Lag was so bad but they are working on it. it is realistic yes
there is not even a map. you have to do it yourself but there is not a tool to make one that is the problem
not only map...
i played darkfall and i try to play this beta the only thing i can say is OMG this need allot of work
BestSigEver :P
Honestly nothing in the game is fun other than roleplaying. All skill gains are very repetitive and boring only to lead you into some clunky and boring combat. This will keep the average person busy for about 7 days or less, i got bored after three 12 hour long days and i really, really tried to force myself to like it.
In the course of 2 days,(early december, things were ALOT easier) I got my str,con to max and had decent int and dex, taming to 40,riding to max, melee/archery combat max, mounted archery/melee max, 2 handed swords max, magic as high as it could go which was only 35 if i remember right. Then on the third day i rode around on my horse exploring and killing whoever until i got very bored. Since then i have only logged in a few times trying to see a different light and perhaps like it again, but i log out in 30 mins from boredom.
Some people can see fun in this, but i can't. You should just try it out and see for yourself while its free.
while i have no right to comment on the game (haven't played it) to me that sounds like you played the crap out of the game and possibly got burnt out (especially in a non feature complete beta). If you told that sort of story in any game i would come to the same conclusion.
To be fair maxing out stats and skills could well be quite easy and quick but it does seem like you raced through stuff.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
They delivered most of what they promised but they need to squash the bugs, tweak a few things and finish adding a few areas/mobs. There are also some features they won't let us see until release like the unique epic monsters.
Looking at the features page (somone and we know who will link you there and say none of it is in the game)
www.mortalonline.com/features
Next Gen graphics:
They are using UE3 and they have a nice artstyle. Some graphical bugs around, not nearly as bad as some people claim they are.
I think they are using Grome already and they havent implemented speedtree yet because they are waiting for Epic Games China to finish something that integrates it into UE3. A new version of speedtree came out right when they were going to use it so they are waiting instead of using the older version then upgrading to a newer version (more work for them)
Free World:
MO is seamless, no instances or "zones" lile you find in themepark games, but the do have a server cluster and sometimes individual nodes can be laggy. The only loading screen you will see in this game is when logging into the game.
There is a flagging system in place so you can be a murderous player (red flag) or an honorable player (blue flag) and various shades fo grey (thief, etc)
Housing is in place and there are alot of housing 'spots' for now. some are clustered together and some are secluded. Theya re supposed to add free placement once they can get the server optimised to handle it.
You can create a guild, with guild chat. So far there is only 1-2 house models we have been alowed to test the housing system on. Storage is local, no universal banking.
FFA Full Loot PvP is in, and theft is in. Theft needs to be tweaked so its harder to steal stuff, needs more risk/reward.
Crafting is in and you can spend all of your skills to become a crafter and no 2 items are alike, crafting system is awesome, but the crafting ui can be better IMO. They said they will continually work on the various UI elements and damn enar every patch they change soemthing.
Religion is not in, and don't attempt to ask about it, this is one of the secrets that they won't tell us about. All they do is hint to its awesomeness, we will have to wait and see how it works.
There is a respectable sized map, but cartography isn't in so we can't make in game maps and name places yet.
There are caves and towers all over the place but they haven't populated them with mobs yet, not sure what kind of PVE they will put there, another secret.
Resource gathering is in, can mine, chop wood, pick some kinds of herbs and kill stuff to get resources.
Skill-based real-time combat:
This is in, combat is not all about spamming LMB and circle strafing and it's not about following the same rotation.
Characters have 5-7 hitboxes: Head, L-arm, R-arm, Torso, legs, MH and OH weapon/shield. You can aim your attacks and there is directional attacking.
Directional attacks so far are as follows: left to right swing, right to left swing and stab (/cry no overhead yet), you can also push and shield bash. Where you hit determines how much damage you do. If i have no armor on my left arm and my left arm gets hit I take more damage than if I get hit on my armored right arm. if my left arm armor is BETTER than my right arm armor then my left arm armor will take less damage. Headshot does extra damage.
