So, I've been very successful at EQ, EVE Online, EQ 2, and I've also played Lineage and AO. I can tell you that the single biggest problem all these games share is that every player is at the mercy of morons.
After three years, I can't take it anymore. My in-game progress is at the mercy of bad gamers. When I say bad gamers, I mean people who can't go 10 minutes without getting everybody killed. Those, flamers and assholes. I asked "How can I back the camera off my character in 3rd person?" tonight in the n00b channel in AO and got flamed for it. I can't get a group in EQ 2 that can get EXP and not debt. EQ Live was nerfed to the point that there was no such thing as progress -- 90% of the people who were level 60+ were still broke. EVE was fine, except the "warp" time sink was too friggin obvious. When it takes you 30 minutes to get anywhere useful in a game, your money is being stolen.
I'm not paying $18/month to hang out with a bunch of ignorant monkies anymore. To me, ass hats aren't fun and, unfortunately, playing with the public at large means playing with a lot of morons and jerks. And it offends my notion of equity that my fortunes have to be tied to idiots to "progress."
When you combine that with all the time sinks and "grinding" that are built into these games, it's all a con. The people who develop these games are too stupid/lazy/unmotivated to produce games that rely on content and questing to progress, so they make them depend on The Grind. Somehow, people are dumb enough to, literally, buy into this. When I see a level 50 artisan in EQ 2 now, I don't think "That guy's awesome." I think "That guy either has a great macro, or he's a lifeless loser."
Here in about 10 years, when all these droolers are smart enough to quit paying for grindage and start forcing these companies to make games with content, I might get back into it. Until then, I'm only playing games that have privately administered servers and can boot the morons. As snotty as it sounds, the general public is a pack of imbesciles and I'm not paying money to experience their stupidity any further than I can get it for free on a walk to the grocery.

Welcome to life.
well its true, like 90 percent of the people are assholes, and its really hrd to find decent ppl. i guess dats one of the other reasons ppl play private servers ( besides the fact theyre free)... but still
join a decent guild in the game and if the guild is anything a guild is supposed to be, then u shud enjoy the game. if u still dont, then ur in the wrong guild.
btw i didnt take ur poll only cuz i cant choose multiple answers...
if you are bored of roleplay but you like mmopg´s try out ww2online, average age is much more mature and good teamplay
I would have to say I agree with you, for the most part, I haven't played Eve Online or Lineage, but as for the other games you mentioned, yes definately a large portion of the players are total morons. But I think the problem is that these games are designed for morons. All of these games are dumbed down to the point where idiots can quite easily reach the highest level and gain the best equipment. The games don't really provide any challenge apart from time consumption. Idiots will see a new more powerful weapon as 'uber' and being a higher level than someone else they will consider themselves 'leet'. They can be perfectly entertained by new 'content' which is basically the same thing as the rest of the game but instead of fighting trolls they're fighting frost giants. When they get their new 'uber' weapon they will be thrilled, and pronounce their 'leetness' to everyone they meet.
Not to say that all of the people playing these games are idiots. Many of them play for the social aspects, or for new experiences. Even simple games like these can become enjoyable when you meet the right person.
The game design needs to be more challenging, more complicated, players need more freedom, more options, more everything. Get rid of all the hand holding and let the players shape the world in their own image. Thats where the idiots will struggle, and run back to their 'safe' games, while the rest of us will shine.

The Psychologist says the cup is your mother. The Punk Kid also says the cup is your mother. The Cricket Player says his cup is definately full. Everyone knows that Pamela Andersons cups are full. The Defendant says it was like that when he found it. Me, I just ask the waitress for a refill.

You're actually making a few separate arguments. All of which I agree with.
Yes, bad gamers are indeed a waste of time. It's hard to find good, trustworthy questing companions.
Agreed.
Both equally annoying but really you're bashing the game developers here. Different issue. But I agree, nonetheless. These are all good points but the problem is, there seems to be no way around it. Game developers aren't perfect and, just as in the real world, 90% of people are indeed assholes. There's no way around it. Still, I find a way to enjoy my MMORPG experience, but sometimes I do wonder why I pay for it.
Content based MMORPGs. Wouldn't that be nice... but game devs would be hard pressed to come up with enough quests to make the experience dynamic enough. However, it is possible and I'd love to see it happen someday.

