All this EQ2 misinformation

Where to start....

First of all, EQ2 is NOT tanking, it never was. 300,000+ subscribers is hardly tanking. Second, heroic opportunities and the overly-chaotic engine are a GOOD thing, as they permit much more that can be implmeneted into the combat system in the future and GOD I sure as hell don't miss sandwhich-combat. Third, IoR is a good addition to the game as EQ proved in the long run that if you don't make a game newb friendly then it becomes much harder to attract new people and, the funny thing is, that a lot of people don't realize that YOU CAN SKIP IoR by just going to the docks after the first little portion.

Now, I will say that EQ2 is a bit closed off, and a bit linear; however, if you pay attention to the terrain, the large majority of it is quite detailed, unlike the majority of the EQ1 terrain. I can definitely say that I don't miss the old style world. The only thing that I truly think that isn't designed as well are the cities, and namely because there just aren't as many, and there isn't the same character. But, the thing I really respect about what SoE is trying to do is that they are actually trying to do something somewhat NEW. Yes, it's a grind, to some extent ( although, if you are a heavy soloer/quest you could beg to differ), and yes the game does have its bloody flaws ( tradeskilling a little bugged and the art team really needs to learn to design armor better), but the mere progress they have made in the last two months is unequaled. Never have I seen a game that has pushed out so many fixes AND extra content in such a short period of time. And, hell, they are adding two new raid zones and an assortment of other things next patch! They are trying to keep persistent content, and implementing the fixes as they go. The people that played EQ1, as I did, and keep comparing it to EQ2, drive me mad.

Regardless of how much endless fun EQ1 was when it first came to be: IT'S OLD, IT'S DEAD. The funnest part of old EQ was twinking, frankly. Get a fungi, a CoF, a white dragon helm, etc etc, make a monk and pwn everything. But, you can't even do that anymore. Raiding is a job now, nothing more. EQ2 has a much more intense combat system, more ways to be immersive (regardless of how somewhat flawed they are), and it hasn't even released an expansion yet. I truly think that EQ2 has amazing potential, as it is not leaving anyone out. Eq1 was bland until Kunark came out. Lets at least see if this game can produce another Kunark, unlikely as it is, because just like old EQ1 world, they were just laying a foundation for something much better before they had any expansions.

You talk about EQ2 misinformation. Aren't you doing the same thing you are against by saying EQ1 is " IT'S OLD, IT'S DEAD."

Everquest is no longer Everquest, it's "hey I can farm OoW and get elemental then hopefully i can get a time guild and actually progress...quest". Originally EQ1's world had a ton of paths you could follow but then they all followed the "getting keyed" formula and expansion after expansion there was nothing new. Velious was the apex of the game and after it everquest was dead. And, when I say dead I don't neccesarily mean no people playing it, as much as I mean there is no life left in the damn game. Monotinousquest is more fitting.

I started playing EQ2 at release, and left it for a couple of months soon after when WOW hysteria hit. I leveled into the 40's in WOW and started missing the EQ2 world and my EQ2 character, so now I'm back. For me, the group dynamics in EQ2 are much more subtle and challenging, and it feels far less linear than WOW. Comparisons aside,  EQ2 is evolving rapidly, and, like the original poster, I think this game has tremendous staying power. I plan to play Guild Wars to get my pvp fix and EQ2 for high-quality, immersive, and challenging PVE. It's amazing to me that EQ2 gets so thoroughly disparaged on these boards and on the all-important hype meter. I'm a casual player, and to me, EQ2 isn't casual player unfriendly, as long as you are not obsessed with attaining instant uberness. I'm enjoying the journey.

I agree with this. Being a casual player myself, I think that many people complain about the 'grind' or 'solo unfriendliness' of some games because they want to level as fast as they can (just my opinion). I think the number of people that actually stop and 'smell the roses' per se, while they are playing are in the minority.

A lot of people who post here are used to buying a box game, making a half-assed effort and then plugging in cheat codes to get to the "end game" fast, then moving on to the next box in a month or two.  That just doesn't work with this kind of game ... eventually they'll get the message ... maybe.

Excellent original post. Good job at summing up alot of those points. The beauty of EQ 2 is even if some current MMO fan's don't like it, the stuff is there for people all new to gaming in general can come into the game and get up to speed alot faster and have a basic understanding without so many of the pains we all felt when we started playing. I remember when I first started EQ 1, I closed that game so many times before I finally decided to tough it out and figure it out alittle.

The only thing I can't agree on is your comment that its a little linear. I cannot for the life of me see how its linear in any way shape or form. I just hit Armor Quest 4 and now I have to go back to zones I was in long ago to get to a dungeon that I now have access too from down below or peat bog. Antonica is huge as well as Thundering Steppes, Commonlands, and Nek Forest. There are zones within zones all over the place, new places to be found in old discovered zones. I just don't see linear anywhere in this game. If its feeling linear, my suggestion would be to see if your just stuck in a rut of not knowing where to go, get in a group thats going somewhere new.

    Good gaming,

I like the progression, I just think that you are forced from from one zone to the next, via keys. This formula was very problematic in EQ1 post-pop. I'm mainly just hoping that history doesn't repeat itself.