Different weapons perform differently. If you stab with a spear you do more damage than if you slash, if you have a mace you do more damage to certain types of armor.
Archery is like a fps with a bow, you need to aim and can hit different hitboxes.
Magic is basic (they promised basic). There just one basic magic school that has a few low damage spells, a dot a few higher (but not high) damage spells and a couple heals. Magic is not aim based but target based. You aquire a target then when they are within range and in LOS you charge your spell (remain stationary) and can release it (while moving).
Mounted combat is in. Mounted melee, archery and magic. You can use the mount to charge and knock people down (just got a needed nerf).
Overall the combat system is good. (note: most people who RAEG about the combat system try to do it with the slow ass beta harvesting tool, starter rags and no combat skills) If you get a real weapon, some real armor and invest a bit of time into your combat attributes and skills you can see how fun the combat is.
That said they still need to tweak the combat a bit more and add in a few abilities and such to make it great.
legendary Monsters:
From what I have heard from a reliable source (Ceo and devs) they already have epic monsters in the game but will not let us see them yet, aparently the means to awaken it/them has not been added and they won't tell us until they tell us. They keep giving hints since block A about the secrets fot he deep and all kinds fo stuff but are bing tight lipped about it.
Other PVE:
There are caves and towers (mentioned this) but the are not populated so we wont'e see what they have in store for us as far as that is concerned until the add a patch for it.
Most of the mobs in game are resource mobs, kill a lizardman and get: bone, scales and teeth for crafting (no real loot yet). Kill a pig and get a pig carcass that can be processed for various materials.
Most of the items in game are supposed to be crafted so no swords dropping off of wolves and not gems falling out of a deers ass.
Mortal Online overall:
Sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes its laggy, buggy and crashy. Graphics look nice, and with all my settings on high (motion blur off) the game is playable. The need to eventually add a newbie introduction but hopefully not the blatant hand-holding like other games have... With some more bug fixing and tweaking Mortal will be everything they promised, its still in testing and there is no exact release date (no matter how much people try to convince that there is), so they have from now until then to get it ready to go live.
The 'core features' are:
Almost - The full Myrland continent
In - At least 9 races, male and female
In - Blood mix and character customization
In - Main features of the skill system
In - Full PvP, full loot
In - Full melee and ranged combat
In - Basic magic combat
In - Mounts and mounted combat
In - Basic GUI for the crafting system
In - Resource gathering
In - Basic Guild mechanics
In - Basic player housing
Almost - Basic NPC mobs and wildlife
??? - Hidden/secret features
My sig is just as logical as your posts are
its just incomplete at the moment, way too few things to do. but they are very honest about what is in game, you can read on their site what they have been working on in the last few months. and compared to size of the dev team, they do work hard on it.
I just doubt they will get a player base big enough to support the development...but good luck to them.
Sandbox =/= empty world. That's a misconception made by people who dont understand sandbox MMORPGs.
They think, wrongly, that since themepark has lots of content than obviously a sandbox cannot have content or it would become a themepark.
What they fail ro realise is that you need to create a proper environment for a sandbox world to thrive. You cant put up a 3D engine with a couple of mobs here and there, some resources for crafting and then expect it to thrive. You need to have a world where there are territories worth fighting over.
As an example I would say the best FFA PvP sandbox game ever made was Asherons Call on the DT server.
There were multiple "resources" there that was fighting for:
These are just some examples but by designing a world where there was a need and a demand for certain resources you had complex territories building up with different guilds fighting over different areas. That in turn created an awesome sandbox FFA PvP world which was dynamic and intriguing.
In contrast Mortal Online has really none of these (except maybe gold). Exp does not exist, since it is a skill based game, and I havent really found any quests that are worth doing (are there even any quests at all?). So it all comes down to maxing your skills and then fight for no real reason and since you lose so much when dying there is no real reason to take on an even opponent, so people tend to gank noobs and the whole game becomes a pointless gankfest.
Atleast Darkfall had buildable cities to fight over, MO has nothing.