i agree with bryan
I could not have said it better myself.
Here is a tip, This is how I got away from the world of idiots.
Permanent party. Find a group of friends, agree on a set play schedual and only group with them. It eliminates the idiot factor.
I have not grouped with a random pickup group in a good 2+ years now. I hear of people complaining about never being out of debt in eq2, and true I think the shared debt is the lamest thing ever implemented in a game, outside Wow's no penalty at all, But I think, "Quit grouping with Idiots and you wont have Debt" Now I think personal debt for your own actions is fine, honestly I liked it in eq and ffxi better where you took a real penalty, honestly debt incurred by yourself on one death is insignificant, I like the system where if someone was truly stupid they would not achieve the next level. Now the Debt system slows it down to painful speeds, but they can still grind through it.
Anyhow back to my point. Find a group or 2 of good players to consistantly play with. It will change your gameplay experience, And on the times you need to pick up an outside player for your group, the second they show any indiciation of stupidity, Boot em. Who cares what they think of you, in the end They wont get in the upper levels unless people stupidly allow them to sponge off them.
What I find most amusing is that when you post a topic like this, you'll always get a ton of people responding with "I Agree!". If everyone is responding with "I Agree!", where are the morons? Why aren't they posting on this thread defending their moron selves?
Makes you think... Maybe at one point or another, we're all morons.
Youll always get ppl who, somehow, managed to get very high lvl without having ANY clue wat theyre doing. Its sad, but its true.
Its even sadder when these ppl pretend theyre pro, when it was obviously some kind of freak accident that helped them get to higher lvl.
BUT, on the other hand, theres good players who get tired, fall asleep at their keyboard, or just mess up sometimes. So if youve only partied with a person once, they mess up once, then you have no right to call them a moron. But if they mess up repeatedly, then moron they are!
Ive been a victim to playing so many hours that I fell asleep. I did get my whole party killed cuz of it. I apologized, looked for someone to replace me, n logged out for a good 18 hour sleep. Im sure they all hated me. But at least I didnt get them killed twice, right? :X
Its really hard for me to find a perma-party in games. Im crafter first, money maker second, cute boy chaser third, and lastly, combat lvler. Most ppl that play MMOs are combat lvler first, so if they play as much as me, theyll be way higher lvl.. So theres no way for me to be in a perma-party with those kinds. :S
Well said. I guess they never came across a moron in real life so seeing one in a game is surprising to them.

Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
Very true
If you find a good guild then you can turn off general chat and just talk to guild members
That's why MMORPG developers added the nice useful command known as /ignore or /addignore depending on the MMORPG you are playing.
And if you are bothered by the caps for your Ignore list, try deleting everyone in your ignore list every 2 weeks or so. You'll notice that more than half the people you ignored are not as present in the game as they used to be! Most likely cause they got banned for being anoying or everyone ignored them so they switched servers. or they learned their lesson and actually passed puberty in less than 2 weeks!
Ahhhh! I love the /ignore command! My favorite command in any MMORPG.

Most annoying peoples are like this, they start to flame you for a stupid reason.
Heres a example:
Lotharr: Hahaha, I owned you in PvP!
Jerkie67: STFU ASSHOLE
Lotharr: I didnt ment that thing bad way.
Jerkie67: Fuck you, I have told now to Public-, Clan- and Area chat that you are a troll.
Lotharr: Why did you do that, lol.
Jerkie67: Dont say nothig or I kill you.
Lotharr: lol
Jerkie67: Welcome to ingore, looser
Lotharr: Well Well....?
Jerkie67: Lallalallalaaa, Did my job for this day.
Lotharr: Rofl
The real show-stopper came for me about 3 weeks ago in EQ 2. I'd always heard stories about people like this -- I'd never actually witnessed one. If you read this, you'll think I'm lying. It's like the combination of every bad player I've ever met, wrapped into one infected sausage.
I was playing my little level 15 alt and this summoner comes along who needs help so we group him. He gets us killed as soon as he hits /accept -- pulling 5 red mobs. We tell him we need more people in group to handle his mobs so he asks "Are we going to kill them yet?" every two minutes until we get some help. I tell him to shut up, and he's like "Dude, I'm a level higher than you are, why do you think you know so much?" Then, I swear to God: He starts telling us about his Alienware computer. Then, he explains how "My bro got to level 50 in two weeks." THEN, he gets us killed again and I /boot him from group. THEN he stands there going on and on about how I'm a jerk and can we please group him up again.
I have a theory on EQ 2. There were idiots in EQ Live. But they made EQ 2 easier to play. Let's say it's only attracted 2% more idiots than Live did. Well, idiots are pretty noticeable. They're generally loud, stupid and getting everybody either killed or pissed off. So an increase of 2% can make a game seem laden with idiots. And I have to say, EQ 2 seems like the overflowing idiot gutter.

