Aika-5 Minute Review

Face it, Aika is great on paper, but the game is FAR from being ready-even for closed beta testing. I played for FIVE minutes. I know that many of you will start criticizing me for only playing for that long, but hey, those that do so are blatantly showing their inability to read everything.

 

Now, I've only played for five minutes and I have already seen way too many fundamental flaws with this game. These are not things like slow leveling, slow killing speeds, typos, or whatnot. These are the things that make or break games.

 

1. Incredibly easy to bug up the WASD controls. In 5 minutes of playing, I've had my character perform a walking animation on the spot on several occasions. Besides that, the rendering of your character's orientation is off-you will start walking in one direction while facing another. Movement in general is very buggy.

2. Cannot jump off a wall. You may laugh at this, but hey, it's pretty basic.

3. Wallhacks. Well, not through the walls, but through other doodads. I'm quite used to running through small fences and such; being able to run through entire rocks is a whole other matter. Some rocks let you walk halfway through them then magically teleport you above them.

4. Textures. The camera seems to close in at a fixed rate, causing many texture render bugs.

5. EZ-mode. This is a two-way topic, but the quests pretty much hold your hand through everything. Where's the adventure?

 

I'll say this now: the only good part about this game is the graphics, and even at that, they're not exactly the best (even compared to only F2Ps). I suppose the lolis are another big plus, but only if you're into that sort of thing, and face it, 99% of the people playing Aika are playing for the lolis.

 

So, to sum up my 5-minute-review: Aika Online has some great concepts behind it, but it really is NOT ready for closed beta testing.

 

EDIT: Before you people post saying it's CBT and bugs are to be expected, watch  After watching, reconsider your standpoint.

    Closed Beta Testing not ready? Buddy before that its alpha testing and alpha testing you got like almost a pure naked ui most textures missing most of the zones missing..

     

    You clearly don't understand your testing stages.

     

    Quick Review of testers:

    - they suck

    - they don't understand what closed beta means

    - they think closed beta means review time

    - they think its a trial period to test out the game to decide if its worth buying

     

    What testers use to do years ago:

    - test

    - report bugs

    - and help input their feedback

    The OP came here to complain about bugs rather than submitting a ticket so they can fix it.  Seems like he just wanted a head start in a new perfect game rather than to test it. Gratz man you fail at testing.

    WASD movement bug I believe was reported by someone else, the text is very well done with a few typos(expected), and the adventure is in the story but then again you would have to read it and take part in.

    Over-all from a day of play, its one of the better open betas I've played. Tons of people are loading down the server and there is minimal lag and other than a few minor details it seems good to go at early levels. Lets hope later levels are the same.

    It's not bad at all, tbh. It's just not my type kind of a game.

    The characters besides mine have been having 2-3 sec delay to move. Some could be sudden. No lag on my end, but it's recognizable when I'm controlling the character, duh? :)

    The transparency on Aion-alike UI? Seriously, darken it up and make it readable lol.

    Orange-thin font is so hard to read on it, sheesh.

    Noone could answer my simple question on the chat. Which one was I supposed to use to talk to people in general? Hell, I tried them all and looked stupid by the people near me. /shrug I don't see my name popping up in one of them.

    Not keen on forced gender-class combos. I wanted to be a warlock and THEY chose MALES to be THAT class. They could've been gunners for all I care >.>

     Again, I'm not reviewing the game based on content (but hey, how many people ever read carefully?). Even in a beta, there are certain things that should be done PROPERLY. If it's a brand new indie developer, sure, they have some excuse, but this is gPotato. They've got experience.

     

    The fact of the matter is, 'new' games these days are simply old ones with new, shiny graphics, quests, and whatnot. Considering that this is NOT a new company, shouldn't the fundamental basics (ie. movement) be complete and (for the most part) bug-free? Even if your company is creating a new engine from scratch (highly unlikely), it should still have enough experience in the field to be able to do it right the first time.

