The title is obviously wrong in accordance with many others subscribers, a millon if I remember correctly. The points are weak at best and with a smooth open beta and better pre-release the game will be around for those who seek it.
Yep, spent enough time with this game to know its just plain bad. Spot on OP. Read your post over at STO board. Its impossible to swim through all the Fanboys over there. You really hit a sore spot with alot of them.
Nicely written. You conveyed your points and explained them well. I don't agree with your final decision on the game, but it doesn't mean it's not a good review. I like its simplicity, but I'm not part of the crowd who lies to themselves telling them and others that its one of the best mmo's they've played. It's not. I come from the times of the sandbox MMO, though I fear those days are gone, I'm looking to Swtor to bring in a nice gust of fresh air into the industry. Meanwhile, if any developer out there fancies trying their hands at a more simulation based star trek MMO, I think you'd find a nice following here.

It must be sad to see how rampant trolling and hate spitting effort is turning in vain and the game launches with over 1M accounts. Trolls, you failed :-P
EDIT: Thanks for noticing the typo - accounts, not subs.
People dont hate a game they wanted to love just to hate it. They hate it because its crap and they are disappointed. Its not some huge conspiracy, the game is at best a single player experience, not a very good one either, once people tire of killing the same mobs and scanning the same objects over the first month, in between loading screens, they will leave. And that place will be a ghost town.
great post Elikal . to many game companys feel the need to make gamers buy items that shoudl all ready be ingame . sto might start off with nice costom items . but down the line they will add items that make your ship better and faster . as for life time sub any game that ofers that at start and not after .to me that say they have no faith . if wow gave me a life time sub i would of jump at it . they wont because they know there game as good life spand for now .

MMORPG.com is just another business. We don't pay them - companies who sell MMOs do.
Really? We're back to this old chestnut are we Doubter? Really?
Really. Who pays you? How does this site make money?
If you want the site to be above reproach, you should not be selling ad space for MMORPGs. To claim that there is no conflict of interest is laughable, really.
Ok, well, let me explain to you one more time why what you're inferring isn't the case at all:
MMORPG.com's readers are our number one priority, not the companies that buy our ad space. Even if that wasn't where we all are ethically, it also makes good financial sense. You see, in the real world companies don't pay for good content (yes, scandals have happened in the past, but it's few and far between. In five years working for this site, I've never seen nor heard tell of a bribe of any kind). They don't advertise here as a way of saying thank-you for writing nice things. They advertise here for the same reasons that anyone advertises, anywhere: To reach the largest possible number of people who might be interested in their product. They advertise here because a lot of people read our website.
And that is why, even from a business standpoint, our readers are more important to us than any advertiser is... Because in the end it's not our words the companies are after, it's your eyes on their ads. I honestly don't understand why this is difficult for people to understand... it works the same way in television: the more people viewing a program, the more advertising space is worth. Look at the Superbowl as an example.
So, for us to worry less about our readers and more about our advertisers, we'd really be shooting ourselves in the foot, wouldn't we?
As I wrote - you walk a fine line. People do get suspended for negative comments about certain companies. That is from personal experience. Maybe you are unawre of your mod's actions. I doubt it, but it's possible.
But it's more fun to do the whole conspiracy thing you're alluding to. That's much easier than having any idea at all how the business that you're so readily criticizing actually works. It's much easier to believe that someone not sharing your opinion of something means that there's something dirty going on rather than see that opinions exist beyond your own.
It would be a pretty feeble conspiracy if one admitted to it.
You don't like it, fine. That's entirely your decision but please understand that your opinions are not the only valid opinions and those who don't agree with you are not necessarily involved in some kind of conspiracy or "dirty dealing".
"Not necessarily". Yes, I agree.
Implying that companies don't care about negative press (which is what posts on a forum amount to) is at variance with reality.
I have no financial stake in anything I post here. You cannot claim the same.
Instead of posting the same drivel over and over again you might want to bring out some proof of your claims. Am suprised you haven't been banned because of slander. Unless of course you can show us all how mmorpg.com is getting money to shut people like you up.

You do realize that two very large games, developed by Bioware and published by EA were recently released and successfully might I add? No. I am not a fangirl you can dismiss easily as I have not actually purchased or played either one, but the succesful numbers are there to see. While successful RPGs do not equate to succesful MMORPGs, neither EA or Bioware are automatic fails at this point. Besides, EA's worst traits, their DRM rollercoaster rides, are pretty much mute when it comes to MMORPGs which have a built in DRM by nature of the accounts required to play. I am certainly not sold the SWTOR will be the best ever, not do I believe it will be the worst. I'll be like most patient MMORPG players, sitback and watch and see what unfolds.

EA is just one big bank. I don't see talent coming from them. They see BioWare making a large amount of money and don't want to get involved or alter the winning combination they have. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

Well done sir. Could not agree more. I will never spend one cent on any Cryptic products. BTW, I am also an STO forum user, so please count me out (999,999 left).
Same for me so that leaves 999,998. Id rather go flush my money down the toilet then support Cryptic and their sh*tty business practice.
I agree with all of the OP's points except for the thread title. Unfortunately it is exactly what the community wants, because the community has changed from folks who like deep, involving virtual world games to folks who like fast-paced instant gratification. I don't fault Cryptic for going after this demographic, they're out to make a buck. It's just a shame that big IP's like ST aren't given a deeper treatment.
Exactly, I totally agree. I am drawn to mmorpgs with depth and complexity, even at a much higher difficulty level to learn and master, but I understand how mmos are changing and I cannot find much fault in mmos that cater to a different type of playerbase. I do play games like Guild Wars sometimes, and although it isn't really my cup of tea, it isn't bad by any means. I may give STO a try, but I get the feeling I won't be staying very long
I'm very disappointed when Blizz announce that SC 2 will come in 3 packs. that's when, for me, the gaming industry starts to go downhill.
And now it have infiltrate into this genre, i'm devastated.
If Cryptic is allow to get away with this, than we can indeed kiss goodbye to everything that we love, everything that we hold so dear in MMORPG.
This maybe useless, but i truly urge all gamers, to say no to this kind of unethical business practices, even though you may like the game, YES, even though you may like this game but i urge you to stop supporting Cryptic, because of their business practice.
If not, all of us will suffer, from now onwards...
I'm just gonna say that I find it suspicious that the editor-in-chief of this site feels the need to constant try to quash rumours that this site is bought and paid for by MMO companies. He seems to do it all the time. "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Then again, I'm a suspicious and cynical guy and I don't believe anything really.
I think it's more along the lines of: If you were doing your job and were constantly accused of unethical behavior you weren't participating in. I'm guessing you'd probably say or do something about it. Am I wrong?
