Yeah and if those include trial accounts, then those don't count. No one pays for a game and just goes to level 10. And you really can't decide a whole lot about the game at that level. And they're not WoW "players". They're tire kickers fell victim to a slight case of ADD. Nothing is going to make them happy unless it's an MMO that transform from let's say, GW to Runescape, then to WoW and then to Aion and so on at 1 minute intervals with 10 second clips of Walker Texas Ranger in between.
I don't think that's particularly surprising, when WoW launched it was reasonably new and different but now? Blizzard have admitted that they are using Cataclysm to address some of the issues with early content, and have made it significantly easier (read less tedious) to get through the initial 10 levels already by making characters tougher to reduce quest difficulty.
It also wouldn't surprise me to find that those stats are true for a lot of more established games, and even some of the new ones too.
And as much as I like WoW (and I do) the principle of the game is... run, collect, kill and get marginal improvements on your abilities (most of which look very similar) all the way through to lvl 80. At lvl 80 run, collect, kill and get marginal improvements on your clothes and weapons which make marginal improvements to the abilities you have, without changing their look and feel in the slightest.

Yeah it is pretty much cut and dry especially now. And it's direction has focused more on casual gamers who don't have all the time in the world. Although as much as WOTLK was kind of fail, I did love the storyline added into the game. Like the CG and quest in Dragonblight when you get to roll with Lady Sylvavas. I haven't done it on the Alliance side though. I don't like my MMO to be too linear but it is nice to have something draw you in more like a good storyline. Which is why I started playing RPG's so long ago.
Well, I think that is a shocking bit of news. I made it past level ten on my free trial. It seems strange that so many people give up on the game without even giving it a chance. But what do I know? I stopped playing it and have a new MMO that I obsess over.
I wonder if Eurogamer took into account all the gold farmers and account sellers that make temporary accounts long enough to try and sell their wares then disappear? They don't seem to be very reliable considering some of the misteps their reporters have taken in the past like that entire fiasco with Darkfall which is just pretty darn funny.
I always figured the percentage of trial accounts that never get past lvl 10 or near it was pretty large but not that large.
I never got past level 50 when I played WoW. I got bored by the time I got that far.
Dude your avatar cracks me up. What is that?
It's from Minami-ke, they are playing this game based off this TV drama.. But yeah that part is just making fun of how horrible Resident Evil's controls are. I always crack up watching that. But here is a clip showing more of that game.. www.youtube.com/watch
Honestly i didn't see the "new" but game has not change that much so that stat is irrelevant. It makes you wonder how much of that 11.5 million is past 30-40.
The article is right though. Say what you want about the game but to still have 11.5 million subscribers even after a 30% retention rate, Blizzard is doing something right.
Hardly surprising. 5 year old mmo with unchanged starting zones. This number will only climb with time if they don't update the old world, which is exactly what they're doing in the next expansion.
I don't see that this has anything to do with the current player base or alts, as they only mention the retention rate of new players.

^^ I think Blizzard has the last laugh, because no matter the statistics, they have the biggest game and are making bank.
Blizzard has revealed that only thirty per cent of new World of Warcraft players make it past level 10.
OF NEW PLAYERS. And you need to realize with the amount of botting, hackers, gold spammers, etc... That 70 percent means nothing. Only maybe 15% I would say of that 70 is real players.

Yeah its a pretty funny series. Im still on season 2 right now, Ive been kinda side tracked watching samurai movies.
Does not surprise me at all. Blizzard advertises in the mainstream and gets alot of people trying the game from outside the genre. Most of those people that havent played an MMO try WoW and say "meh" no thanks )
Without saying what the time frame for 'new' is, and without saying what that 30% is 30% of, the news while sounding bad, doesn't actually provide any information to make conclusions on.
A lot of factors would skew the results making it impossible to take the OP's headline at face value.

Actually, for a game as old as WOW, a 30% retention rate of new players is quite good.
To quote a study done about EVE Online from a few years back,
"The figure shows some startling trends in that as the game has matured, it has become
increasingly more difficult to keep new players. After starting with extremely high retention rates, the one-month
retention rate for EVE Online decreases steadily to around 25% after two years."
So overall the results aren't surprising. What is even more interesting is the 2nd item in the conclusion of the study,
"This paper has provided the first, long-term analysis of a popular MMORPG. Our results show that (1) its workload
is highly predictable in the short-term, (2) content updates have only a slight impact on subscription growth and player
usage, (3) player churn increases as the game matures, and (4) intersession times provide a reasonable metric for identifying
players that are about to quit."
Everyone says Cata will bring the masses back to WOW and that might be true for the short term, but looks like over the long haul it might not have nearly the effect people are predicting.

So that's why they are redoing the old lands in the next expansion. They are trying to raise the retention rate.
It said 30% of NEW players.
I never got past level 50 when I played WoW. I got bored by the time I got that far.
What do you expect ?? the old starter content has been untouched the last 5 years. Just wait to cata.
I had to laugh.

I have 5 or so alts under level 10 on my main server, and I have a ton of level 1-5 alts on servers friends play on.
I can assure you 90% of the people I know do the exact same thing.

Are there any new players left that haven't tried WoW?
