When will there be a real space MMO?
And with "real", I mean:
- Endless space/planets to explore. Yes, in reality, we don't know if space is finite or infinite, but a finite space with borders (like in EVE) just wouldn't fit in a TRUE space MMORPG.
- NO instances whatsoever, everything is 1 space, the only thing that would that could have a "loading screen" would be when you cross the distances between galaxies, by means of jumping or using a jumpgate.
- Seamlessly landing a spaceship on a planet and taking off back into space.
- Being able to build settlements/player cities on planets.
- Being able to terraform planets.
- Being able to customize everything of your spaceship/avatar. Your avatar is a real person you can walk around with and do stuff with on planets, not just an avatar like in EVE.
- Forming huge alliances between players which control certain sectors in space, and then waging warfare with one another
The only game that seems to come close to all of this nowadays is EVE online. However, EVE is more of an intricate space combat game with a steep learning curve than a true space MMO.
I want to see all of the above and more in 1 big MMORPG. Will this ever be possible or is it just a technical impossibility?

probably never. it would take real time to travel from planet to planet. Imagine being in a shuttle for a few hours to go to a planet. SWG was cool that you could look out in space and see other people in dog fights while in a ship but flying manually from planet to planet was cheapened because you could still instantly fly.
Well I'm assuming when we have the technology to jump between galaxies, we would also have the technology to travel at a decent speed from planet to planet and to other solar systems, not at speeds that would take forever to get there.
You have to keep in mind i don't want a simulation of how it would be in real life. It's still a game, ofcourse.
Eve with Dust 514 and their walking in stations expansion (both of which are still in development) will cover almost every one of these aspects. Although I agree with it having a steep learning curve 95% of the people are very mature and helpful and will help you get over the hump.
We are the movers and shakers of the world, forever.
try SWG if you havent
so from day 1 to day 1?
You've been playing to much EVE if you ask me. It just sounds like EVE with a list of additions you wish it had. And you're asking for too much. Though EVE is the likely the only space MMO currently out, you don't have to think that it is the only way to make a space MMO.
I admit, it sounds pretty cool, but really it's just what EVE might be if it continues for another 10-20 years.
Now, listen to my spiel about the universe. Even if you are going 1000 times the speed of light, you still aren't going very fast when compared to the sheer vastness of the galaxy alone. Just to put it into perspective, it takes about 6 hours for light to travel from the sun to pluto (but since it has a weird orbit pattern, the time varies). Might I remind you that according to Albert Einstein (at least I think Albert Einstein), NOTHING travels faster than light. Nothing. And that's just in out own small solar system. Who knows how long it takes for light to travel from say, one galaxy to another. The truth is, there are so many galaxies with so many stars with so many planets. Just think about that for a while, think about the limitations, the incredibleness of the universe and the amount of planets that are waiting to be explored. Think about it and you'll understand why a true space game wont be possible (for a while).
This statement is false.

I don't think the OP really understand just how massive MMOs are.
Let me put it into perspective, think of some of the most contentless commercial MMOs out there. The ones that have hardly crap to do after about 2weeks and not much to do in those 2weeks anyway, I'm not going to name any names but I have a few in mind. Those MMOs took at least twice as long and twice as many resources of the biggest, most content filled single player game you've ever played. Cryptic MMOs excluded.
Trihflu, is exactly right. This might be EVE in another 10-20yrs, and I honestly think the game will last that long if not longer given the fact that their expansions and support for the game hasn't even slowed down in the past 7yrs added to the nature of the game itself. Mark my words, EVE will be the longest lasting MMO of all time.

Didn't I already clarify this?
It's a game. Wether going faster than the speed of light in the real world is possible or not doesn't matter. In the game it would be possible, and travelling times to key points shouldn't take that long. For instance going from 1 galaxy to another shouldn't take longer than 2 minutes, since you can warp to the jumpgate and then jump to another galaxy.
The game wouldn't be true to scale ofcourse, the enormously vast distances between solar systems and galaxies would ofcourse have to be "adjusted" in order to allow for enjoyable playing.
You just want everything then. Sorry, nobody is going to ever have everything you could possibly want. I suggest making your own or something.
You want Big, You want Realistic, you want Instant Gratification, you want everything to be tangible....

Here it say's release somewhere 2010: http://ipp.gsfc.nasa.gov/mmo/
I would have to get out my 'I give a crap research glasses', to confirm what I,m about to say from memory, but hasnt the theory that nothing can go faster than light been challenged by Quantum Pyhsics advancment (of theories) over the last 10 years...
Oh and observation of warping sub atom particles....Going from memory, I aint a scientist I just watch way to much Discovery Science channels. Someone corret me if Ive recalled wrong.
Black Prophecy all the way! Not sure when its released though.
Obviouse question here but why?
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
Infinity has a procedural universe with seamless planets on which you can land. It is not instanced, owning settlements/stations/cities for player corps is planned; however it won't have avatar/walking at release.
Infinity: The Quest for Earth, space-sim MMO with a seamless procedural galaxy.
Obviouse question here but why?
excellent gfx, way ,way more action-ish, and twitch based dogfigthing rather than EvE´s turn-based
No, this game is more of a space shooter.
Lets assume the following:
- Sandbox game
1) allows for player manipulation of the environment (celestial bodies and space)
- High tech
1) Instant travel (super fast travel. I.E. you can cross the galaxie in a few minutes... system to system travel in a few seconds... intra system travel... few seconds - few minutes). Perhaps even galaxie to galaxie travel.
2) High speed construction (terra forming takes a few minutes - few days... depending on scope and scale, space stations can be built in a few minutes to days... again, scale)
3) Player manipulation (destruction or use) of other player built objects
4) NPC faction to get people started/ high sec space.
I think this is what you are getting at for your game.
Now, lets examine what you are asking for. You want an open space area where you can travel to wherever you wish, to do whatever you wish within the universe. This is near (I would like to say it is but I do believe nothing is impossible) impossible for the following reasons.
1) Scale: Our galaxie contains 100 BILLION stars (approx). Each star has a "planetary" system. There are also multitudes (read, near infinite) of other celestial bodies/areas/"things" in between these "solar systems". Imagine coding 100 billion systems... even if you randomized and allowed your code to generate these systems the memory involved in tracking this type of environment (with, lets say, hundreds of thousands of people on it - which by the way would mean you saw almost nobody, ever, due to the scale of the galaxie alone - not counting if you allow for inter galactic travel. Even if 1 billion people played this game... there would be 100 systems for each of them to play in and do stuff, each... again not counting other galaxies... of which there are near infinite.
2) Processing power: We, as far as I am aware, would not have, currently or in the near future, the computers that could track several hundred thousand people on one server, each doing their thing, affecting the game world for each and every other hundreds of thousands of players... It just can't be done without instances... IMO with current tech.
3) Development cost: Given the above... if it were possible, imagine the time and hardware such a game would cost to make... I would hate to see the box price and sub fee on this game... I imagine not many of us on this forum could pay for it... which would mean that it would not be finacially viable.
All in all, what you want would be a very cool "game" but there is no chance it could happen for a long time to come.
