I'm a returning player myself, and here's what I noticed:
Unless you have a friends or a kin in-game it will largely be solo play. It's only natural nearly 3 years after release. Other older MMO's are the same way.

been thinking about giving it another try also. my computer was crap when this first came out. i've since upgraded to a new rig. still debating it though.
No harm in downloading the trial. Ultimately, you're the only judge that matters.

If you were missing world PvP: no they haven't added that and they won't.
If you were missing a threat meter: no they haven't added that and they won't.
If you hate hobbits: no they haven't been removed from the game.
But they changed quite a lot; it depends on what you didn't like at launch.

I missed some Murlocs in there.
No, it's a long time ago but i think i found the game linear and the quests uninteresting. I enjoy lots of freedom and lots of itemization, crafting etc. and soloplay as well as groupcontent.

There is currently more than enough content to level from 1 to 65 on completely separate paths (except for a short period aroundlevels 10 to 15 that for some reason has to be done in Breeland).
To really enjoy the game, I recommend reading the quest texts: they usually tell a very enjoyable story.
Well, there is plenty to do, I think.
If you really, really want to have fun (unless you hate tanking), get the Mines of Moria box as well and try the Warden as class: they are incredibly flexible and different (they have to be "programmed").

Of course this isnt true. Doing all quests in shire or ered luin will get you to level 15-16 and can easily skip bree-land and head to lone-lands which starts at level 15.
And to your previous post. Why would you need a threat meter?
Anyway, the game is still charming for leveling between 1-50, then it goes rapidly downhill. Skirmishes are silly solo-instances that pulls players from persistent world, so it seems it's even more emptier than it already is. Crafting is still uninteresting with no customization, and the whole end-game is consisted of one raid and grinding legendaries (which is probably the most unsuccessful implementation of a good idea I ever witnessed.
But don't worry. The game will turn into F2P with microtransactions very soon. The lifetime model can't sustain the game for too long. Based on various polls on the official forums, it seems there's over 60% lifetimers among the playerbase - hence free players.
REALITY CHECK
Hmm what would the microtransactions entail? It's not buying gear is it?

Skirmishes, premium zones, premium classes, character slots, radiance gear, gating content...
All the recently content added indicates and supports this plan. Every zone they added since Moria (including Moria) is separated by a loading screen (Moria, Lorien, Mirkwood), they added skirmishes - instanced scripted places (can be sold separately), all raids are now radiance-gear dependant (to be easily sold separately), they already made players to pay additional cash for more character slots, and if there's already over 60% lifetimers (already free-to play players), why not to make it all free to play with microtransaction for paying for each additional, premium content? They did it with DDo afterall.
REALITY CHECK
Lol i don't know but it sounds lame for the ppl who bought this lifetime membership.

Link(s) to support this? Or is it pure dubious speculation on your part? LoTRO has a very healthy subscription base at this time.

He cant, Thillian is just like that... Making LotrO F2P (like DDO) would be the most stupid thing Turbine could do with the game. Why would they take the cance when LotrO is one of the most sucesfull MMOs with a VERY dedicated fanbase.
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
If LoTRO were to go F2P, the lifetime subbers would not be effected. If you look at what Turbine did with DDO, you can have a subscription and not have to pay for anything additional.
Honestly, I know this is all speculation, but I would jump on LoTRO if it were to become F2P. I played at launch and it was enjoyable, but not so much so that I wanted to sub. With a F2P model, I would play again and purchase whatever content I wanted.

