LEGO Universe: A CES Look at LEGO Universe

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com's Carolyn Koh was recently at CES. While there, she got some preview time with the upcoming NetDevil MMO, Lego Universe.

Team members of LUPs - Lego Universe Partners were on hand at CES 2010 to show off Lego Universe together with Lego and NetDevil. These are adult volunteers that are assisting Lego and NetDevil to playtest and refine Lego Universe. The team number about 50 adult Lego builders and all were invited by Lego to participate in the LUP program to provide feedback and suggestions. I met Joel Hoornbeck who was happy to show me the Lego Digital Design program, a free download that's available from www.lego.com and how it was used and integrated into Lego Universe.

Targeted at boys aged eight to twelve, Lego Universe will also appeal to Lego fans who are gamers and perhaps MMO fans who also enjoy the building brick toy. To begin with, it's a PvE world. Much like many other Lego branded games such as Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones, you take on the persona of a Lego mini-fig and go about whacking Lego monsters which break down into component parts, some which can then be used to build other helpful objects such as a turret.

Read A CES Look at LEGO Universe.

I am 27, played with lego's as a kid and I will playing this game because it lets you build with lego's.

Lol I can't wait.  I will be playing my regular MMO but this will be played as well when I want to build with some good old lego's.

It seems to have potential, I will be keeping my eye on LEGO Universe.

They keep saying it's for people who are/were into Lego's, or for kids in general, but I'm not either and I think this plain looks like a really fun game!

Where was this when I was 12?  Oh hell, who cares?  I'll still be playing it no matter my age.  A good game is a good game.

They say it's targeted at kids aged 8-12, but they all know it's really targeted at all us geeky older guys who love legos.

In all honesty though, I really hope it's going to be a cool game and not too childish.

Best thing they did was make it so there is no leveling, but sure some people will brick grind for certain amount of certain bricks.

Older players will find combat tactics limited, but it actualy matters less in many ways, same goes for levels. Its just fun for the sake of "fun". Building is where you will find your challenge moving past your 25 man raid pending how big you go.

I also like its not based purely in a D&D type world. The world is "timeless" with Pirates in the one end and a rocket you fly on in another...

The Kid in you should make the adult in you have some fun, ofcause you are bying it for kids after all.... right?

To be honest, this sounds pretty fun, as I played with legos over 10 years of my childhood... I still build some stuff with my nephew & stuff.

    My current combat tactic:

    - Press 1 button every 1.8 secs

    - Enemy dies

    - Jump up and down

I'm pretty used to "limited" :P

Im definitly going to check this out.  Im 37 and spent more time playing with my legos as a child than any other single activity outside of bicycling.  This is going to be great!

The lack of the mention of Technic pieces has me still on the wall about it.

Generic pieces are charming and all, but I would just love to build a functional stud-less 'mech and terrorize some minifigs with it.

must admit i might have a look at this . i had a big box in my wardrobe full of lego and every sunday afternoon i was allowed the bring the box down to the louge and play with it the things i built with it . i always remeber a lorry you could build from the yearly magazine . it will be interesting to see how this panesout ...

As interesting as it looks, I don't think this game is going to succeed as long as it has a monthly fee.

Im 21 now and i always liked building stuff with lego' =).  Ill be waiting to see how it comes out.  Could be a fun game to play online to just relax and build stuff.

Got to leave something for an expansion, right? :)

I think this game will be plain simple FUN from the moment you log in.

I'm concerned that this is a NetDevil game.  I have not enjoyed a single one of their products because they seem to lack a basic ability to design a fun game.  Their games sound good on paper, but the execution has been atrocious.  So I'm definitely on the "wait and see" side of the fence when it comes to NetDevil.

    You didn't like Jumpgate?

Oh wait...I'm part of a niche that did like Jumpgate...

It was a quality game. Never got the attention it deserved.

Auto Assault was a quality idea...it just didn't do things the way it needed to.
