BBB works like this "Give in to our demands or we'll give you an F" they are a company that makes money off of bullying other conmpanys around not to many people give them a lot of credit these days they use sleezy tactics. Instead I believe my own personal experience matters the most to me. So I try it I like it I buy it I play it. If I don't like it I leave. Simple concept one I'll continue to use for many many more upcoming MMO's.
The thing is...that's common practice. But, it's harder when companies lure you into buying before you can try (preorders). If I want to play my Joined Trill in my TOS uniform (which are only half in the game) I would have to take a gamble.
This thread is funny. I love how the OP states right off that they are only a moderate fan of ST. OP, your honesty almost negates your intention with this thread. I say almost because you admit your not a big fan so at least I know your only a partial hater.
Of course you will not like the game as much if you are not more than just moderately interested in the games IP. I would have hated LOTRO if I had not liked Tolkiens books, then Jacksons movies. The same with SWG, if i had not liked the movies or the books I probably would have hated that game too.
I like this IP. I love the space combat, now the ground combat....that leave something to be desired, but I can't say I hate the game just because I dislike a portion of it. Hopefully it will get better, but if it doesn't, aw gosh darnit, I guess I'll have to go on living my life.
The BBB is 99% spot on it's recommendations and ratings.. It's why most companies strive for a favorable BBB rating and post it.. and why the BBB has been around for "decades".. I have personally dealt with the BBB from both ends and find them professional..
However, in my experience over the years.. Computer gaming companies have the worst business practices in any industry.. Why? Because there are too many that "need" gaming to enjoy life.. Those type will take whatever it tossed at them, like a bad drug, and say thank you.. How can I prove it? TURN OFF your computer and walk away.. find some new entertainment for 6 months.. So.. in the gaming industry, companies can get away with sh*tty ratings, because they know you'll be coming back to them to buy your next "hit"..
Being a Star Trek fan for a couple of years, I think I can answer this. I do hate the game, here are the reason why. Star Trek online was being developed by another company a few years ago, it was a very promising game, showed great potential, working your way from ensign to captain, crew being player based. Exploration, missions, combat, diplomacy, discovery...It had it all. But the company who first developed it stopped producing it for various reasons.
A year or 2 later, cant quite remember when I first heard of its revival, I was really looking forward to it, I told myself, how can they let a project like Star Trek online go, and I knew the game would be great, no matter what. But when I saw video's, I was puzzled." What is this? This is not star trek online." After looking into it further, I realised to my deepest regret that it was, they scrapped the original idea and then did what Star Trek online is now. I was dissapointed, never will I have to be a chief engineer, fixing the warp core before it overloads, never will I be the Security chief who go on away mission and keep the ship safe. I guess they thought the game would have been too hard to the casual players, so they tweaked it down a lot and we have a Pirates of the Burning sea look alike. The only aspect they kept from the original design was Character Creation.
so to Star Trek fans, dont go into this game. You will be painfully heartbroken on how damaged this game is and how it lacks all the contents needed to feel your in a Star Trek universe.
I mean, it was always going to be a good game, even mmorpg.com's 3 part beta-review basically laid it out for everone... but most have adamantly stuck by their pre-order decision and bought it... yes, its good in parts, worth the box price indeed.
But its an mmo, so what now? Would you go back to it in a month, two months? 6?.. or after an expansion?
Same thing happened for me with AoC, and ive not re-subbed since it came out, I thought I might do one day.. but, I still feel let down by it, and would rather move on.
I think that one single word describes this game best: soulless.
Why? It was developed in two years, it was developed quickly and cheaply, it was developed to be another cash cow that Cryptic could milk, it was developed to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
People can tell when stuff is made for purely profit reasons and when stuff is made for the sake of making stuff (i.e. art for art's sake.) This isn't a black/white on/off thing, there's a continuum. For example, films tend to run from complete art all the way to complete profit, but most fall somewhere in between those two extremes.
As a video game, Star Trek Online lands in the "profit" part of the spectrum. Games like EVE Online and City of Heroes land closer to the "good video game" part of the spectrum. Even WoW is closer to the "good video game" end of the spectrum than Star Trek Online.
People know this, they can feel it when they hear about and play this game. That's why this game is experiencing such a huge backlash. Especially Star Trek fans (and it can be argued that at its best, Star Trek gravitates heavily toward the art part of the spectrum,) who were expecting to see something they love treated with the attention and respect it deserved.

