If you check out the Guild Wars section, there are quite a few discussions on this topic.

But, yes, they had better keep up with it; it's a huge part of their marketing strategy and they will lost a lot of people if they don't.

Guild Wars is NOT free, you buy the game, then you play it as you feel like, there are no monthly subscriptions.

Obviously expansion will come out but no one is forceing you to buy them. Expect 2 to 3 expansions per year, anyone who says they will have a new one every three months is an idiot.

As stated on the Website, the online gaming is free.... I very seriously doubt that there will be a monthly fee, but if there is, I would get it anyway...it is a VERY nice game....peace out!!! image

Of course the expansion packs and the game are going to cost money, but the monthly fee itself, will probably always stay 100% free.image

The whole pay for expansion idea is gay. They should be like Diablo 2 and have chapters, then just download a new one. I hate paying extra money for games, once I reach 55 bucks, over my limit, I can get better entertainment for 50 bucks. If they come out with an expansion I am not buying it, I’ll get Half-life 2 or something. Dont be dumb, its about supply and demand, dont buy stuff you dont want to pay for otherwise this game will end up like the ridiculously expensive EQ II.

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

I am not going to buy an expansion until I finish EVERYTHING in the regular, and for me that may take some time. I am a casual gamer, so I look forward to Guild Wars.

back to the first question for a sec, lets just say in some magical world gw announces their going to have to have montly fees after all, do u kno how many people they would lose? they'd be screwed, the only reason im buying this game is because theres no monthly fee, i mean no offense to gw im not saying its a bad game, its an amazing game but the no monthly fee is like the #1 thing they have going for them. Good Game. Good Graphics. Good That There is No Monthly Fee. :)

Oh yeah. Heaven forbid thatpeople get paid for what they make. I mean that would make all the kiddies have to mow lawns for money or something.

Forget that. You should get free games for life because you RoXXors!!

yes I think guild wars will be completly free of monthly fees because it would be pretty stupid when they would hype it as free and then start asking money when it's released. I wouldn't buy it if the pulled a stunt like that

After playing this weekend in the beta weekend, I thought the game was very nice looking.  Honestly though, I don't consider it a MMOG.   It's more of a multiplayer game...massive? I don't know.

It reminds me a lot of Diablo and Battle.net:

You log into the game, your character is in a match-making room (insert name of town/city).  This is the area that I would label "massive".  There are other players there and you can chat and trade and whatever.  Then, if you go to a quest/mission/zone, you appear to be on a localized version of that zone.  If you group with others, I would guess the leader "hosts" the session.....much like Diablo2.   In Diablo 2 you log into Battle.net, you are in a centralised location, where you can find a game or create one for others to join.

I imagine that is how they can afford not to charge a monthly fee.  Upkeep and bandwidth costs for a "lobby" is a bit different then upkeep/bandwidth for actual game servers hosting gameplay for over 1000 ppl.

I liked it...it's a quick fix to logging in and having some fun.  I'm just not sold on it's title as a MMORPG.

I agree , very good game. character customization a bit shallow. Huge world. Hopefully can keep people busy and interested till expansion where its rumored they will unveil a new player race.

thats because its not - arena.net say as much on their website. Its designed to be fun to play, not to be some sort of all encompassing immersive virtual life. It cuts out a lot of the stuff that MMORPG's have, for better or worse. Almost no travel times, instancing, very little levelling, no non-consentual pvp.

it is a lot like diablo 2 (hardly suprising), except instead of releasing expansions that everyone has to buy to compete (new levels, new items etc.) they are instead releasing expansions that expand on the quests (since they know the two groups they are appealing to are the quest'ers and pvp'ers).

people have such a hang up over names....

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

I didnt have a problem with you till you posted that.

Expansion is whats going to keep this game "alive" and u think that a gaming company is goign to release sheer brilliance and not charge something for even more brillance?

Dude put it this way, if u take a game, for me it would be Asherons Call or maybe for you Everquest II then add the monthly subscriptions for a year and take the expansion pack price x how many are realeased (3 or 4 a year) then u will come out with something a hell of a lot less, and if you dont its because u did it rong, hell ill do it for you below.

    $15 x 12 = $180

$50 x 3 = $150  <----- and its been said they wont even charge that much its in a range from 30 to 50 so then lets do this,

$40 x 3 = $120 <----- well lets say they have more then 3 and will maximum have 5 a year... then ill show u what it will come out to be,

$40 x 5 = $200 <----- so one year after gameplay and CHOOSING to buy all expansions you have came to $20 over for a game 6x better then any game out there today. AND those last prices is for the maximum amount of expansions per year.....

FINAL PRICES AFTER POSSIBLILITIES, you will prolly be payin the same amount because as they say, "it will be competitively priced"

    $15 x 12 (months) = $180

    compared to

    $40 x 4 (expansions per year) = $160

Exactly. Your logic is undeniable. Not only that but you dont have a recurring bill. Nobody likes recurring bills esp. for something like entertainment. Finally a team that understands this . I'd rather own it then rent it

I will surely pay for a GW box, maybe some expansion packs, but not more. I can't afford it if they will start with monthly fees.

I think it's great that you will have to buy the game. That's a very BIG credit to ArenaNet, and that money we are spending on the game will they use to make upgrades ingame with maybe better working materials etc etc.

As someone said before me, Expansion packs is great, it keeps the game "alive"! But the best think with this game (compare to WoW) you don't have to play 10-20hours each day to be one of the best characters in game...

Well, i can tell this much:

    - GuildWars Costs $50, NO Exceptions
    - NO Monthly Fee
    - U get when u buy the game, ....(how do i explain this ::::21:: ).... ok, u get like....Chapter 1 for an example.
Later on u can buy Chapter 2, 3, 4 whenever u like, its not that when chapter 2 is released u have 2 buy it 2 be able 2 play the game, so u can also stick just 2 chapter 1 :) , ofcourse this is just an example, but pretty close 2 how it will be :D .
    - And I am Convinced that it will EXPLOSIVELY overrun EQII, in Sells
