     Yeah same exact thing happened to me. Just recently got an e-mail stating I had been involved in gold selling and all this shit, when my account hasn't been active in almost a year. What a pile of fuck. Not that I even wanna play the game ever again, but it's my property!

    Same situation with me.   I'm careful in what I do.   I'm not blaming Blizzard on this.   They said it was most likely a 3rd party  program (add on).  

    I think the problem with the way battlenet is handled is that they require you to use your email address as the sign on for the account.   You can't keep your email address from everyone, but I can assure you nobody knew the name of my account prior to the switch to battle.net.   Once they got your account name then all they need to do is to figure out your password.  I had a very strong password with numbers, letters and capital letters in complete random order, so I'm leaning towards the keylogger theory myself.

    If you don't transfer your WoW account to Bnet, how do you expect to use it? Its all tied in to Bnet now.  I was one of the first to purchase one of the authenticators, as I was able to predict how bad things would get.  Using email addresses is not a bright move, who ever came up with that "genius flash" needs to be sent back to the mail room. 

     

    I find it a bit suspicious that they would create a less secure method of sign on...then SELL an item to correct it.

    Its like microsoft charging for anti-spyware for Windows because they designed their OS with so many security flaws.

    Im getting emails about "compromised account" and "password change" two or three times a week. Blizzard really screwed the pooch on this one.

    The more I think about it...The more absurd it becomes.    Charge extra money for additional account security?  If these devices are required to increase account security then they should be included with the product.   

    As it stands these "authenticators" managed to lock me out of my own..compromised account.

    Ive cancelled my subscription. It ends in a few days. Games are my stress reducer and I dont need this stuff. Constant emails and from what im reading here Blizzard isnt acting very quickly to help people.

    Wow that's fucking hilarious, I never considered that response to be funny or humorous until just now...

    All I can say is I have been been playing WoW since release (4 years ago?) with the same account, no problems whatsoever.  I stop playing, I get the Anniversary invite to try the game for 10 days again for free so I do.  But I have to convert my account to a battle.net account, which I do.  3 days ago I get a mysterious email stating my account has all the sudden been compromised!  Oh snap!

    And look there's a massive thread on mmorpg.com about battle.net accounts being compromised!  

    It must be a huge COINCIDENCE!!!!!!!!!

    Third:  Hackers are Hackers because they are good at what they do. If they want to get your login/pass....its only a matter of time before YOU (not Blizzard) falls for one of their ploys. The Authenticator merely "has your back" when you were stupid enough to hand over your account info.



    Like I said. The choice is simple.

     

    Edit:  PS - I agree that BNet forcimg you to use your email as a login make it WAY easier for hackers to compromise your account. But still...with the Authenticator, there is no way they can even touch your account. Hands down.

    First: I havnt been hacked...yet but somehow the hackers know my email address now.

    Second: I agree except that I can cancel the subscription which I have done until Blizzard fixes their mess.

    Third: Seems the hackers got real good at what they do about the time of the battlenet sign up. And like I said, a lot of people got stupid at the same time huh?

    I'm glad to hear you haven't been hacked. I have never been hacked but I can only guess as to how it would feel. Still $6.50 is practically nothing compared to all the grief you will go through when/if your account is hacked.

    Even if your account is cancelled, they can still access it, activate it, logon to your characters and rape them off all their gold and items. Then cancel your account again.

    And yes, I agree. With BNet making everyone use their email as a login, makes it SUPER easy for hackers to now access people's accounts. However, if they merely had an Authenticator, hackers would hit a solid brick wall....end of story.

    I have played WoW since beta and my account has been active the entire time and I'm very much a propoent of the game and have staunchly defended Blizzard and WoW.

    I have worked as a mainframe programmer for over 20 years at some of the largest companies in the US including Sprint, MCI, Verizon and Southwest Airlines accessing various databases and sometimes dealing with the security of those databases.

    I have been working with PC's since I was 16, some 30 years ago.  I have built, upgraded and serviced my own PC's.  I have fixed countless numbers of other people's PC's including finding and removing viruses or other malware since the days of DOS.  I have coded in HTML and C++.  My friends consider me an expert and come to me when their PC is not working.

    I have always had an anti-virus package installed on my PC and it's always updated.

    I always have the latest updates for Windows installed on my PC.

    I do not visit unsecure websites.

    I do not fall for phishing e-mails.

    I don't give out my password.

    I'm aware of most of the most common techniques that hackers use to try to compromise your data.

    I have a firewall on my PC that I constantly monitor

    I have visited websites that will check to see if my PC is vulnerable to attack and my PC always comes up clean.

    And yet my WoW account information WAS compromised in April of this year.  After it was compromised I did a full system scan of the only PC that I use to play the game with 2 different Anti-virus packages and nothing was found.  I have yet to determine exactly how my account information was compromised.

    I understand people's reluctance to believe that it could be a Blizzard problem.  In fact I am very reluctant myself to believe that it's a Blizzard problem, however I WON'T rule it out like so many others are attempting to do.  Just because it's not probable does not mean it's impossible.  Security breaches do happen to even the most secure data in the world if only for a brief period of time, but that is usually all it takes, a very brief time.

