After reading all the negative reviews and comments for this game I decided I would jump in the beta and give it a try myself.
Honestly, I'm not sure what all the griping is about. I guess expectations were too high (again). I jumped into the game just wanting to check it out and see what it was about. Although, I wasn't expecting much I ending up playing for a good 5-6 hours. While I will admit, the game is nothing revolutionary, it does have some unique ideas. I enjoy the ship combat very much, and the ground combat is pretty standard mmo fare (with a team aspect that I love). The missions (so far) seem plentiful, there's plenty of other players around, and contrary to what I've read on here there is exploring to do.
My biggest gripe would be space. Of course, I would rather have space that's not broken down into sections (instances), and when I first heard that , it rubbed me the wrong way. But while playing the game, though, it didn't bother me at all. Its a different system, and while its not a big, wide, persistent world, (which I know most of us prefer). It works.
So I guess if you haven't tried STO, then try it and do so with an open mind. Enjoy the game for what it is and not for what you wanted or thought it would be.
The best thing i can say about it is what SHOULD matter the most. I'm having a lot of fun playing it. and that overrides any complaints I would have about it.

I agree with you, the game is a blast and the people that talk crap about it need to find something else to do, they always compare it to champions online and in my opion , it's not a far comparision.Funny how most people know how to create a MMO, considering they tlak about buisiness models IPs ect ect , I would like to see them make a MMO and get hammered on the way down, so fed up with the babies and loud months on this site. Honestly, this game is well done and it is alot of fun, I'm glad your enjoying it. at least there's aton of us in game that feel the same way! Cheers
I agree up to a certain point. Not being able to log on because they don't have suficent hardware is starting to get on my nerve since I can only play during prime time.
Yes this game is fun no doubt about it;
But for how long?
I enjoy seeing a positive post as well. I do agree that the PvE nerf is a little unrattling, but I do believe that the purpose for the nerf is to get bug reports for some of the higher level content. I think everything will be back to normal and challenging once we wipe and go live.
I thouroughly enjoy the feeling of being a part of 'Star Trek' episodes, and I am planning on purchasing a lifetime sub so that I can enjoy the game on my time, as it matures.
Kudos for a positive post!!!
Fun is the most important part of a game, Ihave been playing sto since open beta started and yesterday decided to play Lotro for a bit and was bored because of the slow pace and it just was not a much fun, then I tried playing eve and what a bore fest, so you are right fun is the most imp thing in a game.
A lot of things are fun when they are new, is it going to be fun after a month of the same thing over and over again....
I had fun for a few hours as well.
Then I got a refund.
I'm with the OP. I came in with a VERY negative attitude, expecting it to be just as ghey as the movies. To my surprise, I had an absolute blast...in space.
Ground combat needs work. It's manageable I guess, but it feels entirely too clunky. I don't really feel like "I" am controlling my toon, just their delayed reactions. Reminds me a bit of "Dragons Lair", the 1st laser disc/CGI type video game. You'd react (move joystick)...wait...cut scene would play showing your action (took forever!). While it may not be THAT bad, I do feel a certain amount of disconnect from my toon during ground combat.
As far as all the "instances", did anyone read WHY they did that? They wanted to create a sense of being "alone" and they were trying to make it unique to YOU so that you did feel like you were "exploring". IMO, it works really well...sure beats seeing 20 other Federation ships in an area I just got a distress call from.
As I said...I agree with the OP that the game is fun so far. Maybe it boils down to what our expectations were?! Mine were LOW!
That question can be ,..and is, asked about EVERY SINGLE MMO.

But for how long?
As long as i want? no MMO promises lifetime of fun and content.

No, but I have a feeling very many people will have fun for 1-2 months and be done with the game. It doesn't look like a game someone could have fun for years with. I could be wrong though, but I doubt it.
I'm having a lot of fun. That last patch really improved performance to the point I am considering holding off on upgrading my rig. I still need to test it out in pvp though. The game has an interesting core, and I can envision them refining, polishing and expanding on it over time, so I am looking forward to the live game.
Space and ground are both fun. The battles feel very Star Treky to me. I love my avatars and while I am still getting used to having BO's it's kind of a nice change. I enjoy using the character creation to get them to look just the way I want them.
Some people complained the game was too hard before. Then they release a patch and now some people say too easy. I'm sure they will continue to tweak difficulty and abilities as all mmos do. The thing is in all games there are 10 percent of peeps who say game is too easy and 10 percent who complain too hard, yet I think these are the most vocal as they are the least satisfied. But the game makes more money and hence should be balanced on the other 80 percent of peeps who fall in the middle.
I'm looking forward to this game going live now. I want to get in and get busy.

Again matter of personal preference. I have seen people getting bored of games in 2 days while others play the same for years. Its hard to say who will like a particular game for how long.
People who are in habit to jump from MMO to MMO looking for new addiction will probably leave any ways. No game can satisfy such gamers
I think it's fun enough for a new game. Not something I'd want grind for hours on end, but maybe for a mission or two. After that, it's de ja vu all over again. For me. I'm having a hard time imagining fun end-game content, so have to wait and see on that.

Partially true, but not really. Less about the player type and more about the game. Games that have depth and challenge as well as fun will hold onto subs longer than shallow & easy fun games.

Like i said i have played deep and challenging games like Anarchy Online, EVE, Fallen Earth, Ryzom etc and i have equally enjoyed easy and more casual oriented simple games. In the end it depends upon players and their expectations. A game that that is easy and shallow to one could be more fun to someone else. Not everyone looks for depth and challenge in games because some of us deal with it plenty in our daily lives.
A lot of people just want to kick back and enjoy.

I can agree with that. Good point.
