Hello all, I've been playing the beta for awhile now and there have been afew things about the game I believe to be fantastic and well done, on hte other hand I also believe there are afew things in the game itself, that need work.
Alittle about me, I have beta tested over ten different MMO's in my MMO career ( If you can call it a " Career " ), and this MMO, STO, reminds me of the good old days of Earth And Beyond to a certain extent.
Graphics: I have to say that the graphics of this game are extremely well done and don't need much room for improvements, for example, when you are flying towards a planet you see the sun glaze off of the surfice and off of one side of your ship and not the other side, it does'nt " Bleed Through " which is always nice to see, very well done. The only thing I can say about the game wich I find kind of odd is " Sector space" the entire area looks like a galaxy map in which it was designed to allow players to freely move from one system to another vice versa with sectors as well, still a thing to get used to but still enjoyable.
Gameplay: The game play feels little like Pirates Of The Burning see, similar style on ship and on land, however, the combat both and land ( Away team ) and in space is much faster then POTBS and just as enjoyable. Star Trek Online offers a tactic based skill system, so most of the time for example, if you rush into one or two enemies thinking you could take them out without gathering some Information on the target itself, you'll quickly be overcome. Maneuvering your ship also requires skill, you have to account for how fast you are flying to the targets and how far away from your team you are. The turn rate of the starter ship on the federation side of things turns really wide and sometimes can be frustrating but there are afew things you can get to counter this, for example, you could get better engines that have turning strength and or consoles that also contribute to that status. The ground combat or away team feature is fun and exciting, nothing slugish here, feels like a third person shooter with Star Trek mixed into it, when you beam down to a planet you can even choose your Away team, outfit them with weapons, armor, skills ect, now you can even rename them, First , Middle and last name which is a pretty interesting feature, you can also coordinate their attacks for different situations.
PvP: The Player Vs Player aspect in STO is amazingly fun, the space combat which I endured for over nine hours is something like the way Word Of Warcraft has it done, you que up either by going to location A: Where you can goto Klingon space and goto the corresponding system and participate in one of the many different PvP games they have set up. If your like me, and your too far off to goto the planet to que for a PvP game, then there's always Plan B:You can que anywhere in the universe by simply clicking on the little arrow on the side of the radar and by clicking on PvP ques your all set. The ground combat PvP hostile, is fun as well and rewarding, even if you loose you are getting something, that goes for space combat as well.
Missions: There are alot of missions you can do in STO. The mission based system in STO is similar to other MMO's , you talk to a NPC or in this case " Hail Starfleet " either hand in hte mission objective or accept a new mission. There are many different mission types, for example, there are missions where you need to kill X amount of these guys to grab X amount can be abit tedious but rewarding, there are also fleet actions, in which for example you goto star base 24 accept the mission granted just by flying close to it and entering the battle for the space station, you are not alone when you enter, there are tons of Klingons and other Federation allies ( Players ) able to give you a hand in completing this similar gole. The mission system is fairly standard and anyone who played recent MMOS will feel right at home in no time.
Encounters : Encounters is a neat idea, you fly in sector space trying to get to the system you would like to go and a Klingon Bird Of Prey attacks you, you are then brought into a instance with afew other players , the goal? To destroy the Klingons, however encounters can range in different levels and can be tough to complete on your own. Most of the encounters I've seen have at least 30-40 enemies and you have to destroy each squadron to reach the goal of the mission.
This concludes some of the interesting features STO has to offer, a very enjoyable yet challenging MMO which should appeal to many people. This is still a beta version of the game, there are bugs that are annoying there are afew things that need attention, like animation where you change guns on your character , for example, you have a Phaser pistol and then switch over to a Phaser Rifle, the animation looks like your character is still holding a pistol but your actualy holding a rifle with one hand, things like that, small little things that need to be corrected. All in all Star Trek Online gives the feel of a Star Trek Theme with a hint of a traditional RPG.....
I would rate STO a 8.5 out of 10. Feel free to comment on my review as I welcome it , I would also like to think what score everyone else would rate STO at, Thanks!

First, comparing this to E&B is just wrong:) E&B had 3 full factions, Crafting, Mining career, Trading career, More combat options, specialize in missiles or beams or Guns. Just a much more thought out and complete game. It had it's problems, but still was much better game than STO.
Graphics and sound in STO are fairly nice, the best parts of the game for sure. 8 out of 10 for those.
Game play, is just boring. I do not see where the tactics are at all. Choosing to turn to the left or the right first to let that side shield facing take some damage or just do the reverse and keep repairing shields on the front is not tactics. 6 out of 10. Is generous.
PVP, just crap. All small instances, queue hell, no reason to participate what so ever. 3 out of 10.
Missions, also crap. And saying that there are many types of missions? My many and yours are obviously a different type of measurement. All seem to be pretty much go here and kill this group, then move a bit kill that group, and repeat till all are dead and move on to the next. Other than a few fly here and kill these THEN get close to something and scan it, not much to do but kill everything in sight. Even the diplomacy (if you can call them that) are just run around click the right chat box and move on. 4 out of 10.
This is a combat game, not even a good combat game at that. The one and only thing this game has going for it is the IP name.
Being generous i would give it a 5 out of 10 and that is for the faint hope that in a year or 2 if it is still being worked on it might be worth a sub.
And this is why I'm likely not going to pick up STO despite the fact that I find it to be a fairly fun game in itself with potential. At least, more fun than any other space based MMO on the market at the moment. The community on the whole has decided to "shun" the game for some opinionated reason or another, and its going to carry that stigma throughout the lifetime of the game, and frankly, it's not even out yet and I'm already sick of the community that's formed up around it. I just want to forget the game exists and how fucking stupid the MMO "community" can be.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

