They are pretty much the same for gaming.  The i5 is better for video editing and things of that sort.  The i5 does have turboboost, which is fairly convenient if your not one to over-clock your own chip.

If you don't do any video editing I'd recommend picking up the Phenom simply because they are mildly cheaper, the motherboards that support them tend to be cheaper, and AMD sockets generally have a longer lifecycle for potential upgrades.

Dual 5770s will be faster than a single 5870 on games that support multiple GPUs.  However, it will be slower on any game that doesn't support crossfire.  Crossfire also has a lot of inherent problems that creep up from time to time in different games, which can be frustrating.  Plus if your going to crossfire 5800s you really want an overclocked i7 to keep from being bottlenecked by your CPU.  I personally recommend a single 5870, it will give you a lot less problems and your performance will be good enough to run any game at high settings and high (1920x1200) resolutions.

I'd say go with an AMD and ATI combo and a 5870, it's not worth the dual 5770 in my opinion (I have a single 5770) since you're not really going to need it for anything. Also Hexacores will be coming out this year so you might want to just by an X3 720 BE as a place holder if you have the cash to buy one new?

Actually dual 5770 won't be faster then a 5870 on any game.  The 5870 is literally twice the 5770 except for memory.  There is always a performance drop when dualing cards.

i5 !with 5870!why .the processor has direct cach access so when you build if you spec with that feature in mind(if you can)

you can get faster then anything made from amd regardless of speed(say ty to 32nm,size)

I have dual GeForce 8800's, Q4 processor, and 4GB RAM.  I run everything perfectly, and prices have gone down on the 8 series models. If you do try to go for the dual card, you may not notice much of a performance jump or anything, you might need more power or a larger fan. I recently moved up to a 1000W and an extra 120mm fan, already had 2 :P So yes, yours will be fine. just keep what i said in mind

    In actual benches..

The dual 5770 almost always beats the 5870 and sometimes by quite a bit. I don't know if this is because the extra bandwidth provided by using 2 16x PCIe slots (32 lanes total) or what but that's the way it is.

That said.. I'd still get single 5870 over dual 5770's given the choice. Better off not having to rely on Crossfire no matter how well it's working now.

The i5 750 is also the way to go at that price range of CPU. You'll notice it in RTS's but FPS's and most other games either is fine.

Go look at the benchmarks, they are marginally faster.  They aren't fast enough to be worth getting over a 5870, but they are faster.

Actually the benchmarks are marginally faster in a few games.  It has more to do with the developer or the engine then the actual card.  On paper the 5870 is a more logical buy then 2-5770.  Just because the developer fails to utilize the power or hard caps ATI hardware is by no means admission 2-5770 is better.

You can keeping clinging to your stat sheets, but don't try justifying them against practical application.

Nobody has recommended 2-5770s in this entire thread, but in day to day gaming use they are faster in the majority of benchmark worthy games..
