Need some ideas on classes

Roche7Roche7 Member Posts: 89

Background info: Wife and I have played EQ, WoW, FFXI, and Lotro. Wow ended up being to casual and lacked options for alts. FFXI we run into the problem of not causal enough but lots of options. Lotro is a decent fit for our playstyle but race and class choices suck. We are hoping EQ II will fit better.

I loved Bard in EQ, Paladin in WoW and Nin in FFXI. I like heavy armor, being able to melee and casting. I love tanking but also love support roll (see EQ bard). The wife enjoys healing mostly, casting over melee, and also enjoys support classes.

We play mostly as a duo, few hours here and there. Tend to group/raid a bit on weekends when we have more free time. I would say 90/10 split, duo/group(raid). More than likely we will be playing good but evil may be an option.

We will probably play a few classes each to get an idea but is nice to have some background to give us a little direction. All that being said.....

 1) If she wanted to go for healing, what are the best options?

2) Is there any class that mixes healing and support and is not poop?

3) If I wanted to tank, what are my best options? Lets say there is a big scary dragon that wants to rip my face off, which tank is going to be wanted to deal with the big scary dragon(or whatever creature)? Also is there a tank that can fill multiple roles for when a tank isnt needed, Tank + damage or support or whatever?

4) I have read that illusionist and troubador are in demand for party and raid. Is that true and could we duo decently with that setup?

5) What exactly is an illusionist, like what do they do? What is their method of dealing damage?

6) We also do like to try new things and class types, is there any duo that would be abnormally good at duoing and not be hated by party/raids?

7) Is there a place where game files can be downloaded faster than from soe? torrent or something?

I should have also pointed out that my wife likes classes that are more simple. I like more complicated classes that require a lot of attention to function properly. I am also a big fan of classes that are very hard to kill, even if that means tickling stuff to death.

    1) If she wanted to go for healing, what are the best options?

EQII works a bit differently then EQ, there are 6 paths she can go. 3 for pure healing in most cases and 3 for hybrid healing /dps. There are a number of specs you can build using alternative advancement points to kind of fill any gaps she might encounter.

    Plate Wearing Healers

Templar / Inquisitor are the plate wearing healers that heal with reactives. Reactives are healing spells that apply a healing spell on a player that heals for X amount of damage every time that player gets hit.

Example: Spell heals for 1200 total, player has to be hit by a mob to trigger a cast of 120hp per hit up to 10 hits or 30secs. whichever expires first.

Templars are as close as you can get to a pure healer in terms of what you'd expect from a EQ Templar. The are good aligned Class

Inquisitor are as close as you can get to a battlemage, they wear plate, have almost the same healing power as Templars, and can spec in a little more DPS then Templars. They are evil aligned Class

    Chain Wearing Healers

    Mystics (Good) / Defilers (Evil)

Both Mystics and Defilers are Ward casting healers, a ward is a healing spell that acts like a force field in some regards.

Example: Ward cast on a player will absorb up to X amount of incoming damage before it expires or 30sec duration, whichever comes first.

Mystics seem to have the edge with DPS, but not by much. Each of the classes also have a companion, weak pet that you can command and buff up to aid in combat.

They are the closes thing to a Shaman from EQ, They also have Spirit of the Wolf to aid with Character run speed.

    Leather Wearing Healers

    Warden (Neutral) / Fury (Neutral)

Wardens and Furies are HOT (Heal over time) casting healers. These are considered regens.

Example: Healing that heals for X amount of health per tick over a certain duration, then expires.

Wardens are Healing/Defensive type healers, generally with more buffs to increase health and stats

Furies are more Healing / DPS type healer, generally with more spells to damage and buff damage stats. They have more AE damage type spells.

Warden/Furies get porting spells, that will port your group to Druid rings around Norrath.

You can play a Warden or Fury from both starting cities, good or evil. The other healers are limited to Good or Evil City factions. They are the closes thing to Druids in EQ. They also have Spirit of the Wolf to aid with Character run speed.

All the above healers also have some type of Direct Heal, you cast a heal for X amount and it heals for X amount instantly. These are all used to compliment their primary type of healing.

    2) Is there any class that mixes healing and support and is not poop?

See Above: But almost all the healers have some type of support buffs to aid your duo/group. Inquisitor/Mystic/Fury all have the ability to help with DPS. Warden/Templar/Defiler will aid with buffing stats.

Guardians are considered to be the Pure Tank class and can take the best damage in terms of raw tanking. They are use all Shield types/1H Sword/2H Swords/Duel Wield.

