WOW this was a waste of money

When we sent the first astronaut into space we realized that a pen would not write in zero gravity so to combat this problem we the usa spent 12 million dollars and 10 years and we made a pen that could write on almost any surface and write upside down and could even write on glass.

But the Russians just used a Pencil.

Fountain pens wont work facing up since the ink cant be channeled down the nib.

What about the carbon dust that can build up over time with the use of pencils? Not even sure about that, but this story probably isn't as stupid as it first looks if we examined it further. But what fun would that be?

I am pretty sure it was a ball point pen. I am sure this is easy to verify... I am just waaaay to lazy to google it right now. ;)

    A fountain pen could work.

It would need a small mechanist to compensate gravity(a few springs), prolly would cost from $10 to $50 instead of like $0.15 however.

The funny thing is that in the 80s, these pens sold for 200 dollars. Now you can buy them at Cracklebarrel for 5 bucks.

The pen uses a nitrogen pressurized ink cartridge with a ball point, and yes the carbon particles are a problem with the computerization on american spacecraft the particles could have been a problem, russian craft a little less sophisticated and can take a bit more abuse. But then again they do have more spacecraft re-entry incidents than the US.

I think one of the biggest scientific advances withr egard to ink pens happened in the early 80's with the Eraser Mate pens - I mean, ink that you can erase???  How cool is that!

I recall that those pens used a pressurized ink cartridge, so it also had the advantage of being able to write upside down or in zero gravity - and the pen only cost around three bucks!
