I'd describe it as a simplified Diablo 2 version for kids.
I mean.. it's a nice game but I don't see a reason for Diablo 2 players to get excited about this game.
World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around.

I'd describe it as an extremely fun and cheap timewaster
what you described also applies to FATE

Other than it looks better, plays better, and has some awesome Modding tools coming out?

Yep
Even though what you said is true that doesn't help the game I'll be honest with you.. the responses I read in forums about this game were like mine, people are just feeling that the rushing through floors in that mine killing monsters just bores them and like one guy said in these forums : "Just doesn't have the X factor", maybe the mmo version will bring something new to the table otherwise I think this game is just a bore, they did a very nice job with ogre3d graphics engine though.

Sounds like some people have a hard time grasping what a dungeon crawler is, then feel like crying about it when they get bored due to there own ignorance about what the genre is all about.
If you buy a dungeon crawler, and expect to get more than dungeon crawling out of it, you are kidding yourself right off the bat.
Would you go buy a steak from the grocery store and then complain that it wasn't a roast chicken? when you knew full and what it was when you bought it?
I think not.

Don't really crying just giving my opinion, don't take it hard mate. I don't know if you consider D2 what you refer to as a "Dungeon Crawler" but I played D2 for years and Torchlight is like I said a simplified kids version of it, you ask what I expected? I expected some innovation from the guys who helped develop D2 except a a pet and some other minor features (IMO), it's not like this forum very active as it is so no reason not to share opinion

Diablo 2 IS a dungeon crawler...
I played D2 for years as well, and I still play it to this very day.
Innovation? when did Runic ever say TL was going to be innovative in any way? You made the mistake of forming what is known as a false expectation, and when the game didn't live up to your expectations of it, you cried fowl.
Explain to me how D2 is more complex than Torchlight in any way, and I might be willing to put some merit in your statement. Show me facts - not personal opinion - that prove TL is a "simplified kids version" of D2.
Put your money where your mouth is.

Ye I thought tourchlight will have some innovation and it won't be simplified version of D2 with almost exact features and characteristics.
That is my opinion thus I post in the forum, if you're looking for facts "You made the mistake of forming what is known as a false expectation.... and cried fowl" and if you're looking for a proof go study differential and integral calculus :>

That's really all you have for me?
So basically you don't have a point, or any facts to try and help you prove your statement, and you even manage to toss a smart assed remark in there about how I should go study calculus (because at that point you are grasping at straws, fully aware that you can't prove any of the ridiculous claims you are making).
Comedy gold.

I wonder how many people think Diablo 3 will be much better.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
This.
Its a fun game for $20. I downloaded the trial thinking it would keep my attention for about 15 minutes and ended up playing for 3 hours.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
I think Torchlight is goddamn awesome, and I've been playing the hell out of it since it launched. I remember waiting for Diablo to launch, and each subsequent expansion and the sequel, and I'm not sure where people are getting this whole 'kiddy' thing from, unless it's the graphics.
It essentially reminds me of Diablo remade with the WoW graphics engine.
Katsma is Lithuanian for 'he who drinks used douche fluid'.
I find TL very, very fun. It runs smooth, there's lots of gear. Unlike FATE the UI doesn't make me want to take my eyes out with a spoon. The pet is a nice addition as it allows you to quickly sell stuff while staying in the dungeon and acts as another bag.
It's not trying to be anything special, and there's no reason to think it is. It does what it sets out to well though, it is a solid dungeon crawler that really does have a similar feel to Diablo.
I don't see how it's simplified though, I'd like to know where your seeing that. Because it's just "One Dungeon"? Because to be fair, the one dungeon has a multitude of floors (40+ I believe) and it changes environment as you go down, as well as increasing difficulty and there becomes more side passages and portals.
I wouldn't say this is for kids, it still requires intelligence in piecing your gear together and it really is a bloody game.

QFT.
I'd describe Torchlight as: Fate with a cross between Diablo1 and Diablo3 (not D2).
The overall feel of gameplay is very much the same as in Fate, not as deverse in character developement or creation but still just as enjoyable. It has everything Fate had, just revised and simplified versions of those features. They also added the ability of spells for your pet.
It is like D1 with the scenario. There's a town, with a vast dungeon below, and an ever growing unknown evil force to defeat. BUT I will simply say the game does not end there, there are still more things/places to explore before you retire your character.
If you do some research on D3 and what new features it will offer, you will see a lot of those things present in Torchlight (but done much better in my opinion). Things like interactive environments, and monsters able to crawl out of anywhere and everything.
D3 currently only offers 3 classes as well with more to release in an expansion at a later date, but without the ability to apply your own stats as you level up (apart from skills), making replayability very questionable for us Diablo veterans. This is something Torchlight addresses and does not apply, they allow complete customization of any spells/stats.
Although one thing Torchlight is lacking, is that it does not seem to fully support the randomly generated dungeon aspect. Which is a shame since they did it so well with Fate. There are of course some random dungeons in the game, just none the main places which pertain to the story. The only apparent random generations come from phase portals, a quest giver in town, and dungeon scrolls bought from an npc merchant.
Many of the floors of the main dungeon seem to be random too, as I have rolled a second toon to check it out and found that it is different.

My expirence with a 2nd char showed the opposite, any floors that were actually memorable were exactly the same. I'm speaking about the ones with secret areas, and ones tha required levers to be pulled to open up passage ways.
The rest are pretty hard to tell if they are random or not. Without comparing each floor side by side on two seperate games/pcs it'd be difficult to notice.

I've definately seen layouts re-appear at some point. However, I'm not sure this is the case with all maps. Whether the layouts themselves change, or the order in which they appear is different, I don't know (Seems the latter to me so far).
The bottom line is that you are expecting more out of this game than it is intended to give...
Just like people do with every MMOG, game, movie, etc that ever comes out. It is apparently supposed to be everything for everyone, but no, it's really not. Enjoy it for what it is, or don't, but if you don't then do not waste another second of your time on it.

While most floors are randomly generated, some are static and will be the same every time.
I've just bought it after playing the trial and i'm having so much fun with it. Such a fun game to pass the time and I might even try modding after i've learnt a bit more about the game and stuff.
After playing the demo for torchlight on steam.... and then closing out of it once reaching the max possible level on the demo (which was 7) then opening up FATE (a free demo comes with 'My HP Games') the difference is VERY unheard of.... these two games are more alike than any 2 games ive played before... But honestly i enjoyed both FATE and TorchLight even if it was just the demos.... but i wish it was an mmo so all your hard work wasnt pointless and you could show off to people oh well totally worth buying just to have on the side cause even the best games get boring and this is one to refer back to more than just once.
Think of the single-player game as more of a "taster" of what they hope to bring with the MMO. Reading the Runic Games interview on MMORPG.com gives an insight that they want the general play-style of the MMO to match the simplistic and action-packed nature of the single-player game.
With that in mind, you could use the time until the MMOs release to work out which style of play in the Torchlight world suits you best: Melee, Ranged, Caster etc.
Ultimately though, Torchlight's single-player incarnation is just a simplistic way to kill some time. With the variety of dungeon layouts, enemy spawns, skill spec paths and fan-made mods that are available, it has a grand amount of potential.

i find this game great fun, i picked it up at steam's holiday sales for 8 bucks (it even went for 4 bucks one day). I just reached the 1st floor of Shadow Vault with my lvl 37 alchemist. Gonna roll an alt soon i think.