     

    @Knightcry: You are a perfect example of a someone that fails at reading. Not only did you not see WHY I decided to review this game, you also fail to see the type of beta it's in. Gratz man, you fail at reviewing reviews.

    CBT is all about testing it out then reporting bugs etc, normally games go through several CBT and I've always noticed that after each CBT, the game content and whatever bugs have always improved since then, so I really dont see the point of this post at all...

    I actually enjoy testing games for bugs, but the pretense of a BETA implies that the game is a prototype of the game that will be marketed. Something like movement should NOT be bugged; that should have been figured out a LONG time ago. That was really the only major issue I had with the game being released as a closed beta, but it wouldn't have been much of a post with just one point, so I figured I'd bring in the other flaws that I had noticed immediately. Again, if I can play for five minutes and find five issues, those are some things that the alpha testers probably should have reported.

     

    Also, I'm not the one that brought up whatever choices they made for the classes.

     

    @kanechart: These are fairly damn basic things, so I'm certain other people will have reported them already. I'm merely trying to bring to attention that gPotato shouldn't have released this game yet, even as a closed beta.

     I'm sorry Tanon but your posts backing yourself up have been pretty bad. 

    1. Yes gPotato has been around for a while but they didn't make the game.  It was made by Hanbitsoft (or JoyImpact) and gPotato is just hosting it for North America.  I wouldn't be surprised if gPotato would fail miserably at creating an MMORPG since they don't actually make them.  They buy licenses and distribute.

    2. gPotato is pretty successful so I think they know what they are doing when they buy games to distribute.

    3. It's Closed Beta.  Not Open Beta, not Release.  It's Closed Beta.   Bugs are to be expected.  gPotato's job was translating the game, not bugfixing.  Bugfixes come from the developers who wrote the game unless it is a very small fix, then gPotato can handle it.

    4. Yes, in Beta the game is a prototype for the game that will be marketed.  Prototype means a model of the product to come.  Prototypes usually still have a lot of bugs in them, even in the tech world.  If people started releasing prototypes with no problems, they wouldn't be prototypes they would be finished products.

    5. Even though you tried to excuse yourself I'm gonna grill you for it. "5 minute review" you are basing all your assumptions off of that.  Well let me tell you how my first 5 minutes went.

    But guess what, after the first few minutes all those problems went away.  From what I can remember, AIKA works by caching graphical information so that it can be accessed much faster later on.  This causes quite a bit of slow down in the first few minutes of play (sometimes causing graphical glitches) but afterwards speeds up and only needs to load things if a "not seen before" item comes onto the screen.  This is why AIKA can have 2000 people battling at once and is also why the longer you are in the game the faster it goes.

    About EZ-mode: you did the first maybe three quests.  Which are the newbie quests.  Newbie quests are designed so that people new to the MMO genre (or to the current game) can get accustomed to NPC locations and how to play.  Hell, this wasn't even as hand-holdy as other newbie quests in games I've played.  Would you rather be plunked into the game and be told "Kill the Red-Crested Death Eagle" and not be told where said monster appears?  Then you have hundreds of noobs getting frustrated and quitting.  Of all your arguments this was the worst.

    No, you cannot jump off walls (don't know any MMOs where you can do that)

    And for the camera/textures just zoom out a bit.  It's pretty simple.  Unless you are talking about things that didn't happen to me since most of my issues graphically were with entering/intersecting meshes.

    -Games shouldn't be reviewed when in any form of beta(given I thought)

    -Games in beta have bugs(lol given?)

    -It takes longer than 5 minutes and starter quests to determine content

    -Adventure is a Bear Grylls thing, not XXXsephirothXXX

    -CoD 6 care pack glitchers make my controllers break

    -Hyphen as a listing method beats numbers

    I have never seen any F2P game that has as good graphics as Aika.

    To my eyes the graphics are very close to Aion's graphics.

    The first quests are aimed at beginners and alot of handholding are in motion during the first 5-10 levels in any MMO.

    Report the bugs or don't you know that it's closed beta?