    It's no skin off my nose if you want to continue to believe that's it's ALL user error.  You're probably correct.  I just wish you wouldn't force your opinion down other's throats who may not agree or insinuate they don't have a clue about security.


     



    Pappy, since it sounds like you're in the trade I'm sure you're well aware of this, and for anyone who isn't just go find yourself a decent IT related news site and you will see that companies that SHOULD be secure get hacked ALL the time, most of the time people only hear about it when it's a financial company who is required by law to disclose this info to it's customers, and even then it's usually weeks to months later before they do so. I am NOT saying Blizzard/Activision security has ever been compromised, but I am saying it is well within the realm of possibility and they are under no legal obligation to admit it if it ever does happen. From a shareholder perspective it would be best to keep such news as quiet as possible.

    In my own case I was responsible for my account being compromised, BUT I am uncomfortable with the amount and type of information other people were able to get out of Blizzard "on my behalf" without my consent or account information details.

     

    To summarize - Do not transfer your account to battle.net or it will get hacked and Blizzard is under no requirement to tell you about it.  So there's nothing you can do to get it back.



     

    Varchar, you know that's now what either of us are saying and it's posts like this that undermine what we are trying to say.  Posts like this do nothing more than try to throw a bad light on Blizzard.  I love Blizzard and I love their products, anyone who's been on this forum for awhile knows that, so please don't use my posts to try to legitimize your own feelings.

    I'm not sure what you people are confused about, this was something that Blizzard initiated, not the users.  And now our accounts are being compromised because of their actions, not ours.

    Also I can assure you that my personal email password is just as secure as my original WoW password was, and that Wow password was safe for 4 years, and now out of nowhere my account got "compromised".  Whatever compromised means, because they don't actually tell you when you call them, they just say that you have a virus and your account has been logged into by someone other than yourself, which is bad LOL!

    WHAT A FUCKING SCAM !

    Why don't they just come out and say "When we transferred your account to battle.net we accidentally sent our database information to a porno website, so your account credentials may not be safe."

    Honestly, I don't play World of Warcraft anymore, so I haven't followed the transition over to Battlenet (tho when they first launched it, I transferred my account over to Battlenet the day of).





    The point is, Hackers are crafty. Its only a matter of ime before they do get access to your information. There is no sure-fire way to avoid it...no matter how PC-tech you are. They will get it.





    Anyone who has a Blizzard Authenticator, knows what I'm talking about. You simply have no worries even if they do get your information. Because there is no way in hell they can physically "push" that little button and get the 6-digit code that is only valid for 60 seconds to login to your account.





    There is simply no way to get your account even compromised with an Authenticator (unless the Hacker personally knows you and steals your Authenticator from your hands LOL).

    Well I still don't understand the logic behind your post.  I think it is reasonable to expect companies to keep information safe, and that if they are compromised that they should let customers know about it.

    In this case I still think that it's possible Blizzard WAS compromised and they are playing the bullshit "You were hacked" card to everyone that is getting screwed by this.

    I am one of these people.  I have played this game fairly for 4 fucking years, I never sold an account, never gave a friend my login, never bought gold, but I still get fucked and I'm really upset about it because I have no explanation.

    Even if someone hacks Blizzard and gets everyone's account info, they still cannot access your account if you have an Authenticaor. I'm tellin' you man, just do it. You'll never have to worry again. I swear.

     My account was recently hacked.  I haven't played WoW in OVER A YEAR.  It's not even installed on my PC...but somehow my information got in the hands of someone else.

    The only reason I found out was because my account got suspended for "gold-selling practices".

    I called and talked to a few friends who said that my toons had recently been spamming chat/whispers.  

    Still no explanation on how my information got out...I'm of the opinion that Blizzard might have a bigger problem, especially when considering the number of accounts reported compromised by people lately.

    I played this game like I was supposed to for a long time.  If you fucked up and gave my credentials to a Chinese farmer, just tell me.  If you are going to require me to buy your Authenticator to keep playing, just tell me.  But don't falsely claim I got hacked and need to buy your Authenticator to fix everything because it's my fault!  Jesus christ I hate you all...

    I could care less but i have no idea how they hacked into it since i forgot the account even existed lol.

    That is a phishing email.  The sender hopes that you will click on a link that will take you to what looks like the wow website and hope you enter your account information there.

    Your account is most likely untouched.

     

    Your right lol. I missed it the first time cause i never click links in emails. I went to Blizzards site via google and found my account name/password weren't working so assumed it was genuine. Have to say they are getting better with the phishing emails as this one looks the real deal.

    Even if that's true (and it could be)....a Blizzard Authenticator would have completely blocked them from logging onto your account (even if they DID get your login/pass).





    My account is cancelled. But I have an Authenticator. And I am not worried in the least that my account information could have been released. Because there is absolutely no way they can get in my account (even if they do have my login/pass). I hold the key phisically in my hands!!! Not them, heh. Buy the Authenticator. You will sleep easy.





    P.S. - they day hackers figure out how to hack the Blizzard Authnticator.......THEN I will worry about my account being able to compromise =)

    Yes but it was not hacked.  It was just compromised by an internal Blizzard employee who has access to the database used for login authentication.

    Or possibly it's a conspiracy to get us all to buy Authenticator keyrings, I haven't decided yet lol. :D