Normally I'd agree. In this case the game really is that bad.
Visually, its amazing. Pretty as hell, and its nice to just walk around in and explore. As a game, its abysmal, as there is barely any game there.
Lets put it this way, I just got my DVD in the mail, and it actually made me a little depressed.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

What? Seeing as Gears of War used the same engine I really cant understand how you think MO has amazing visuals.
Really you should check out games like Gears of War to see what the Unreal engine is capable of and then revise your statement.
Just compare:

Just as an outsider, I've seen plenty of vids to tell you that this is a very good looking *MMO*. Compared to most of the other ones out there it's even better looking. Trying to compare this to Gears of War, and God help you if I hear Crysis, is just an attempt at throwing more fuel on the fire. This game has all the retarded DF proponents turned hater that should have just stuck to their caves. I think it's obvious to anyone what shape this game is in, I don't even play it and I know.... but if something has all the people whose opinions were worthless when they are gnawing at DF a year ago, then there might actually be merit to it.
People bitch of the sake of bitching, granted there are obvious reasons to, but the sheer amount of it from people in these forums I totally recognize as habitual trolls tells me I need to try this game. They are usually wrong about everything else.

I compared Gears of War because they use the exact same GFX engine.
But sure, compare it to AoC or Aion and you will get the same results. MO visuals is nothing close to amazing, it is a terrible implementation of the awesome Unreal engine. And DFs gfx are worse, so I dont know why you brought that into this argument.
I would say that Lineage 2 has much nicer visuals than Mortal Online and it used an even OLDER Unreal engine (if I am not entirely misstaken).

So you compared a game that has restricted maps and makes use of a set amount of resources... to a game that is supposed to accomodate a variable number of players, effects, and situations.
It's not like Gears of War could play any other way than what it was programmed to.
It's not like they have to account for a variety of possibilities and situations that could potentially crash the game.
Once an area or level is done on Gears of War.. you get to go back and detail the crap out of it until it's released.
MMOs, even if they use the same engine, don't operate in the same method.
It's not like a movie or a book that has a beginning and an end...
Do you understand why Gears of War looks the way it does, and why an MMO using the same engine could possibly not match the same level of detail?
If not, we can continue discussing it.
I brought it up hoping you'd have a moment of wisdom.
Gears of War is a single player game with small zones and few things to handle in multiplayer. It can get away with crazy graphical detail because you don't have miles of view distance and the chance of dozens of mobs being in the same place.
Aion *and* AoC are instanced [because they have to be] in order to keep up with the graphical detail.
Darkfall looks the way it does to help with how massive the game world is, MO will be lucky if it even works right due to the route it took in going further with it. You have no clue what you are talking about, and this is why I'm DLing this game right now. Chances are you just need a muzzle.
I have no clue what I am talking about? I have played Aion and been in battles with 50 people on screen and it runs flawlessly and the PvP zone in that game is NOT instanced and I have heard of battles with houndreds of people running with little lag. How does MO perform with houndreds of people in close proximity? Yeah, excactly.
The fact that you think this arcaic looking MMORPG looks very good and try to make false excuses just shows that YOU have no clue. Mortal Onlines visuals are terrible, any objective person who plays computer games should be able to see that.
My gaming blog
I never got to Abyss to contest that, but chances are that each section of it is broken off from the next in some kind of instance or bubble-loading tech.

Aion, MMO with PvP battles containing houndreds of people. The Abyss is not instanced...
Lineage 2, uses Unreal 2.5 (MO uses Unreal 3) and is not instanced and also has large PvP battles.
AoC is instanced but I have been in keep battles with maybe 30-40 people and it works fine.
Mortal Online lags to a crawl if you have more than 10-15 people close to you and it is supposed to be in open beta.
The fact that you guys think that an indy company with limited resources could produce top quality 3D game just shows that you dont understand how hard it is to create a good looking game. The Unreal 3 engine has such huge potential it is quite embarrasing the little Starvault can get out of it.
My gaming blog
The game is not that bad, it just lacks content and a bit of polish. The UI isn't the most intuitive, it could use some work. They need to add mobs and territory control for it to be worth spending a lot of time on. In the meantime it can be very fun. The world is immersive, the graphics are great, the combat is okay, not great, They have a content patch coming very soon (during open beta) that will add more mobs and tweak combat some. It's worth the download, definitely. The only thing it needs for now is more mobs and for the UI to made a little more user friendly. At least mobs are coming in a patch soon. Most of the bad that has been said about the game since open beta started can be attributed to lag. When it's not lagging it's pretty awesome, I think.