    All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

    It was the fist day that they let people try the game so it was flooded with people hence the experience you had which probably was graphics lag and your computers fault entirely (buy a better graphics card, buttercup) and most people that plays are children that probably doesn't know much about anything anyway or can understand english for that matter.

    People were just busy playing the game and figuring things out and having fun.

    Maybe you should do something else besides playing childrens games when you have become so old and grumpy? *wink-wink*

    All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

    Do you actually think your input matters?

    The build we are playing was released in Korea over a year ago. The only testing being done are the servers and spelling.

    By the way, here's my 5 second review: completely forgettable and already uninstalled, the only memorable aspect of the entire game is the quest dialog(which just became a bother after a while).

    5. This isn't a brand-new, groundbreaking game. This is just the same thing as pretty much every other MMO out there on the market today. I really don't think you need something to hold your hand-hell, even a tutorial shouldn't be all that necessary. Besides, that's another reason people quit-it's all easy in the beginning and players get accustomed to it, but then slam a 'Kill the Red-Crested Death Eagle' and they won't be willing to do it. They'll wait for a guide, or level up and skip around that quest until they can do it easily.

    6. Are you serious? You've never played WoW?

    7. I'll relate this to WoW again; in WoW, when you are standing next to a wall and turn your camera so that the wall is in between your character and the camera, your camera auto-zooms. It also utilizes faded objects. In Aika, it just renders the inside of the building and messes up the graphics. This is because of negligence on the developer's part; in WoW, if you bug yourself such that you go underneath the allowed terrain, everything will look buggy. Why? Because you were never intended to have your camera down there. The developers did indeed know about this problem and tried to solve it; long story short, they failed. Again, these are some things that running around for a few minutes (even in an alpha test) would reveal.

     

    @Knightcry: Once again, you have failed to read. Your capacity for ignorance astounds me.

     

    @Mellow44: I simply stated they weren't the best; never said they weren't good. Also, please actually read the statements other people have posted.

     In defense of the OP, gPotato is handing out so many beta keys i can hardly call this a closed beta. When mmorpg.com alone receives around 10k keys this is just a limited open beta (lets not start argueing over semantics here shall we :) )

    just saying that if the publisher hands out so many keys they see the game ready for mass consumption, when its clearly not. so i doubt a lot will improve (short term)

    but i do hope the worst bugs are gone when open beta starts, the RvR system sounds great (on paper).

    gPotato has handed out 19,000 keys.  Of those about 14,000 have been accepted.So that makes 14,000 players if all of them decide to play and play more than five minutes (not going to happen).

    Say each player plays an average of 3 hours per day.  That means only 1/8 of the players are on at average at any given time that means there will be 1,750 players online at any given time.  Now some players will play more than 3 hours, some will play less.  This is also affected by players who want to PvP and players who are high enough level.  Let's say out of the 14,000 players that accepted keys, 95% signed up, of that 95% 95% got the game to work and 95% of those who got the game to work decided to stick with the game.  Those are estimates, but they are estimated pretty high.



    This leaves about 12,000 players who are playing.  10% of those are under level 10 or have not finished the citizenship quest leaving 10,800 players.  Etc.

     

    Not everyone who took a key is using it to the fullest, so gPotato has to estimate high and give out a lot more keys than they need to.

    WHAT!WHAT!WHAT! 1000vs 1000 now that is my friend is a great news no wonder it has a grainy look!but knoing it support 1000vs 1000 i can live with the way the game look now it makes a lot more sense i ll lower my res to recommended

    i only have played the game til lvl 3 so far it kinda reminds me of aion so far doesnt seem that bad yet though same could be said about aion i suppose though my comp isnt bottoming out in the starter area like it did with aion

    Not crazy about the whole daughters idea though dont know much about it at this point and the gender lock kinda bites but not that big a deal 

    the one thing that is bothering me most is the whole control scheme could use some tweaking as soon as i  play more ill have something for my blog but til then i have to say it seems ok so far
