Day 1 of Darkfall: Assessments and Questions

EldaerEldaer Member Posts: 21

So my original post of "Why I'm sold on Darkfall" exploded. I was going to post updates there but it looks like another thread is in order. I wanted to share with everyone my first impressions, first experiences and initial questions from my first night of Darkfall.

First Impressions:

I'm a human in Monkfield. The world is what I expected it to be. The graphics aren't spectacular, but I never played EQ for the graphics so it wasn't anything to be concerned about. Getting in before the big model updates will make me appreciate the update even more so I'm happy I got in now. The interface is interesting, and it will take me awhile to get used to the FPS feel of the game after unsheathing my sword. It's definitely different, but not in a bad way. A nice change from the norm. I do wish NPC's with quests were marked somehow. Maybe not an annoying big bright yellow !, but at least something to send me on my way and give me a little direction. But the earth tones and overall graphics are pretty nice. While running I saw my shadow! Haha, it was fantastic. I kept chasing it like an innocent kid, and the full immersion was already setting in.

First Experiences:

The starting goblin camp seemed to be a little slow on the respawns, it took me awhile to kill just 4 goblins for my first quest. Later on the camp cleared out with other players and I found myself overwhelmed with goblins, so perhaps the spawn rate is fine where its at! I was griefed twice about an hour in by evil faction people in what appeared to be in full plate. They took my 2 handed sword I had just purchased. I was upset for a couple minutes, followed by an excitement that I too could do this to others in the near future. Although I don't think I was screaming "HI IM NEW LOLOLOL," the griefers pretty much gave me the cold, harsh and unforgiving welcome to the game I was expecting. The bank and I have a very strong bond, and I'm only 4 hours in. I then proceeded to die again a little later on to 3 goblins, and my grave was looted immediately by other humans. *Sad face*

An alfar named Boba Fett came to the camp and attacked me and killed me. A human player nearby ressurected me and I was elated. I didn't lose anything! So I returned the favor, killing Boba Fett with a barrage of mana missles. As I fumbled around trying to figure out how to deliver a killing blow and steal all his loot, the human player that ressurected me had ressurected him! Oh cruel fate, why must I be betrayed by my fellow human? I attempted to attack Boba Fett again as he ran for the hills. Little did I know that he was luring me to a guard tower. It was my (poor) assumption that MY CITY'S guard tower would protect me regardless if I was the agressor against an Alfar. I was wrong. Blue lasers tore me down, and Boba Fett laughed as he stole my sword, armor, gold and reagents. I will say this to other new players -- when this game deals you a cruel hand, LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. As much as it sucks to lose my gear three times already, banking often and simply learning from mistakes is key. I never thought Id have so much fun in a game after losing all my gear repeatedly so early on. I believe this game may not be for everyone.

Initial Questions:

I keep  losing my 2handed sword to deaths. I'm contemplating sticking with 1handed because they consistently drop off of goblins. I heard kobolds drop 2 handers later on, at which point I'm thinking of switching my focus back. Will my lack of skill level make this strategy not work?

My lesser magic is already at 30. Should I be working up archery at the same time, or is it safe to focus on magic for the time being?

If Monkfield is too busy the next time I log in, where is a quieter starting area within running distance I could go to?

Why does my guard tower protect the damn Alfar?! Haha.

I'm in the clan NEW, but feel like there might be a better clan out there to lend a helping hand. They answer questions and everything great, but sometimes there are simply too many questions flying and the leaders seem overwhelemed.  I have over 10 years of MMO experience, so catching on and adapting my playstyle will come quickly. Anyone interested in a Darkfall newbie, MMO veteran? :D

EDIT: I forgot an important question! Is there a way to auto-loot a grave or to expedite the process? Dragging and clicking 3-6 items everytime I kill something will get annoying fast. Any simple tips that I am unaware of?

That's it for now!

1 Handed weapons really are not good for fighting other plays toe-to-toe on foot.   The only situation where 1-handeed weapons shine is when you are fighting from the back of your mount, which can only be done with 1 handed weapons.   Having a high 1 handed skill and nailing someone with a mount can cause major damage.  For most situations though, pick a 2-handed weapon of your choosing and work it up for melee PvP.

Archery is great way to start doing serious damage.  Archery is one of the easier combat skills to level IMO, and is good for mid-rage PvP situations.  Archery is also a good tool for a lot of the medium difficulty mobs in the game.  A lot of the starter mobs drop arrows, and learning how to make your own is a good investment for a tradeskill.  Shooting your bow raises your Dex, but also your Vitality which increases your max HP.

It is always good to focus on magic.  I'd recommend you watch the "advanced character development" videos that were spotlighted.  They really help show you a good way get yourself established and gain some of the key skills.

Try to not get discouraged, the first day is always the hardest day.

If you can afford it stich with the 2h sword, if not do the 1h sword. I think it's a question of economics.

I'd do a little archery at the sametime, everyone will need it sooner or later.

As to the guard tower hitting you, was it a human NPC city or was it a player owned city? If NPC then either it was an Alfar city or if friendly you were red/rogue from hitting a fellow human/dwarf/elf player.