I concur my friend. It would make absolutely no sense at this time or the near future for Turbine to do this.
Up until this point I thought your opinion was fair enough.. but this is pure nonsense. You are seriously weighing a 'player' poll on forums where it has been established that the vast majority of players do not visit?
And then the lifetime garbage you go on about.... that they are free players. They have offered this since launch. The most you can say about this is that the people who bought it at launch may now be paying way less per month than those that didn't. I bought mine year and a half ago and during that time have stopped playing for months at a time. If I was paying monthly I would have cancelled until such time as I wanted to play again. This means my monthly rate for the time I have played is STILL higher than those paying the normal monthly rate. Do you actually think about this drivel you are spouting, or simply repeat what others say?
Simply because they can't pay with the small amount of monthly subscriber to developers (man hours) to add free content. They might throw in a paid expansion with very small content (one zone and a couple of instances - SoM + with additional microtransactions like 2 more character slots or shared banking storage --- which they already did).
Lotro is for majority of its playerbase like a Guild Wars. They paid fixed price early on, and now they keep paying for paid expansions and additional micro-bags what I just mentioned. As we know, Guild Wars was not getting free content updates, only paid expansions. This is where Lotro is slowly heading to. 2009 was very quiet year for Lotro's free content. One raid, 3 instances and a small Lorien area (indeed - separated by loading screen) which was planned to be ready in 2008 and shipped with Moria expansion.
And don't get me wrong, I believe this would be the best thing for Lotro right now. The servers are nearly dead (EU). The poll on forums that show 65% of the playerbase are already lifetimers is not alone. I made a similiar poll in my own kinship 2 years ago, that revealed over 50% lifetimers. Honvik - leader of Element Zero one of the largest kinships made a similiar poll - and again, it showed over 50% lifetimers.
All the recent changes do support this idea - of going F2P. Skirmishes are separated small instanced areas - to be easily sold separately. All recently added zones are separated by loading screen (Lothlorien, Mirkwood, Moria), there is radiance system (which can be enhanced with premium packages), there are the crafting instances (to be sold separately), and as we all know, they are already offering microtransactions such as - additional character slots or shared banking storage.

lol... As I suspected pure BS speculation on your part. And pulling numbers out of your ass like they actually mean something, Please.
Look I'm all for someone speaking their mind, but the rhetoric you're spewing out is a joke.
Take your own advise like your signature says and take a "Reality Check"...

Your insults don't mean much to me. People use forum to express their opinions, assumptions and in a way speculations. Indeed, I have no hard evidence for this. That's why I said they are all just indications.
I did not pull a simple number out of my ass as you said it. I used the numbers from three different polls and I can give you a link for all of them. That is hard evidence. The fact that the sample might not be the exact representation of the community is an assumption. It is actually you, who is assuming something against the hard evidence.
I was saying the same before DDo turned into F2P, and I had to go through the same kind of ignorance and stupidity from the likes of you.
REALITY CHECK
This game should have won the 'most improved game' award tbh.
I too was underwhelmed by it at release, but now it has so much more.
Monster play hasnt changed much, but thats a good thing because I still find Monster play the most fun and addictive PvP Ive played in any game
My recommendation is to wait for the next welcome back weekend. They happen a lot almost once a month it seems.
Pretty awesome. Only game I rate at the min. Waiting for GW2 though.
Playing tunes in the Prancing Pony and smoking weed, RP, slaying Orcs and a little PVP stuff. Y'know, it's fun.

Are you serious? Insult you how? Toughen up champ.
Anyway, player polls mean squat when it comes to an actual business model (i.e. LoTRO going f2p), and if think otherwise you're just being naive. Most of the time it's disgruntled player shouting out. People who are enjoying the game are doing just that, enjoying the game and are not involved in silly player based "polls". And comparing DDO(before going f2p) with LoTRO in regards to subscription bases is ridiculous. So lets not talk about "ignorance and stupidity" shall we.
So like I said before follow your signature and please do a "Reality Check"...
Maybe it should be of help to a reader when opinions, assumptions and speculations aren't presented as almost certain facts. I was able to recognize your speculations as such, but I can very well imagine people could have missed the subtie indicators.
Opinion: Polls aren't hard evidence. They never are. No matter what they are about. This is especially true for Internet polls.
I have been in lotro since beta A2 and up.
I t has always been lackluster.
Content wise it was ok, as we got regular updates. However those have slowed way down. Even the last xpac if you can call it that was small in size. I have been on bullroares test center today and even the new book update, well is very sad as well.
The changed the leveling to make it easier, however the 35-50 range has always been hit somewhat hard even with the addition of Forchell. Once your past 50 leveling goes super fast. Once you hit 60 you can make it to 65 in under 24 hours if your hard core.
The problems with this game are lack fun end game content, that has been replace by the how many times you can run a skirmish in a day. It is sad but with each advancing book lotro looks more and more like DND as far as adding more instances.
Just my 2 cnets worth, and its just my thoughts, I speak for nobody else.
