lol, you obviously don't know what the purpose of a stress test is for.
They do stress test to crash the server with as much people as possible. They see what parts of the server that need to be optimized more, they do a change then try to crash it again, do a change and so on.
Anyone interested to see how the game look like should join, but it will most likely lag as hell.
Btw, this is the first stress test of several. Henrik Nyström at SV wrote:

Ya we tried to give a heads up for early this week.
But this last minute announcement is just for one short stress test which we need now, there will be more testing."
Wow that's only 3.5 hours away... It's a shame most folks won't have enough warning to test it.
Everyone SHOULD get on if you are interested though!

I win!!! LOL@U
Current version is 0.12.16.18 so there is NO need to download 2.7GB patch.
NOTE:
Open Stress Test start time moved UP 1 HOUR!!!! Now starting at 20:30 GMT+1 or 45 minutes from now...

Where? Still says 21.30+1
I have to say, it's barely a stress test if you are telling people via Twitter and the forums that there's a stress test in a few hours.
Stress tests are usually organized and advertised well in advance so they know they have the population to actually "stress" the servers. Unless of course, they just want a marketing 'win' to say "big success!" when the regular folks logged into the server.
Oddly enough, it's funny how they scheduled it during US work hours, and the majority of their players are from the US.
Funny stuff.
Maerlyn replied in the stress-test thread stating it would now open at 20:30 their time.
Looks like they want a stress-test with as few people as possible... seriously.. who announces a stress-test that's going to be in 4 hours from the announcement?
Whatever... I just hope everyone on the fence has a chance to login and take a look around. Doesn;t look like anyone from NA/SA will be able to do so.. but who knows maybe it will run longer or they will leave the accts open after the test.

Basically. Because if it was really an organized stress test and people were there in droves (they always show up for free stuff), then the game would basically not even launch, nevermind people 'stress testing' anything.
At least they brought the odds back into their own favor here, by giving a 3 hour window to get into the game. The only people that will know about the test are the people who play it normally. So the stress test will be oh, maybe 200 people? Hell, they had an "organized" beta event and couldn't even get 200 people to show up, so a 3 hour window for a stress test? It's just for show and marketing, so they can say "we passed the stress test!" for their investors, and launch the game.
We'll see if I'm right.
fortunate for me my dl says 1 hr left
And u think it would be better test it when EU ppl got late night?? That time is the best for tests that require lots of ppl.
[Mod Edit]
No the times would always hurt one group of people.. BUT when you announce the "open" stress-test at 11:00 in the morning (Eastern) on a weekday in the US.. you don't even give those folks a chance to decide on logging in. If they announced it yesterday at least folks would have known and could have re-arranged their schedules...
Seriously.. has anyone ever heard of an "Open Stress test" that gives 4 hours notice? Talk about self-defeating....

Zaxtor99.. if you get a chance please run your stream of the event (which is starting now). I would like to be able to see how many people actually show up (but not so badly as to re-download the game). thx.

Can't argue with that... it really was terribly poor planning on their end... though it was most likely their "plan" all along to release the information this way. This way the game doesn't get an overly large amount of exposure to those that haven't played yet, and they'll still most likely have their server crashes as they were hoping for with their existing playerbase thereby not having to deal with any additional criticism from would-be testers.
If they were serious about testing the server load, they wouldn't limit the time to a few hours, nor would they plan those hours in less then half a days time. Its obvious they knew exactly what they were going for... this wasn't something that just happened by chance.
SV admitted when they announced it ONLY on their forums that they weren't going to hype it up. They think the players that they have who are loyal will spread the word. I don't think there is anything wrong with this. I'm sorry that some people won't be able to log on to the stress test, but SV isn't doing this to give people a demo. They are trying to crash their servers in order to optimize them. If it doesn't work this time they will probably just try again.
The reason to limit the time window of when the actual stress test is going to happen is to force people to log on at the same time in large numbers (i.e. launch day test where masses will log on as the worlds open). It is for the benefit of the developers, not for people to get to play for free for a while as a demo the game.
They have even admitted that IF you are lucky enough to log on, the gameplay will be awful and laggy, so it won't even be that fun, not to mention dealing with non-stop server crashes that they are hoping for.

They just did it for publicity and for more sales. its not a stress test, 4 hours before a stress test they post it in a 6 day old thread? Very unprofessional, but we should be use to that.
Nope, people who didn't purchase/preorder can log in.
As much as I understood from IRC this is one of more stress test sessions.
FFS!
Im away a few hours and miss the chance to see MO : (
Not cool.
Please stream it, or fraps it...or something.
Here is an update
Just find a screenshot of MO posted.
Put it into a video loop. The same screenshot.
That's basically what the game will be like.
so where do you go to activate the game or your account or is it related to your forum name or am i too late for the stress test?
There is another stress test tomorrow at the same time.
