I've never played it before, but I'm looking for a something new to play. I liked WAR, and DAoC sounds really awesome. I just want to know whether it is so old/empty that it isn't even worth a try? Any responses would be great.
Yes, it is worth a try. The user interface is somewhat complicated and dated, it takes a little time to get used to. But once you get familiar with the controls and the user interface, the game is extremely fun.
There are, on average, between 1500 and 3000 players on the Ywain cluster, depending on the time of day and day of week.
You can check the populations of the servers/clusters on the Camelot Herald on the right side of the web page (there's currently more than 2700 online right now). Lots of other great info on the Camelot Herald.
If you can get familiar with the game, it is very rewarding and fun. Keep in mind there are a lot of players using heal bots, so you might want to buddy up with someone who's got heal bots unless you want to start a second account.
Others have suggested joining one of the later Ywain servers, 3 - 10, because the housing plots have been consumed on Ywain 1 and 2.

The game is nothing like WAR in any respect, really. If you can look past the archaic movement/combat scheme, there is a rich and rewarding game unlike any other to be discovered. The PvP is an acquired taste, really. Most people look at my funny when I say I didn't really care for the RvR nearly as much as the PvE in DAoC but the group dynamics combined with the non-PvE afterthought (like WAR) made it very enjoyable. There's 40+ classes so you're bound to find one that is right for you.

Hey hardanger... I honestly and unequivocally believe this game is worth a try.
When I first tried it (just to see what it was about) I was immediately turned off by the movement (which feels a bit clunky but you get used to it) and the interface.
However, someone on this forum recently posted another player's homage to DAoC and what it showed was a huge open world. Well, that is something that I really like. So I downloaded the game again and I have to say that I'm really impressed.
If one can put their mind at a different time with regards to graphics (so more morrowind over oblvioin) and look beyond what might be considered quirks the game is great.
But it doesn't quite hold your hand so you have to go into it with the idea that it is what you make of it. Now granted, I only have a good day of playing so I don't have years of experience, but given what I've seen so far I can easily imagine that the game will deliver for me as I really want an open world to explore. There also seems to be a lot of depth in character customization.
Though there is a part of me that is nervous about gimping my character but perhaps that's part of the fun of it.
Also, as a little preadvice, when you speak to npc's in the tutorial, do not just read the quest part and ignore the "how to do this" part as I had issues when it came time to use a potion and I couldn't use it in a way I was used to.
Also, when you speak to npc's you will see links in the dialogue that of course lead it to other dialogue choices. I mention this because there is a npc who will tranport you to other places. I clicked on a link which I thought was going to lead to antoher dialogue choice and instead was whisked away while I briefely saw some dialogue that said I wouldn't be able to come back to this area until much later. I then ended up somewhere else.
Since I couldn't figure out what just happened and wasn't finding a away back (and since I was so low lvl) I just remade the character.
So just be warned about clicking on links when talking to trasporter npc's (or whatever they are called).
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
It can be hard going from a newer game to an older one, so you might not like it as much as War. I enjoyed Daoc and was majorly disappointed with War. I found it inferior to daoc in every way.
I loved DAoC back in the day and I suppose much of what made it great is still there, it is an older game but worth a try i say the only reason I dont play (and i really want to) is that I want the old DAoC which is long since gone but if you dont have that attachment to the old DAoC then you may really love it. As for its population it is lower than it was by far granted but so I understand they still have enough going on to keep the game alive.
I know it wont happen and I know people are tiered of hearing it but please give us the Origins server . . . . I have money will pay
Oh I'm so tired of hearing the same replies to these kind of questions. Is it worth a try? It's old. It was an awesome game. But no, it will never get back to those "good old times". The game has to be redone, completely. DAOC as it stands now is dying a long slow death. Yes we know everyone would love to be able to get back into it like they used to - but that's IMPOSSIBLE and we all know it. We need to just stop playing the old game completely and let Mythic either decide to let it go free to play or kill it completely. If they don't care about it then we shouldn't either. These kind of responses remind me of someone sitting around in their old age wishing they could be young again. Ain't gonna happen. Nada. Negative. No can do. Sorry.
If Mythic really wanted to bring DAOC back, they need to be serious about it and start on DAOC 2.

Im extremely impressed with the game so far, and as for the graphics, hell they look better than half the games coming out today.