The game is awsome!
Totally agree with the OP, very nice and accurate review. I have 2 close friends in OB and they completly agree with you too.
I look forward to trying out the Encounters.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
Thanks guys for the honest feed back, I really appreciate it!
If you guys are playing STO , please, feel free to add me to your pal list, maybe we can run some missions, PvP, Encounters ect, my name is Aeolron@Rudo would look forward to it!!
Yeah I get what your saying , I compared it to a certain extent. The " Feel" of STO is similar to Earth And Beyond, thats why I stated that, but I do agree with you on Mining, crafting Ect. It's nice to have a space MMO again, and frankly, I cannot wait to pick my copy up and have some fun , start a fleet. The game is much better now since they opened the rest of the game up, give it a shot.
Yet again ,thank you for your feed back, much appreciated!
E&B isn't exactly a fair comparison either. That game was under development for four and a half years without any dev switching and had no ground combat, just social space stations. STO, as it stands today, had to be put together in less than half that time, as they essentially lost the majority of the development when they switched from Perpetual to Cryptic. I won't sugar coat it. What they are releasing is far from what they likely would have liked to consider "finished'". That being said, its an option of "release now" or "release never" due to licensing expectations and funding. It would be stupid to say "play anyway! It could be great later!" because thats fanboy talk. They very well may do nothing interesting with it in the future. But people have taken it upon themselves to take all their slights with Cryptic over CO and everything else and just make HUGE FUCKING ISSUES out of every little thing because for some reason they don't seem to be able to rest or feel vindicated unless the game fails because it didn't meet their standards or expectations.
As I said, I had fun with the beta, but I was hesitant to play it afterwards due to the uncertainty with where they would go from release. At the time, I was willing to give it a shot anyway as , like I said, it was fun. However, the rest of the community seems to have gotten their wish, and I'm not even going to bother now. The whole ordeal has put a bitter taste for the game and MMOs in general in my mouth again, and I want nothing more than to just forget how stupid the rest of the MMO community can be and put this bullshit behind me.
It's also a shame, as this would have been the only space based MMO that's actually somewhat interesting, as Eve, for all its expansions and pretty graphics, is boring, lifeless, and based around metagaming and getting fun through making other peoples lives miserable which is less than fun in my book. Jumpgate seems to be dead in the water as expected, and Black Prophecy, even if it doesn't share the same fate as Jumpgate, is being made by the devs of Neocron and is supposed to be "highly casual" and "heavily instanced" which is less than encouraging.

And what development did Perpetual actually do other than some rendered screens? They had the IP for 5 years and didn't do crap, they only talked a good game and that was it. I agree, the haters are really trying to blow everything out of proportion. I mean, I understand the klingon folks being pissed, but the rest of the stuff is just personal wants. I have enjoyed CB and OB and I am looking forward to release as I have already bought my lifetime sub. The naysayers can cry all they want but this game is going to be around for a long time and its going to get a lot of love from the devs.
As for dealing with the haters, just ignore them. They wont be in the game and if they are, they wont stay long, simply because they will have to nitpick about everything and wont be able to stand it for very long. Then you will get to the real community which from what I have seen, is going to be very strong despite all the crap the haters have tried to spread.
The game has improved a lot after last update. They fixed tons of bugs , even it seems to run better now. Small lags spikes here and there but is ok.
Of course there is ton of work to do, but I'm giving a bit of trust to cryptic this time.
They opened it up the level cap thus a lot of new missions appeared. Some missions are interesting and are long enough to keep the feeling of the history.
I'm having fun, I just can't wait to come back home to test new stuff, new missions with our fleet.
Don't let those people that didn't enjoy the game dissapoint you before trying it out. Go, give it a try and you will get your own thoughts.
My hype: 8,5
Ya shouldnt not play a game just because there are a few forum dwellers who feel like they've been wedgied... it probably reminds them of highschool and they release there pent up frustration.
if you enjoy the game play it, if not then dont. Personally I enjoyed it but at the same time I didnt, it felt lacking to me, ill give it a try in 6 months and then see how I feel, or maybe a year.
but just because people dont like it, doesnt mean people wont play it, I mean damn, half the people who hate a game will go out and buy it anyway, and yeah they are gonna bitch and moan, but they always do.
the game doesnt have to have millions of people to be successful, hell its all on one server and so heavily instanced that it could have 20'000 players and seem quite full... its not like you can see the other people anyway, just the ones on your node.