If you're on EU-1 send me a PM if you're looking for a clan.

There is no way to legaly auto loot, makes looting a tactical decision.

    Nice read, keep posting.

Welcome to Darkfall, I am still a newb but I can help with a couple of your questions.

Here is an interactive map that will help you get around:  http://www.dfatlas.com/map.aspx

    Losing your Greatword:

You can swap you newbie weapon at the Merchant for 20 gold and pick a newbie Greatsword that will spawn with you after death.

Kobolds are not much tougher than Goblin scouts and if you check the map there shoulld be some near Monkfield,  they will drop two haded swords, bows, arrows and assorted potions.    If you kill a few can easily fill you bank with two handed swords.

Training Great Sword, Magic, One handed and Archery:   It is bad to train everything and it very common to switch between the various combat styles while in battle.    It will take longer to train up all things at once so you may want to focus on Magic  ( Heals and Range damage )  and Greatsword or Sword and Shield so you can unlock you power attacks quicker.

If Monkfield is too busy:   If you use the map inthe link above you will see the other NPC cities int he Human lands and most of them are fine for starting characters and will have goblins and kobolds to play with.

Human Guard towers helping and Alfar:

The tower should not have helped the Alfar,  maybe during the combat another Human joined in to help and your attack against the Alfar hit them as well.  All Melee attacks will slahs any target / targets the sword hits,  so when in close quarters with other Humas becareful because a stray hit can make you as a Rogue and then the towers will attack you.

    Guilds:

Check out the Offical Darkfall forums for the NA server, there are lots of posting about guilds recruiting and you may want to stick it out with NEW for a bit.  I hear they are a good guild to help get your feet wet in Darkfall.

Bank everything you have, and head to Sandbrook, maybe. I find it to be a lot quieter for the most part.
Why does my guard tower protect the damn Alfar?! Haha.
Are you SURE it was an alfar, and not an elf? Did you accidentally hit the other human when killing the "Alfar" and go grey??

No, there isn't. "get used to it" is the best advice I can give. It's that way for a reason, and you may find situations where you are glad it is (when it's YOU they're looting, for example). It gets easier with time.

@ Wharg0ul : Yea, I'm positive it was an alfar. And I hadn't thought about it before, but it's very possible I accidently swiped the human that ressurected him.

I suppose it depends on what you intend to do weather or not you stick with 1-handed or go with 2-handed.

Me, I'm more focused on getting my harvesting and crafting skills up, particularly so I can do armor/weaponsmithing. That way, it doesn't cost much gold to replace lost weapons, so long as I have the materials harvested, and I'll be able to sell items produced  to train up and don't need to NPC's and gain some money from that. Since that's my focus, I stick to killing with 1-handed weapons when the mood strikes me to do so, and carry one around just for a little self defense when out gathering or working up other crafting skills.

When I've reached the point where I'm satisfied with my crafting skills at that time, I'll start working up 2-handed and other combat skills.

Although, I'm saving all the money that normally goes to combat and magic skills for crafting ones. By using a 1 handed sword ( maybe I'll buy a skill for that, and it will be useful when I get a mount as Paragus said) and continuing to use Magic Missile and self heal, working up those specific skills and lesser magic (Which is really the biggest thing - Doing range damage with no need for reagents or arrows and healing yourself) , it's saving me a ton for when I'm ready to really dig into combat.

And sorry to hear you had such bad luck with being PK'ed. My first day was, thankfully, much more kind to me. Must have been online at an off time or someething!

Set your backpack so that it will automatically come up when you right-click, that will make it faster when looting.

Boba Fett is an elf, so you attacked him and became aligned as rouge (gray color). He was running back to town so that he could escape you and allow you to get shot down by the towers.

    Welcome to Darkfall!

Alfar are purple midgets, sort of skinny umpalumpas with attitude!

    Good day,

About 3 months back I quit wow after 2 years of good fun , I dont know why or what happend but the game lost its appeal all of a sudden. Been playing AION ever since however i dont think i'll last much longer, I thought the game would change once i hit max level but its the same mind numbing grind. The game advertises itself around pvp but reality is quite the opposite.

Anyhow after much contemplation I've decided to pick up Darkfall, it does seem rutheless but i want to give it a shot. Sadly I haven’t been able to convince any of my IRL friends to tag along with me  . the fact that i am starting a new game coupled with not having any friends along is quite daunting. So I’d like some advise about which server to pick, preferrably one which has a healthy volume of beginners, veterans and good action.

P.s. i think i should play on EU realm since i'll be playing from Dubai.

    Regards

Just so you know, there are only 2 servers, period.

    1 for EU

    1 for US

That's your only options. And don't be daunted because you have no IRL friends with you. Clans are often recruiting, and even though you may not know it from the chat channels, there are a lot of good people in the game. They just don't talk much.

Be warned, this is a very different experience and even control/UI from WoW. It'll take some serious getting used to, and it'd be a good thing if you had a thick skin. You'll die and lose a lot often, but don't get discouraged.

    Good luck!
