I too am tempted by Darkfall but am holding out for a trial should one ever get released. I have impulse bought way too many MMO's and am just starting to learn my lesson!

That's understandable. However, if you enjoy UO and Shadowbane type games, you should go for it. I jumped in without a trial a few weeks ago and it's the best MMO I've played since SWG pre-cu. Looking back on the garbage games I've played recently makes me shake my head compared to Darkfall. It made me remember why I love sandbox games so much.

Just a a point of reference for the future I can not imagine a game that would offer a free trial and not put it in huge bold letters on the front page of the website.
I know that sounds kind of d*ckish of me to say but it is what it is.
(p.s. I love how the new button for buy now is EXACTLY as I decribed it would be big and red. I toot my own horn becuase I have low self esteem)

You're killing me here Zekiah, well my wallet specifically ;-)
I did love UO back in the day, since then I've yet to play a game which I've loved as much. I speak of course, of platonic love. I had pretty much assumed that a trial was way out of sight for the forseeable future. I am looking for a new home though, jumping from trial to trial is becoming tiring and bandwidth heavy!
P.S. Sorry Sebali, I realised I answered your question without in fact answering it, but no, there is no trial currently!

I understand about money but get this. The game is SO good that I actually PAID for my friend to get the game because he's short on cash atm. It was his birthday and I went silly because frankly, the games we've played together lately were just crap and I really wanted him to play this game. If cash is an issue I won't try to force you into buying the game because I understand. But if you do have some spare coin laying around and are looking for some game time to invest in, I'd say invest in this game.

I'd buy it if I knew for sure I'd get my money's worth of playtime out of it. On a side note, I did attempt to download the client via the torrent file but it seemed to not go past a few Kbs, is there a direct download after you purchase the game or something similar? (assuming I do go ahead and purchase it of course).

After purchase they sent me the link for download which took about an hour and a half with cable. I thought it was going to take forever by what some people were saying but it was pretty quick for me.

consider for a moment why and when companies offer free trials in the first place. They usually do it when the population starts to drop becuase there are better options out in the game space which usually happens well into the games maturity which from the standpoint of skill progression can be somewhat of a pain if the entire server has 100 on most things while you have 0.

I only played UO very briefly(a month or so b4 SWG came out) and i did enjoy it.
I LOVEd SWG till they screwed it up. and the few times i have gone back to playuing it i loved it again. albeit oly for a month or so. basically till I couldnt stand the lack of other players anymore.
I'm a huge fan of sandboxes and while I'm not some allstar pvper it is what i enjoy most about games.
I followed darkfall for years, albeit from afar. I didnt want to try at release because, honestly, I didnt trust tasos to pull thru on 95% of his promises.
now about a year after launch, and also jumping from trial to beta to trial of other games, I'm really wanting to try this out.
perhaps you all could answer a few questions for me.
I could give a rats ass about pve for the most part. I'll participate in raids and such if needed but would rather spend the day pvping. with that comes a certain level of asshattery to be expected from other players.
how bad is it really? what i mean is, is the game full of leet speaking caffined o8ut 14 year olds?
is it possible to find a mature guild? I'm 34 y/o and dont want to deal with the whiney little shits all day in my own guild.
I've read time and again about exploits/hacks/cheats/whatnot.....while i realize alot of that is just someone crying cause they got beat, I'm willing to believe that they did/do exist. how bad is it?
guess thats all i got right now. wasnt planning on asking more questions.
That definitely goes into the 'pros' section for me then. I'll think on it some more but this is definitely swaying me so far! Thanks for the speedy responses ;-)
Np. I'm bored at work day dreaming about getting home so I can play Darkfall lol.
Addicted? Nah, not me!

umm, no. Many games offer trials when....umm, the game doesnt suck and they think a trial will showcase how good their game is. Darkfall doesnt have one (although tasos very specifically and unequivacably said they WOULD) because they DONT want people to see what they would be buying before they do. That, imo , is the ONLY reason a company wouldnt offer one.

It's not too bad but you will find your regular ***hats in game. What you need to ask yourself is, WHEN you die, will you get pissy or chalk it up to a learning experience and get back on the horse. I could tell you some fantastic stories of PvP I've seen in the three weeks I've been playing, it's a RIOT lol! But yes, you do need to watch your back at all times which makes the game a lot of fun to play. is it possible to find a mature guild? I'm 34 y/o and dont want to deal with the whiney little shits all day in my own guild. I'm going to PM you about that, I have the perfect guild for you. I've only seen one questionable thing, some guy bounced on my head and flew or something. I don't think it's bad but Aventurine seems to take care of those players quickly. guess thats all i got right now. wasnt planning on asking more questions. any help you all can give would be great.
thanks Np, PM inc!

For all those "almost persuaded" to purchase this game, remember never believe the hype.
I'd be highly suspect of a game with:
1) Low numbers (not many people playing)
2) Nothing but "this game is AWESOME!" from the few people playing it.
3) A niche game (one reason why there's few players, duh!)
4) No trial.
The biggest of the red flags is of course being no trial. I'm not even calling into question the developer's rep for keeping his word. Not even calling into question anything about game content. All of that is moot and irrelevant.
#4 should really be a big slap in the face, or more like a sledge hammer over your head to say, "wake up dummy, there's a reason why there's no free gameplay.
The reason is because the game just might not be living up to the hype.
Yeah, it's all hype, pay no attention. I enjoy wasting my time posting lies about a game when I'm supposed to be working.

No free trial = no gold spammers. I hope they never have a free trial
Gold spammers would be chain-ganked and griefed right the fuck out of the game.
Could be kinda fun.
Problem is, most of the noobs are getting chain-ganked and griefed right out of the game. That is what happened to me.
@OP: I liked UO, but I did not like DF for the reasons I listed above. So if someone says "If you liked UO u will like DF" - thats complete nonsense. UO and DF are very different games. UO was semi FFA PvP, DF is FFA. UO had better character progression then DF does, IMO.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
