Enough people to keep the game from being void of fun, but it could still use a few thousand more to make it epic. It's slowly gaining people as far as I know.
The problem with DF is that if it is too populated, you are not able to do anything else apart from PvP.
Good thing, you say..................not really.
Since Gathering, PVEing and crafting are what finance your PvP, if you are not able to do any of that, you won't be able to PvP decently either.
DF at the moment could do with few thousands more players, but as someone said already, during the weekends I wish few people would piss off, so I can get something done................
It is epic already and gets better with each passing day, don't let anyone fool you into thinking differently. I'd love to give you some concrete numbers, but it would just be an estimate at best, and I'm not comfortable making those types of assumptions.
It has been rapidly gaining new players for months, with many of those staying on for the long haul. It may have started off slowly, but is moving at a good pace these days and has been steadily growing for quite some time now.
A little TOO damn populated on weekends...I can't get shit done today, people keep suicide rushing our city. Need to gather some regs, but just too much PVP today.
LOL, this is why I try to do all my gathering in the morning before work =p

Yeah, I harvest what I can get when I can get it. You can always get what you need, it just might not be right that very second.

Ohhhh so I have you to thank for that iron loss I sustained this morning. Dammit why didn't I bank sooner, I know better.

What goes around comes around, man. I was down to my last mount today, so I headed to "my spot" on Ruby to farm some steedgrass. (any idea how hard it is to find a bush in the desert?? lol)
I had gathered a couple.....and was thinking I should bind home and bank.....but my greed got he best of me, and I went for another....
And of course....predictibly, get rolled by a group of 5 reds.

The game has a very stable population. It is epic already and gets better with each passing day, don't let anyone fool you into thinking differently. No it dosnt. The NA server may now...and that is ONLY because quite a few fence sitters like myself decided to take the plunge. There are a number of aspects about DFO however that ARE NOT USER FRIENDLY. Those caps by the way...were just for you. Here is a example, war deccing peeps to farm them, disbanded clan, to avoid relalation, reforming.., and repeating. This is typically done to farm new peeps whom clan, and have no keep. Hell, its done to farm anyone if the assailant thinks he can get away with it. IN THIS SCENARIO...it dont matter if you have a tower parked up your posterior... your going to get farmed...standing in the middle of a npc city.
IF AV intends to grow the population of DFO things like this need to be addressed. As it is, there are wayyy to many ways to grief people in this game. Someone grinding mats? Jump on thier head...game over. They cant do shit...these are the types of things that have absolutely nothing to do with sandbox...meta game, or anything else. They are LOOPHOLES that allow the select few whom care not one bit...about the game...its population or the longevity of DFO, and are also those that ardently defend this sort of "sandbox". This is not going to foster a robust population...the game itself is harsh enough as it is...you can be killed by anyone anytime.
AV needs to get a grip...and fix these sorts of things, further HACKING is alive and well in DFO. This needs to be policed...at any rate, failure to make the game more user friendly will doom this game to a few thousand hard core players...much like DAOC was reduced to when I cancelled.
Its been intersting for me to date, but I wont call this game home unless things like the examples above are fixed, and we NEW players cannot be exploited non stop. You laud the population of the game now? Wait six months, lets see what happens then.

Heh, yeah I completely avoid PvE on Saturday and Sunday. It's like being in a shooting gallery. I know alot of people think the population is too low, but I'd say its currently about perfect.
I see just enough people to keep me on my toes while still generally being able to get in a fair bit of PvE.

They've already confirmed they plan on doing something about the Wardeccing issue. They haven't released details, but I believe they said it was going to be addressed in an upcoming patch.
You'll need to do a bit of reading on the caveats for those numbers... but it's the only numbers that aren't purely subjective that anyone has for DarkFall. They just recently added the active players feature for the NA server. They've initially placed everyone as active, and then they will mark players as inactive depending on a few factors.
You can read about their criteria for being marked active/inactive here:
Anyway, to answer your question... the NA server has about 8,146 players (+ unclanned and - inactives). That number is an increase of about 1,200 since tracking started back in November... from the first link above. Check back at the links I've posted above to see how the active/inactive changes over the next few weeks.

Last time someone posted numbers it was like 8k on NA and 10k on EU.
Not bad for a hardcore niche game.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP

That's what they said six months ago....and six months before that.....
