I'm considering trying Fallen Earth and I have a few questions.
Is there casual PvP that won't hurt my character (as in WoW, Guild Wars, City of Heroes) or does PvP have serious consequences (as in Eve)?
Is the game experience significantly different depending on what faction you join?
What are the roles in the game? I know there are no classes (hooray), but there are always different types of characters. For instance, Eve is classless, but you might be a combat pilot, a miner, an explorer, a trader and so on. I would like to try a bunch of different roles to see what works best for me.
Are non-combat (or non-combat focussed) character practical?
How hard is it for a casual player to log in and find a pick-up group?
Comments
PvP is completely casual and done in small zones(not completely small mind you). PvP zones have loads of crafting resources, and there is no true death penalty.
What faction you join effects how ally and enemy faction responds to you. And each faction has 2 allies allowing you to get their skills as well. There is the 3 holy ghosts of mmos(dps, tank, healer).
But you can kind of be a mixture of the 3 as there are no classes, just you and a skill tree. Be careful and plan your character or you'll gimp him. Google globaltechatlas and look at their skill planner.
Non-combat character is absurd in this game, unless your focus is RP. FE does have a decent RP crowd...I think(pvp'er here lol).
Hmmm idk about the group tho, people are real friendly and mature and there are loads of guilds that would take a newb in.
Oh and there is a 10 day trial, so nothing to lose really. Will continue when I'm done with this free month of swg.
1) PvP is not as harsh as it is in games like Darkfall or EVE. Please read: http://fallenearth.wikia.com/wiki/PvP
2) The experience is not significantly different, but the stats/skills/mutations you choose are, depending on your faction. In other words; if you want to become a full healer it wouldn't make much sense to join CHOTA. You can, but it's just not that efficient as it would take you way longer before you're eligible to teach some healing skills, compared to a Lightbearer.
3) Typical arch-types would be: Full Melee damage, Full Rifle damage, Full Crafting, full melee defence, Ranged Healer, Support/Medic, etc. And lot's of hybrids of course.
4) Full crafting is in essence non-combat. You'll probably want to have some basic skills, as it would be hard to harvest resources otherwise.
5) Don't know about pug's, as I'm in a guild myself. Looking at the player base in bigger cities I guess it wouldn't be too hard.
I've wanted to play this game for a very very long time, and I had the pleasure of having the early try-stuff.
I loved this game soooo much, but when I got a bit further in the game I started going into these towns and my computer just couldn't handle it. It rendered at like 2 FPS. And it's odd since I usually was in the 20 FPS area elsewhere. But I guess a lot of buildings on top of eachother equals twice the rendering so. Well. I'll be back when I upgrade my computer in the next months.
Amazingly fun game.
Chris: you may want to try again with the 10-day free trial. The devs fixed the biggest part of the performance problem, and I'm getting a much better framerate compared to when I was playing the beta.
Very useful! Thanks very much!
I'm guessing, then, that variation is mainly a function of combat role and that there is not a lot of point in trying to make sure that I cover different factions per se, or different trade skills per se, as long as the faction is compatible with my combat role.
In other games, I've mostly enjoyed playing DPS, tanks and blasters.
So I'm guessing that in Fallen Earth, that would break down to melee DPS, melee tank, and rifle. Would that be about right? Is there any advantage to adding a pistol specialist to those three?
You REALLY really really do NOT want to spread your weapon specialties too thin. If you do....you'll not only gimp ALL of them, but you won't have the AP you need later on for Mutations.
I would suggest choosing either melee weapons, rifles, OR pistols and not trying to be great at two or more, because then....you won't be good at ANY of them.

Sorry Geekgirl, I phrased my question badly. What I meant to say is that because I like to try different kinds of characters, it sounds like I might want to try a melee DPS character, a melee tank character, and a rifle character. I was asking whether there is any point in adding a pistol specialist character to those three, or whether it isn't sufficiently different from the others to make it worthwhile.

Oh DUH. No, it's not you...it's me. LOL I re-read your post and NOW....I can see that was what you were saying. I'm obviously a bit caffeine deficient today. Let me go take care of that.....
I have a rilfewoman and a melee/crafter at the moment, so I don't really know that much about pistols, but...I know my rifle-chick....is definitely different from my melee. You have to play the ranged weapon classes differently, just like in any other MMO, so I'd say yes...it would be worth it to try pistols on one! I probably will too, eventually. =D

To the OP.
FE isn't a newbie-friendly game. It takes time to learn the game, as other sandbox games (EVE f.e) but you'll get fasten into it, just requires bit of a brain (not like WoW,Lotro,AoC etc) you'll really love it after trying. Give it a try, migth seem weird, clumpy combat in the start but you'll get used to it / love it. Try the trial! Free 10 days.
Currently playing: Fallen Earth
Wants to play: Divergence, Earthrise, Final Fantasy XIV, Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Secret World
Have played these games: Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Aion, Cabal Online, EverQuest II, Guild Wars, Guild Wars Factions, Guild Wars Nightfall, Hellgate: London, Lord of the Rings Online, Runescape and World of Warcraft
A full crafter is completely viable in this game.
You get significant XP and can level at a decent pace just crafting. Not as quickly as a full on combat character, but it can be done with not a lot more effort especially as your crafter gets more experienced.

There are no pure combat characters are there? Everyone is a crafter, right?
What are the best factions for:
A melee DPS specialist?
A tank?
A rifleman?
A pistoleer?
You don't have to craft a single thing if you don't want to. However, you will be spending a lot of chips (currency in game) to have proper armor and weapons. Not only that, but there are many quests that require items and if you're buying from NPCs or the AH, it's going to get expensive.
I recommend looking up Globaltech Atlas and checking their character build tools. You can see suggestions based on fighting types or faction types.

Actually, I'm not trying to avoid crafting. I'm trying trying to get some idea of the different character types I should try. I was thinking melee tank, melee dps, pistoleer and rifleman. However, breaking things down in those four ways leaves crafting entirely out of the equation.
Thanks for pointing out the Globaltech site!
I followed those links. The character guides tell me that my first choice should be combat or crafter!
So, how different is it to play different kinds of crafters?
Also, the guide seems to suggest that there is no tanking role per se, just melee role. Does that seem right?
If you choose to go crafter, you can craft everything from all catagories as all craft skill are influenced by the attributes intelligence and perception. So more to the point of your question, all crafters play out pretty much the same. The only difference would be the combat class you choose to help you with your scavneging.
That would be correct. There are no clear cut defined roles of tank, dps, healer in FE. That being said, when I play my rifleman, I definitely want my melee group mates going in first.

is there a "high-end-content" like instances/sieges/ etc etc
