Star Trek Online: One Million Accounts

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Atari must be sitting pretty happy right now, as they have announced that Star Trek Online has gotten off to a great start. How great, you ask? How about one million registered accounts?

However, one thing we all know about MMOG's is that this isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. This wouldn't be the first time a game has gotten off to such a great start, only to bleed off significantly within the first few months. Hopefully history won't repeat itself here.

It will be interesting to see if they are still that happy after the '30 Days Free' period ends.

     agree

lets see how many renew subscriptions

  • MikailaMikaila Member UncommonPosts: 45

I doubt it will last, from all I hear it will go the Age of Conan way quickly.

But, at least they'll have a lot of extra finances with which they can keep the game going and improve it.

    Personally,

I believe that if Cryptic doesn't get sidetracked and actually has some solid, long term goals and plans (in terms of development practices with STO), that they could turn it into one of the most popular theme-park mmo's of 2010.

Star Trek is such a well known IP, and has so many passionate fans, that I firmly believe if Cryptic listens to the playerbase and moves forward on player suggestions and solutions to issues then they would have every chance to make the game a smash hit and keep that number of active accounts on the rise.

Should be interesting to see if they take a new approach, or make the same mistakes they have made in the past with other titles. Only time will tell, I suppose.

Well, the game it's fun and cost me very cheap (21€ at direct4drive) but those are not subscribers, the 1 milion figure is registered accounts on forum/website, and everybody can register there (It's supposed to change in the future). I suppose that, anyway, it attracted a big number of subscriber, but it's pure speculation.

Didn't we hear this hype-notic tune with Age of Conan, AION and Warhammer launches?

I would guess they'll lose the usual amount once the 30 days is up from those who just didn't like the game. Then they'll losean additional number that will be disgruntled ST fans (a lot of existing IP based mmo's have this, look at WAR, DDO, etc). Then I feel there will be a far greater number due to the subs+mall based pricing. For me this is the most important reason and it's why I'll not be subbing.

I will literally be shocked if their initial SALES numbers are over 250k, I will then be even further shocked if their second or third month PAYING SUBS are over 80k.

Yes we did. That's why I typically don't jump on bandwagons.  (In regards to Torak's post above.)

i preordered the game and like it so i don't think it's surprising at all that STO started off very strong Star trek has a massive fanbase.. and even people who may not like Star Trek very much will still try the game because it has a good SCI-FI futuristic outerspace look and feel to it..

The number of accounts is no problem. I've made 2 accounts for OB (one for myself and one for my son), and our accounts are still active. We both can still post on the STo forum.

So for me the 1M accounts might be true. What I wonder is why they bring out the number of accounts, and not the actual number of sold copies of the game...

...and as stated before... We'll see in 30-60 days how many accounts actually have made it to a subscrption...

So the STO forum have less accounts than this forum... (over 1.1 million members here)

how is this great news for the game???

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

  • MMOrUSMMOrUS Member Posts: 414

    Well done Cryptic.

Depsite the venom and bile spewed out here, it's heartening to see a game of such proportions getting a good start.

    I hope it can prosper.

The game is a blast to play. Once more people realize this. I can only see the numbers going up.

Everytime I play, I can't help but think about all of those wasted hours in Eve, jumping from one system to the next  just to get to where I needed to be. I wasn't a fan of instancing until STO. STO's sector space allows you to get where you want to go in a minute or two and start playing. I'm in love with this game.

I hope it doesn't go the way of Aion, it was great at first too. Unfortunately it really is Wow with wings. Fortunately for STO, it is nothing like Wow or any of the others. It is a refreshing new way to play an mmo.

I knew the name would get it big sales but that's going to drop off fast. The game is just bad. Very bad. The very foundation is flawed. And I really, really want to like this game.

And I love star trek. LOVE! I love MMO's and have been playing them since the realm came out in the mid 90's. But this has to be one of my all time worst MMO's that I have played.

1 million registered accounts =/= 1 million units sold and people playing!

This is again the typical PR Hype machine at it's full force.

Most accounts were creating during beta and a lot of those aren't even playing nor planning to buy the game.

Plus, they are master accounts, wich means they probably also included the CO players along with it, to spice up the numbers. (Just like NCSoft and SOE spice up their numbers. Especially SOE with the Station All Access pass).

Lets see in a month from now, how many people there are left. Then things will become interesting.

Forum numbers do not impress me (which these are), there have been plenty of games with huge "interest" have hit the market and landed with a thud.

We shall see if this is the case with STO

As others have noted this is _not_ the number of ingame accounts, it is not even the number of website accounts specifically for STO. From the original press release on the subject :

Highly Anticipated MMO for PC Releases with Over 1 Million Cryptic Accounts Created

New York, NY (February 2, 2010) – Atari, SA, one of the world’s most recognized videogame publishers, and acclaimed developer Cryptic Studios™, are proud to announce that the bold new PC MMO, Star Trek Online, is available today in North America and throughout the week in worldwide territories. Already, over 1 million Star Trek fans have created accounts at the official websites.

    (Emphasis mine)

The article should be changed to 999,999 because my registered forum account should not count.  I haven't played since closed beta in December and I've not played champions since the start of the new year since the moment STO went open beta the Servers went to hell and back.

I cancelled my preorder a few days ago after preordering it on Jan 3rd but never getting around to actually playing it during the open beta and headstart. Sigh, still wondering if I would've liked this game...

Why is this even considered news worthy?

I have a registered account and haven't even bought the game nor am I subscribed to STO.  This means nothing far as how well the game is selling or will sell.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
