The new Canon T2i falls somewhere in between a weighty professional SLR and a shove-in-your-pocket amateur camera. It focuses on the growing market of enthusiasts – people with a good eye but little training, prepared to spend money on their passion but not more than $1,000.
Any camera buffs? Thoughts comments on the T2i? I was saving up for a T1i, and now they do this. Of course I don't need a t2i, but how can I possibly buy the t1i when the t2 is out?
I want it!
Comments
First I've heard of the T2i... so no comment at this point. But I bought a T1i about 6 months ago, knowing full-well it would soon be outdated. And its been a great camera. Not flawless, but really great for the price.

Wait for the T3i
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
Why wait? So they can add more features that you're not going to use anyway? The T1i already added a 1080i HD video recording capability and live view video screen. Good god man, its already overpowered. Buy it now, use it now. Besides, your lenses are going to be where you put the big money for longer term investment. The camera body is just temporary. Though I admit I'm using the kit lense still ><

Its priced over quite a few DSLRs. So its really hard to place it in the DSLR-like category.
do not want!
but hey don't listen to me. The question is, what is it you want it for and is it the best solution for you?
I got involved in the dslr area and will continue there, focusing on the Nikon range. As i have a few Nikon lenses i am not going over to canon unless there is a really good reason. I am also very wary of large megapixel cameras, why would i want 18 mega pixels?
I have had the d70 for years and getting a good photo that uses the 6 megapixel sensor to its capabilities takes some considered effort. Mostly due to my technique with the camera and a need for quality lenses. I want to upgrade to the D90, D300s or the D700, not for the extra megapixels but for a viewfinder that gives better visibility and light due mostly to a better pentaprism, the better AF system would be nice as well. All enabling me to construct better photos.
Here is a 1/3 crop of what i can get from the d70, so a 2 megapixel image, which was printed up to a 10x14 inch print in which i could see and point out where the image quality started to break down. But almost everyone i showed those problems too, looked at me like i was a fool.
Nice pic. Did you use a tripod to get that shot? It's very crisp, considering the subject. Love the DoF as well.
If I'm not mistaken, the D70 is a class above the T2i series. So yeah its better, of course. As for megapixels... 6 megapixels isn't going to offer the ability to print a picture across 2 full pages of, for instance, a magazine spread at 300 dpi. 15 megapixels gets really close.

T1i only does 1080p at 20 frames per second, which means very jittery. It does 720p at 30 frames per second.
T2i does 1080p at 24 and 30 frames per second. 1080p at 24 frames per second with changeable lenses for DoF is the holy grail.
And in 6 months the T3i will give 30fps at 1080. Entirely predictable staggered technology marketing aside, I wouldn't buy it for its video features because it isn't that great. It has no mic input and the video compression freaks out with any lighting change. But if you are filming a stationary talking head for a you-tube video or something, it would be more than sufficient.

The t2i already does 30fps at 1080p. Film is shot at 24 frames per second, so that's what you really want, a camera that shoots 24 frames per second, AND has interchangeable lenses, but doesn't cost $17,000 dollars just for the body (Red One).
So, no more frames per second are needed once you can do 24 at 1080p.
The video compression freaking out with any lighting change is VERY problematic. That means no big deal for interior shots, but a terrible headache for cloudy days when the sun is in and out of the clouds and you're doing exterior shots.
As for sound, the H4N is what most are doing for that.

A little bit pricey at 300 bucks, but very cool and produces awesome sound. you just sync it up in post, AND you can use it just to capture cool sounds.
If you are seriously considering using it for video, I suggest you do a lot of research to make sure it can do what you need it to do. I felt underwhelmed by the video output, but I honestly haven't messed with that aspect of it much because I got it for stills.
It goes without saying that you are not going to get the robust video capability of a Red One from a $800 DSLR. There are a lot of videos on you-tube showing the T1i/D500 video output if that helps.
You probably know this, but remember to get a good memory card for video as the data-rate will make lesser cards fail to keep up with HD video recording.

BTW here is a fantastic review & demonstration I found helpful when deciding to buy the T1i.
At 5 minutes in, he goes into its HD video & shows examples.

New videos and low light samples:

Is there some noise in the low light shots? yes there is, but it still looks good to me.
I want one. Mostly for shooting video, but also to shoot stills. What a great combo.