After reading bpharris9014 post, I thought of something. Why doesn't someone come up with a third party application which can be run in a MMORPG which can connect to a "references" server. People can they rate other players like on eBay. When a player get's a bunch of negative ratings, people will know not to group with them.
Yes, you do have the anonymity of being able to just roll a new character, but at the lower levels, the deaths are not as impacting as at the later levels. And how many people are going to level a character for 25+ levels just to delete them and start over to get a new name?
Hell, if SOE or a game company incorporates this into the game, they can tie it to the users account and you'll be able to eliminate all of their characters based on the one.
Absurdly exploitable. It would become a griefing tool. Terrible idea.
I've experienced what you just described in every MMOG I've played, including EVE and ATITD which are both heralded as "mature" games. This has nothing to do with the game itself...it's just human nature.
You should have tossed his ass the second he pulled those 5 mobs. Keeping a moron in your group is more a measure of your own obstinancy.

AUG! I've one to many expierieces like that--- from SWG to UO, to WoW.
Example. I was grinding up to master brawler on one of my SWG characters a few months ago on a spawn of meatlumps, (before I quit) and this idiot rolls up on his speeder, gets off, and says something to the effect of: "Dude, can you leave? i was grinding here an hour ago and i gotta get up my skill tree"
Well obviosly, i wasnt about to leave, so I bascally told him to buzz off. Kindly, politely, mind you, but to buzz off nonetheless. Well, he refuses to leave and starts taking kills from me. Obviously, he has every right ot kill what im killing, but it goes against all MMORPG etiquete. So i told him how rude he was being and that he should leave. Well, he begins to freak out at me, and threatens to report me to a dev for swearing, (something i did NOT do, but which he did, I have a screenshot for evidence). Eventually a fellow guildmember drove by and noticed my dilemma, and together, we managed to get himt o leave.
But, in fact, that is a small minority of my exp. in SWG. Most of the people I met on Bria (My server) for the year and a half i played were VERY nice, helpful, and generally cool people. I hardly ever met people like the one mentioned above. People do act like asses, but find a good server, and you can find good people.
All games have their share of idiots, maybe some more than others. But... I do find it funny you post about morons, go read the threads around these forums and it should confirm your thoughts.
People talk about EQ2 having ignorant players, but WoW attracts the worst I have seen yet. I believe it was with the low system requirements, its successful theme and an open beta to create such a "gr8 comunitE".
the thing about any mmorpg i just cant stand... beyond anything else... is when people dont even try to do something and start asking about how to do it... honestly!!! i just want to fly across the world to where they are and blow thier brains out!!! i rarely ever ask a question unless its a extremely hard thing to find out.
for instance i cant stand people who ask... what drops so and so... and where do you learn skills... wheres the potion lady!! just look around!!!! its not that hard! i can understand if there isnt that npc in the town and ill answer to that beside that... it just makes me regret playing since all you do is play with people who are too lazy to even find things out on thier own...
omg.. i know how u feel man, i feel like dat everytime i play too. somethin like this happend be4:
where do u buy armor?
at town
wheres the town?
above you
which way is that?
go straight
then what?
then theres ur f**ken armor shop... get the hell away from me newb! go visit the site and read some info in it
wtf b*tch all i wanna know is where the hell the armor shop is.
then he would start attacking me and then i killed him... then he would start whisperin how much of an ass i was... where as then i told him the armor shop should be rite in front of him.
u might not be able to blow their brains, but if they piss you off alot, pk them. then wen they spawn, stalk them and pk them again... its a stress reliever
some games dont have pvp everywhere.. mmorpgs have lost thier way with these idiots...
isnt the point of a mmorpg... to explore and get into the game? seriously... look around... you dont have to know where things are.. go find em... go have a "quest"