And then back to me.
One, that Gears picture is concept art, not a screenshot. Two, is Gears an MMO? I don't think so. You show me an MMORPG with anything remotely close to the graphics of a single player/small multiplayer game. MMORPGs require weaker graphics so people's computers don't explode when there's loads of people/NPCs on screen, and to accommodate a variety of PCs - all 360's run the same software with the same performance, not all PCs do. For an MMORPG, it has some of the best, most realistic graphics out there. Even AoC with its graphics is instanced to the point that you'll never see that many people at once. Mortal is non-instanced. Considering the type of gameplay it offers, the graphics ARE amazing. Also, we don't have access to high res textures yet in the client, the graphics are capped right now.
Lastly, that screenshot of mortal is before they added foliage, so it would look much better/more lively now.
Fixed that for ya.
Well I tried the game today, I'll admit I lasted all of an hour in game, I was hugely let down, the UI and controls are terrible, the graphics are odd to say the least, the fact of no direction at the start, no tutorial or any sort of lure is just dated, it felt like a poor free to play mmorpg that was in closed beta, I'll explain my points:
The UI and control system: The user interface is extremly hard to get used to, for example to be able to harvest a tree, you have to press L to get skills open, then go to a menu then havesting then woodcutting, then drag the icon to hotbar. Then you have to find a tree, which is easy enough, press x to go into combat mode, then after all that press 1 to cut wood. This process isn't well thought out, not simple, and not easy to use, why didn't they just have a menu where you can select your useable or learnt skills and drag that to the hotbar?
When you are walking around the world, you can't use your mouse to click on buttons, this makes you remember the hot keys, which is fine for someoen thats played the game for some time, but at the start this is hard.
Even talking to an NPC is hard, you have to go up to an NPC, what springs to mind to talk to an npc, click them with the mouse? nope that doesn't work, enter key? not that, the E key as used by many FPS, nope that doesn't work either its the R key, odd choice as E seems to do nothing.
The Graphics: Seems to be a hot topic on this game, the screenies look a lot better than my computer could output on max settings, i can tell you that much, I have to say it reminded me of a Free to play mmo, is was boxy, nothing had specular lighting, particles, no moving folliage, no cloth movements, or even moving npcs, everything was lifeless. The grass didn't suit the desert floor, for obvious reasons, but the texturing on the buildings were quite good. The characters themselves aren't very detailed, definatly knowing how the unreal engine can handle textures, it wasn't well done and lost detail, maybe if they didn't concentrate on creating gentials for the characters and gave them clothes instead, more polygons could of been used in more important things. I say the graphics were odd because nothing seemed to suite or fit, grass in the desert with trees, a town that was just a street and didn't connect to the harbour right next to it.
The Start: When you start the game, you are just dropped off by a spaceship or something, you are there for what ever purpose you want, as there is no story to say how you became or why you are there, but the only tutorial is to press H key for help, which due to the control system is one of the useful things ever lol. You are in First Person perspective, with again for a mmo is different, but the movement made me feel ill as the camera sways to mimic breathing, but i'm sure my eyes don't move with each breath I take. All the motion blur is overdone as it is more like being drunk than being sober, when I turn my head nothing goes blurry only at really high speed.
With all the features that the game promises, the skill based leveling system, the fac you can make everything, housing, pets, open world, pvp, etc, I was expecting more, I'm not on about the bugs in my review, I'm on about the choices that the developers have made, its a very old mmorpg in modern times. I thought lots of research have been done to create programs that were accessable, there is now even guidelines in place to make sure websites are accessable, meaning it is easy to use. This game isn't for me, but maybe I'm being picky? I don't know, good luck to them, but I hope that patches make this game a lot more easier to use and fun.
Someone soon will post "just use your imagination" lol...
I'm just very sad they didn't implement manual breathing. How hardcore would it have been if you had to hit two keys, one to breath in, and one to breath out? What a let down.
the idea of the game itself has a lo of potential, but hey... Dark and Light had potential too
/sarcasm
There is no knowledge that is no power.
Yep letdown, that would have made it super hardcore! haha =P
1) Choppy, Laggy (very laggy)
2) Graphic under par. half is good half is awful, high rez textures are mixed with low rez textures.
3) The world looks fake, you can see it is made with Speedtree..............(there are very good looking areas which are hand crafted, but the majority of the world feels random generated)
4) Combat really slow. I am not sure if that is good or not yet, need to test a little bit more, but for now I am not liking it at all.
5) No content, just craft and PvP
6) Character animation is very basic
7) Death penalty is way too harsh (looking for a Priest after being fully looted is a step too far)
8) Not enough magic skills
9) Client very unstable, it crashes frequently
There are few good things like the skill system and generally the game promise well, but the current state of the game is an advanced alpha
I ll keep checking on it after every patch, but is not purchase material yet.