Shadowknights and Paladins are the Hybrid Tanks in the game. They are limitied to Shield/1H Sword/2H Sword play style

Shadowknight is cross between a Necro and Tank, with life taps, self heals and some wicked AE spells to manage DPS and aggro.

Paladins are a cross between the Templar and Tank, with Self heals and some AE's and Direct damage spells to supplement DPS.

Shadowknights have the edge in AE dps while Paladins can dish it out to a single target and some AE thrown in.

    All three wear plate armor.

    4) I have read that illusionist and troubador are in demand for party and raid. Is that true and could we duo decently with that setup?

This is correct, they are sought after for raids and parties for their support spells they bring to the group/raid. Crowd Control and Power Regen spells.

As for playing them as a duo, personally I would think you'd have issues with healing, since both classes lack that ability, also the Illusionist gets a pet, they are fairly weak and can't tank for more then a few seconds.

    5) What exactly is an illusionist, like what do they do? What is their method of dealing damage?

Illusionist is close to the enchanter in EQ, except in EQII they get a persona pet, it's a carbon copy of illusionist that cast the same spells. It's like having two of you. As you level, your persona will gain more spells that you have to supplement your dps and crowd control.

Illusionists and Coercers (Evil) deal DPS by using a combo of DoT's (Damage over time) and Direct Damage spells. They possess pets, Persona pet for Illusionist and Charm/Possession for Coercers. They both have Crowd Control spells such as Root/Stun/Mezz and are sought after in groups for such as well as power regen buffs.

    6) We also do like to try new things and class types, is there any duo that would be abnormally good at duoing and not be hated by party/raids?

Well with 24 classes in the game, the duo combos can vary, personally I say play something that will make both of you happy, but if you are looking to raid/group at the end game then I'll throw out a few.

Illusionist/Coercer teamed with a Fury with make a fair decent duo. note to point out, there are a fair amount of furies in the game depending on the server you select, so raid slots tend to be filled.

Swashbuckler/Brigand teamed with a Inquisitor would be fairly successful.

    7) Is there a place where game files can be downloaded faster than from soe? torrent or something?

Not that I'm aware of. The installer and patcher from SOE is the only one of know of.

I should have also pointed out that my wife likes classes that are more simple. I like more complicated classes that require a lot of attention to function properly. I am also a big fan of classes that are very hard to kill, even if that means tickling stuff to death.

Healers would be the easiest to play in terms of simplicity, they really have one role with dps thrown in for good measure, dps is optional.

Shadowknight sounds to me a good match for you, the are tough and dish out some decent dps, they are exceptional survivability.

Swashbuckler and Brigand are close to EQ rogues, They have exceptional DPS, can spec to be a mini tank, but lack the minor healing of Shadowknights or Paladins. They are limited to Chain armor.

Illusionists and Coercers are exceptional soloers; tricky class to play, you're always busy casting and controlling your environment.

I hope I didn't confuse you too much and this helps you out a bit. Best of luck to you and your wife.

That helps a lot, make it easier for her to pick some classes to try at first.

Looks like I will be going with paladin to start with and maybe giving bard a go but not really sure. I like classes that can do a little big of everything, even if they arnt really great at anything.  Conjuror also looks like it maybe something I would like.

As for the download time you could buy 1 box and install it on both you computers, it will be faster but unless you have a very slow line you could just have one of the computers download it when you are at work or something.

Ten you can just copy it to the other machine and install the small patcher , it will find the files so you wont have to download them twice from SOE.

I havn't seen any torrents with good seed so SOe should be fastest way unless you get or borrows a DvD.

I agree if you can wait a few weeks, hold off until Sentinel's Fate, the latest EQ2 expansion comes out on Feb 16th, that way you get the base game as well all the expansions up to and including the new one all in one box for a decent price.

Can get it here or around the net for as low as $35, just check around.

Until then, download and play the 14 day trial to get a feel of the game and classes.

conjurers are very gimp right now and one of the least useful classes.

Guard, SK and Paladin can all tank the uberhardcore dragon right.  Zerker is close behind and can probably do it to, but you'd have to be a very good zerker for it.

The closest thing you get to support healers are Inquisitors and Furies, but really healers in EQ2 are mostly healers.

If you want to eventually duo group content, the easiest way is to roll a tank and healer.  A paladin can heal a little bit, so if your wife doesn't want to be a healer, you can go pally and she can go mage.  Wizard or Warlock are the most badass, but coercer and illusionist would also make for a really badass combo as they can mezz stuff pretty much indefinitely, so you'd be able to do some some great DUOing.

It's hardest to find a raid spot as a tank, as a tank needs to be geared to the teeth and very good in order to tank.  Just FYI.