I'm a big fan of Star Trek and I agree with the OP, does that make her points valid now?
Just send all the STO ships through a jumpgate and into a nulsec system of Eve. Solve it all in a few seconds. I'll be there with a salvage whore'd destroyer.
I wouldn't say I am a huge star trek fan, but I enjoy the series and movies. I kind of geek out at the technology aspect of it at times. I didn't buy this game, nor will I. I played the beta for about a week and like others said, I didn't feel the game was worth the money. It reminded me of a mishmash of eve online and tabula rasa (RIP). The polish was fairly good, and everything seemed to pretty much work. It just wasn't fun. I kind of chuckled at the different "classes" if you will. Tank. Healer. Crowd control. *sigh* Maybe I've played too many MMO's but the mechanics of the game (when on a planet) was too much like the typical fantasy MMO dressed up in star trek clothing.
Oh and Bill Roper was a big warning too.
After Hellgate London the fact that they were looking at offering lifetime subs told me they don't have confidence in their own game.
Best of luck if you enjoyed it. I'm thinking I have reached the point of MMO burnout, and it offers nothing new to change that feeling.
I don't hate STO, but I was very disappointed with it. All it felt like to me was to boldly go to another instance and blow things up. Too much cheese and not enough meat.
I think they could still turn it into a decent game and one that I might play someday, however I will not pay for a game that is half finished and buggy. I have a few friends who are playing the game and having fun with it, but it is the first MMO for all but one of them.
Like I said in the other thread. This game really won't last long.
When you take a look ingame. The whole community is going to hell already.
Constant fighting, insults, flaming in the chats (you thought Barrens chat in WoW was bad? lol). All kinds of languages flowing by in chats.
That's why most other MMO's have german and french servers for example. Just because of the obvious cultural differences.
Then you got all those idiots with offensive names versus the naming police. Another endless bickering and fighting in chat.
It's pretty funny really... as the fans are working eachother on it's nerves and killing their own game in a record pace!
So anyone who had the idea that this game, being Star Trek and all with it's loyal following, would have a somewhat mature community! They will be in a for a big suprise. As this game is litterly filled with a bunch of 12-year olds.
Then we come to the following point... I have been in many many groups so far (those auto forming ones) and in only 1 single group people actually talked with eachother! Only 1 !!
In all the other groups I could say Hello, Hi or whatever .... people just do their own thing and are out again. No cooperation. Nada.
Except for the Intergalactic warzone in the chat channels, this game trully is a Single Player Experience! What a joke.
I don't hate the game. I play it, though I really wish Perpetual had been a little smarter with their money and not gone bankrupt. We're looking to blame Cryptic Studios for 'ruining' the game. Truth be told they made their own, Perpetuals died with them. I blame Perpetual for not delivering what they promised, whereas Cryptic promised no such thing. Which game would I rather have? Perpetuals, but its not a perfect world.
Star Wars has another chance at delivering an MMO title. If star wars can produce two decent mmos, then surely we can make a good star trek 'sim based' game. The only thing I can say about player crews lacking is, ships would've been hard to come across, at least good ones. Maybe you could've flown a shuttle but meh. So the whole ideas that player crew spaces would be filled by AI wouldn't be great unless the ship was less than a ship that say, you'd have to have a crew/guild to purchase. I.E reward people for working as a crew. It's just a very risky game to make, as Perpetual showed us.
Always have abit of hope though.
Longing for Skyrim, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3

Being a moderate ST fan is enough I think when you look at the big fans. I enjoy watching Star Trek but I have never cos-played nor do I speak Klingon (but I'm in the know enough to know that people actually do this). Instead of trying to find a morsel of something to pick at in order to invalidate my opinions, why not go play the game that you so desperately enjoy while the rest of us flame here a little in between playing and making constructive suggestions to perhaps better the game on the official STO forums.

Kirk: We need more power!

Kirk: BRB, need more Cryptic points.

And to make matters worse. Cryptic doesn't even want you to group with other players: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=103288
I am glad I am riding along on a free headstart key. As even 5 bucks would have been a waste of money on this thing.
"Space. The final frontier. blah blah blah. to boldly instance everything that cryptic has done before" "Star trek credits and music"
