft recipy's, hope to see some recipy's I might get my hands on in the future. This goes for both of you (drago_pl & Zinzan)

I was plodding around this site between games and I caught a thread :
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/266246/What-MMO-are-you-playing-and-why.html
My opinion on fallen earth is a bit negative...
i really dislike the crafting, the world feels cheap and simple, the graphics simply outdated, and the combat was not even near flawless.
just my opinion :P

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy

I don't know, just my two cents.
Didn't realize they finally got the free trial going, was planning on checking this game out once they got that up.
But now I'll have to wait until I'm bored with CoD:MW2 to try it out so I can make the most of the free time to see if I want to sign up.

Thanks in advance, would really appreciate it.
