Only a 1 1/2 years to make a Star Trek MMO?

rickdtrickdt Member Posts: 14

Cryptic (even thinking of that company leaves a bad taste in my mouth) only took a year and a half to make a Star Trek MMo?  Really???  Start Trek?? They should have taken atleat twice that to do justice to this IP.  I bought the lifetime sub to CO so I could get into the beta for STO and played it for 4 days and never loaded it up again. I still havent loaded up CO since the first month. I guess you can say a fool and his money are soon parted but you can also say Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me, never again will I play a craptic I mean cryptic game.

This is not the star trek universe I know, everything is about fighting. Maybe this is supposed to be the mirror universe with the evil federation and the goateed Spock.

New tag line for star trek

Space.... the final battleground.....these are the voyages of the star ship Enterprise......Its mission to exploite and conqure strange new worlds.....to seek out new life and destroyed it...to boldly annihilate where no man has annihilated before...

This is true, and leaves me a bit sad about this game. I have trouble logging in now after getting Lt. commander  +3 . all kill this and that exploring is mute you can never return to a planet that you find once the mission is over so nothing to brag about finding. pretty must Pew pew. Now i know that fanbois will say its new and give it time but that is bull. i could make an MMo that way.

Look i will create this world with more monters and land , even pvp player housing and etc. etc. etc. but i need the money so just log-in pay me 15 bucks a month for two men hittting each other with a stick ( swords coming soon ) and i will update over time. that would be nuts but hey i bet i get a few fans saying " give it time , they will add more " lol...

don't forget they bought the game up from perpetual but i don't know how much work was done on it by them.  Also the use of the co engine must have cut down the dev time down some

Actually before the old STO forums were archived, there was a poster who posted what I believe to be the best STO tagline: In the grim future of STO, there is only war. Warhammer 40K fans will recognize that one.

Every article I have read, after Perpetual imploded, stated that other than some concept artwork and a few renders made using the engine (but not actually in the game), there was virtually no work done. If I remember correctly, the Devs at Cryptic confirmed this a couple times.

Even with 4-6 years of development, Cryptic and STO are still limited by their technology, engine, and toolset.  I doubt it would be much different, honestly.  Now had they licensed a capable engine, say HeroEngine or BigWorld or something, maybe that's another story.  Well, still no, b/c Cryptic and Atari would never fund that much development time.

Perhaps their biggest problem was that they tried to develop two MMOs simultaneously. Only Blizzard really has the funds to try that, and you don't see them jumping to do it; it's a case of Cryptic's reach exceeding their grasp. Instead of doing one at a time and taking the time to do both right, they decided to push out two as quick as they could.

I really wanted to like this game.  Ithink the main problem I have is how small it is.  Remember when MMO's had a bunch of different starting zones?  Everquest had what....6 different starting zones, wow had 8 I think....even WAR has alot of different starting zones.. now to cryptic.... CO has 2 and STO has one... that is small to me. I want to go back to the EQ days of one zone one instance and people had to group communicate. One of my fondest memories was highpass keep, asking to get on the list, waiting to be asked to join the group and then grouping and talking to the people while we killed the mobs for exp.

Sorry about the sentence structure, been drinking tonight.

I really wanted to lke this game but its just to shallow.

You shouldn't have expected much, I was telling people before beta how this game is going to be and they didn't believe me.

    The hype train at work.

Wait until the people hyped up for Final Fantasy XIV get the surprise.

From what I understand from STOs devs, they got a ton of conceptual artwork but pretty much nothing they could use otherwise. All of the 'screenshots' that were shown were actually renders made using Perpetual's engine, but were never in the game. I think the term used was 'vaporware.' There was quite a bit of the conceptual artwork though, and if memory serves me correctly, there was an issue with people not being paid for that artwork when Perpetual was going under. I'm guessing something eventually got worked out, for Cryptic to be able to acquire it.
