Is this game worth trying?

Not interested in opinions really, just wanting to know the bulk of what people generally think.

Thanks!

Yup correct, I'm not interested in turning this into a flame thread, hence why I just put up a poll ^^

Star Trek is one of those things where if you are a fan, you have no choice but to try it! For everyone else, it has always been hit or miss. I don't think you can really "try" a Star Trek MMO experience. I think you really have to be into it to get to the juicy parts, and enjoy living the lore.

TheKartel.com be me home. Booty be my game.

You should differentiate between worth trying by buying it, and worth trying by getting a free trial.

    BIG difference.

sorry that's not what I'm going for.

Not really, I have been a fan of the IP for nearly 40 years, but I am holding off on buying it until about the six month mark, when i will give the free trial a try. If I like what they have managed to improve by then, then I'll get it; otherwise I will just walk away.

Since you must of missed open beta I really suggest just waiting for free trials or someone to give out buddy keys before you go out and spend 50 bucks.    I'd list my reasons why but its pretty easy to research the various opinions of the game on this website.  While there's a few die hards here that rave about it most have mixed or negative feelings about the game atleast at this website.

That's exactly why I like it. I like being able to name my own ship, work with my crew and live the life of a Starfleet officer. Many posters on this board have tried every MMO in existence and have their own preconceptions of what a game should be and if the game takes a different approach or throws them too many curve balls they automatically hate it. Others like it a little too much and defend the game to the point that you would think there was nothing wrong with it. That's why I always say do your own research and decide for yourself. The official website has its own faq page and if that isn't enough there are many videos available on youtube.

Just curious how you can be an 'officer' in STO when your character after doing the tutorial area is made a "captain" and you can't walk around on ship etc etc.  I dont think STO gives any sort of curve balls especially if you'd played CO.

I'm not saying STO is a bad game...it just isn't the type of game I feel is worth paying 50 dollars for then an additional monthly fee.  But thats because everyone likes something different from their gaming experience.  Being able to make my own uniforms, race, and ship isn't enough for me to pay 15 dollars a month.   Maybe in a year or two when the universe has expanded a great deal and certain things like crafting and ship interiors are flesh out more I'll give it a try again since I didn't totally hate the game.

Just to note this is all my own personal opinion.   It doesn't make me a hater or judgemental.

I would agree to this. In its current state the game is in no way worth the initial cost and 15 bucks a month.

But if they add ALOT of content, crafting worthwhile, end-game and/or PvP that is more than battlegrounds then maybe the game will be worth it because the combat is actually fun.

You are not granted the rank of Captain upon completing the tutorial. You are granted the rank of LT and you are the senior officer on deck of your ship, therefore you are captaining the ship. That is completely consistent with the lore of the show and there are episodes of the show that support this.
Far as walking around the ship, I could care less about visiting ten forward or seeing what my quarters are like. If they were in game I would "maybe" visit them once and that would be it. Granting a promotion to my ensign, making sure that my away team is well armed, working together with my crew to accomplish an objective is far more immersive to me than any "interior" could ever provide.
There are obviously many curve balls for some of the people bashing the game because some of the content in game you have to find on your own and this seems to throw them off when criticizing the game. Saying the game is all combat is false when there are many missions involving finding strange anomilies or new planets.

Um... ok, I really like the game. But it's not for everybody. Some people really it hate it. So your question is depends on the player. For a specific player if you wanted to have discussion about what kind of games you like, and what kind of expirience you want from STO... THEN I could tell you if it's worth trying IN YOUR CASE. There is no good general answer to that question.

If you check my post history, I have arduously defended the game, and reccommend it to several people, while I have recommended that several people NOT try it, because it seemed to me they be happier in EvE or something else like that.

    Active: WoW

    Semi-retired: STO

Fully retired: UO, EQ, AC, SWG, FFXI, DDO:EU, PoTBS, AoC, EvE

Tried: EQ2, Tabula Rasa, Auto-Assault, Isteria, LotRO, Wizard 101

    Looking forward to: Star Citizen

I think the game is a failure. If you want advice, get a buddy key and try it out for yourself - make up your own opinion. That is the only way to know FOR YOURSELF.

  • Valgar1Valgar1 Member UncommonPosts: 324

Its CoV/CoH with space ships.  If ya really want to spend money on this id wait about 3 months, also try to get a buddy key first. I pre orderd and am sorry i did...

If you want carpal tunnel syndrome, this is the game for you. Their idiotic implementation of weapons firing is reason enough to never, ever play this game.

I judge the game to be about 0.25 a next-gen MMO, 0.25 an current gen MMO, and 0.5 incomplete.  Judging from CO I'd recommend not ever trying it (they will gouge you for money in any way they feel they can get away with), but if you really are curious then I recommend waiting for a free trial.

Disappointing.  I'm not sure when a good Sci-Fi game will come out until Star Wars* (and that will probably not have ships at release).  Anyhow, I'm pretty much waiting for a true next gen MMO so right now i have my eye on FFXIV and SW: TOR.

*I'm pretty confidant this will be really good, given the dev time and dev team.

Okay, I'm going to stop you right there and say that my post wasn't hostile and in no way shape or form was I accusing you of anything, but since you decided to hurl insults at a post that was meant for civil discussion I'll shut it off right here. See ya....
