So I've got a pretty powerful notebook, but a friend of mine is selling his PS3 for cheap, and I have an HDTV. I want to play the game on the PS3, but would love to have the option of going "mobile" with the game (travelling, change of scenery, etc). Anyone have a guess as to whether you'll need a serial key to play on the PC?
It'd be so nice to be able to buy it solely on the PS3 and then download the client. Of course, this is all to save $60, which for this game IMO isn't a big deal.
Has there been any fact/rumor about this?

Nope no announcement for it yet. Your most likely going to have to wait til it is released and find out from people who intend to play on both platforms. I hope you could just dl the client and play if you already play on PS3 because that is what I plan on doing, playing on both platforms. I don't mind paying for both though if it comes down to it.
Actually they said that all platforms and nations share servers similar to FFXI. I am sure the same account will work on both platforms.
He's not actually talking about that. He means if he gets the PS3 version and then gets the PC version via DL can he install/play the PC version without a serial. That way he can play on both platforms but only pay for one disc.
Ohhh I see. Probably not at launch. I am sure you'd have to buy both.
I'm almost 100% sure that you will have to buy 2 copies of the game(PC and PS3) but will only have to pay for ONE account. It'd be stupid as hell if done any other way. I would be fuming....
Edited, nevermind. Thought you meant use the same account owning two games. Whoops.
The question is:
One Account, two Platforms?
The Answer:
Yes, although nothing is official.
Well, ya, I assumed you'd be able to play the same account on both, but just having to purchase two copies seems silly to me, but I wouldn't be surprised.
How does it work for FFXI? I only played FFXI on the PC and never ventured into the PS2.
Most MMOs don't even need a serial to install. The serial is used at account creation. Knowing this, you can download or borrow the disk for the PC version and play away using your PS3 account.

I'm pretty sure you can buy the PS3 version, download the PC version and use the PC3 key on the PC.
Why..? My brother has both the PC and XBox 360 version of FFXI, and plays his PC account (which he has since launch) on the XBox 360 as well. I doubt SquareEnix will change this policy with FFXIV...
Next problem is where to download the PC version "legally"... ;-)
Ahh so that's what you meant, wow, never thought of that. I guess you'd have to buy the PS3 version, and hope that a friend bought the PC version and borrow it from him/her.
Downloading a torrent of the game in this case is perfectly legal. You've already paid for your license to play the game, which is what MMOs that are in no way single player games sell. Being allowed to move from one console to another on account, when you already own the rights to play it, is in no way illegal.
Same goes for downloading a game that you already own and have scratched the disk. You've already got your license to play the game, so downloading it is essentially using a backup copy of the cd.

First: Sorry for my bad english.
Second: I have played FFXI and i have to say that you didn't need the serial to install the game at PC. You only need the serial to make the POL account and the others serials (expansions) to add content ID into your POL account. So, maybe they do that this time too. If you bought 1 copy and make an account with the serial it may be possible to you to play on both platforms with the same account. I hope so because i wanna buy a PS3 on the near future and wanna play sometimes on PC and others on PS3
Well Sony gets a cut of games sold so you definitely can't buy a PC version and then have it work on PS3. It will definitely be seperate for now and probably always.
In all past (mmorpg) games I have played the serial isn't registered to the game that you buy nor is it registered to the console "PC or system" you own but rather to a created online account. In SE's case your POS (is this what it is called?) account. As long as you have the client installed on the pc, or the client disk running within your game system then you are fine and dandy.
The client log's in refering to your account information stored in the companies' servers. All your characters, information, EVERYTHING is stored within their servers so it really shouldn't matter which system you play with once you have an account.
THE PROBLEM like previously stated is attaining the client. WHICH for most PC based mmorpgs is readily available usually from the developers themselves.
How many PC games do you know of that can run on console? Sony or otherwise?

^^ lol. Anyways id say grab the PS3 version and it will be very LIKELY that you could barrow/DL the PC version and play it from there. It worked like that on FFXI, and i don't really see it changing. The fact that almost no other MMO besides FFXI is multiplatform mean you cant say offically that they work that way, so your only real example is FFXI.
IF this is not the case and you need to buy both, buy the PS3, deal with it for a while and after a short time most MMO's retail price drops quite a bit. And int he end if you enjoy the game that much you will likely not mind paying the extra 50$ for a PC version, but in all likely-hood it will be just like FFXI
Well if you can. You will still need to purchase your PC and your 360 hard copy. But you will log into the server through the same Playonline account. .......at least that's my guess.
LOTRO, GW, FFXI, RS, EVE, AION, AOC, WHO, FE,
You will more than likely need a physical disc in drive to play on the PS3, just as if you were playing FFXI on a 360 (and I assume a PS2/3). You will need to buy the client for both platforms unfortunately unless SE decides that a single purchases gets both types of software, which I'd doubt since they would be losing potentially half their profits from disc sales.
It is noteworthy, however, that you can buy registration codes for FFXI without buying the box or downloading the client. I personally have never tried since they didn't give you the ability to buy the code until a few months after the software was out (by which time I already had it). With this and the way they were able to do the distribution for the non-retail expansions they could ... COULD ... choose to have it where you are buying the registration codes and not having any brick-and-mortar expansions. This would bind the code to the account and that would unlock the access for you. Even with the cross platform playability they might do it that way and in that case the base software would be moot and thus free to download (thus you couldn't necessarily pirate because you can't pirate something that is free if you barrow from a friend to install on your box).
It would be the equivalent of lets say Fallout 3 for PC where you get the software for free and can install it on any number of machines at once, but you have to log into a Bethesda server to enter the game and only one connection could be made at one time. The fall back would be of course that you would need a persistent connection to keep playing. Sucks for an offline game, but for an MMO it is expected. Something like this might actually work well now that I think about it. I am just not entirely sure how it would work with the PSN (I'd assume you could upgrade directly from the PSN in the future).
I only needed the disk for installation on PS2, everything was read off of the HD when playing FFXI.
I played FFXI on PS2 and PC. You'll need to buy two copies (one for console, one for PC) but you'll be able to use the same account. Hopefully SE does the same with FFXIV.
