So I might give this game the chance it deserves, but in a siege or a large battle, if I was a little behind most players due to lack of time being able to play, could I have a role in the battle that could make a substantial difference? I always like being a factor for PvP. I am not expecting 1v1 victories so cross that out. Do you think I would have fun?

I think you will have a blast.
If you don't have the time to grind skills then avoid this game, it's a great game when you can compete, but when you can't you end up being useless. If you have 6+ hours a day to play then by all means. I loved the game when I played it... just no longer had the time to keep up with people so gave it up

It sounds like DF would be quite entertaining for you.
There are various ways you could assist in a large engagement, regardless of how developed you are:
(a) Designated Looter.
(b) Reviving Clanmates.
(c) Providing Ranged Support (By means of Archery or Magic)
(d) Healing Clanmates / ClanMounts
This is just a small list of suggestions, there are many other ways you can be a factor in the battle, and help ensure victory for your Clan/Alliance.
You do not need to play 6+ hours a day by any means, the above poster is mistaken. It is a common misconception that new players are useless, which is far from the case.
Don't listen to this guy. I'm a casual player that plays at most 2 hours a day. I have a blast. I support my pvp group plenty fine with my focus on archery.

I've played the game since BETA and during EU - 1 and on NA -1. I've experienced the game evolve from the beginning and I stand by the fact if you do not have roughly 6 hours a day to play you will not get a full experience from this game for a very, very long time. Yes skills level up fast now, but stats still take forever and mean a lot in pvp.
I mainly quit because I was tired of having to grind so much to keep up or play catch up with EU transfers. A game that was meant to be player skill based turned into a regular in-game skill based system. Yes there is a lot of player skill, but not enough to merit it different from other pvp mmos beyond the FPS style.
I never said he would be useless, but playing for less than 2 hours a day means you will progress so slow that you'll soon wonder why you bother. You need to understand I'd spend 6 hours just prepping for a siege then another 4 fighting it. 2 of those hours would often be spent doing nothing but traveling.
Darkfall is an amazing game, but only if you have the time for it. If like me you always want to be in a competitive state you'll need to sink a lot of hours into it. If you're content not really having any role to play then by all means do play, the PVE for the most part is fun, and there may be a few people you can fight around your skill level.

You can always man a cannon on a ship, too.
There's lots of ways to contribute to a PVP group....people who complain about "playing catch up" are just pissy that they can't be a one-man-army, IMO.
There are plenty of ways that you can get involved as a new player. Get with a good guild, who has their own city, and who doesn't mind helping you train.
DFO sieges and large scale raids/battles are unlike anything else, there is no "You're the tank, you're the healer, you're the DPS ect ...". Players are hybrids and can do a bit of everything, you're a newbie so you're not expected to kill 20 guys and tea bag them whilst looting their graves in 3 seconds. You are expected to do what you can and (if you're in a decent clan/alliance) follow orders.
One guy buys the farm during a siege no one even notices, there's so much death and mayhem going on that your death is insignificant. Also no one expects you to live to the end, hell most of the people on both sides don't expect to live untill the end!
Can you take part? Like people have said before, man a cannon on a wall or ship = 50 damage per hit minnimum no matter when you started playing. Helping take down an enemy mount with archery, you can and will make a difference. Helping kill enemies, I don't run in with the first wave because A: I suck, B: I like to film it and C: Everyone else seems to be far more on the ball than I and get there first (GGGRRRRRR!). However I find when you know who the double hard bastards are in the game that if you stick close to them you will live longer and can take their scraps and get some kills (Looking at you Choddy, Xzy and Eman44).
So don't worry about contributing, no one expects anyhting from a new player but appreciates anything you can do. If not then they're probably just arseholes!

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

Hm, if you played that much your stats had to be well above an average player. I can't see any problem to be competitive. But sure if you wanna be the best of the best then yes, you have to play 5-6 hours per day for many months...
You will not be an insta-beast, but if you play smart, you can be effective and make a difference!
