Blade & Soul: Closed Beta Begins in First Half of 2010

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

MMOsite is reporting that Blade & Soul will be entering Closed Beta even earlier than Guild Wars 2. Indeed, according to the MMOsite report, Closed Beta for Blade & Soul will begin sometime within the first half of 2010!

Also mentioned in the MMOsite article is a quote from NCsoft CEO Kim Tae Jin, stating that console versions for both Blade & Soul and Guild Wars 2 are being developed in parallel to the PC version:

"Blade and Soul and Guild Wars 2 in the console version are under development. The console market is deemed suitable for release and will allow parallel development."

What console or consoles can we expect to see Blade & Soul and Guild Wars 2 on? No one knows at the moment, but we've certainly got our ears perked!

I'm still not sure about B&S. The graphics look astonishing, but it's too much martial arts for my likings :(

About the coming CB... I guess it'll be only for Korea again (much like Aion), and at the end of 2010 they'll start translating the game to English..?

Just a warning for fans not to get their hopes up over these announced console versions.  Champions Online was designed as a console game for Xbox 360 from the very start, but it still not has been released on that platform.  The reasons are related to business, rather than technical issues with a port (there is no port, it was written for 360).  It is easy to pick on CO and say the delay is because the game is underselling and is just not good, that maybe true, but I think it is much more likely that Microsoft is strong-arming Cryptic about the subscription issue.   Cryptic has already confirmed that the servers will not be cross-platform between PC and 360.  They still actively confirm the games eventual xbox release, but who knows at this point.

I know it is just one game, and is not much of a datapoint, but if CO was designed for 360 from the very beginning (it was originally Marvel Universe, with Microsoft as a publisher) and still didn't make it, I have to wonder about whether GW2 will make it to consoles.  ChampsO consolified its menus, controls, and is even exprimenting with a paid update scheme to look like console DLC, all invoking great ire from PC gamers, and even with this they get no cross-platform servers and maybe even no release on 360.

SquareEnix pulls a lot of weight for a 3rd party, and it remains to be seen if a primarily MMO company like NCsoft can force MS to play ball on the terms of cross-platform servers and charging a monthly fee that goes mostly to NCsoft and not MS.

As for Sony, they have discouraged ChampsO from PS3 for obvious reasons, and I don't know whether they would take a similar approach to NCsoft as an MMO competitor.

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

Final Fantasy? Also ArenaNet said, if I remember correctly, that wish they could have got Guild Wars 1 on to the console market. So who knows how Guild Wars 2 will work out on the consoles.

i hope there will be no GW2 on consoles

everyone knows that console MMOs are fail

GW2 is NOT being developed for the console. It seems to be a mistake, although Arenanet have a small team exploring the possibility as it is stated in this link.

NOOO console, just servers to delay the launch of the game and open window to new bugs

    now: GW2 (11 80s).
    Dark Souls 2.
    future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
    "Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

To the one guy, console MMOs aren't really fail. In fact, more people play FFXI on consoles than on the PC, last I heard.

In any case, this is a tease.

No offence, but I can't see FFXI other than a console MMO. Playing it with keyboard gives me a huge headache :s

I've bought a PS2 style controller for my PC only to play FFXI. I use the keyboard only for macro editing and some easy shortkuts (and chat of course), but aside from that, I'm playing FFXI with the controller.

For this reason I doubt that B&S and GW2 will be successful on a console. Both games look too complex to pump all skills & functions into a controller.

Blade & Soul looks like it would be PS3...

I hope they both are PS3

It doesn't matter, because probably there won't be West servers at release, only months or even more than a year later.

Now GW2 will probably be a worldwide release as it comes from a West developer.

Consoles? That worries me as it requires a quite simple gameplay.

    console means simplified games.

Seems likely and might show that Aion is not doing to good.  From B&S interviews from the past their released dated seemed to hinge on how well Aion did.  They said they hope aion keeps going well so they can get even more development time.

As was said before, ArenaNet only has a small team researching the possibility of makingGW2 for consoles. Right now it is 100% being developed for PCs.

For Blade and Soul? Shrug....it does have a mortal kombat feel to it, maybe it would work as a console game.

Consoles? Since when did NC even thought about making MMO's for a console. I find that console imports are a waste of time and development. Keep the MMO world straight PC and the XBOX/PS3 fanboys directed to Gamernook.com.

Getting too old for this $&17!

Of all the popular MMO franchises, Guild Wars would arguably be the easiest to port to a console. The inherently limited skill loadout that is integral to the appeal of Guild Wars makes designing a console-friendly control scheme much, much easier. If you have only 8-10 skills available at any given moment, any modern console controller easily has that many buttons, and you could make it more accessible by just using the face buttons, and then assigning a trigger as an 'alt' key, leaving the other shoulder/trigger buttons for other things like activating strafe and camera-mode.

Well, if you want to keep playing shitty games, MMO's shouldn't come to consoles.

Me on the other hand, would like to play actually good games for a change.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

    Please check your sources.

MMOsite is not a games news portal, it simply aims to get as many views as it can by fabricating interesting stories. There was ZERO mention of a console version of Guild Wars 2 or Blade & Soul by Kim Tae Jin, all he ever said was simply that they are looking at other platforms for future games.

Since this rumor began to spread, the ArenaNet community manager Regina Buenaobra has posted this clarification:

I just want to reiterate that the development team is fully focused on making GW2 the best PC MMO ever released. We have a very small team exploring the possibility of console, but there are no definite plans for a console version at this time. The core of Guild Wars 2 development is fully focused on delivering a fantastic PC MMORPG experience.

So please, please check your sources. Particularly when they are sketchy looking ad-covered websites with zero credibility, and providing no source for their information.

I don't really understand why people argue a console mmo will be simplified. FFXI was a console mmo, that game has as much depth as any other mmorpg.

I think going to the console market is a good thing for mmorpgs. A controller setup works better for certain styles of play.

It's simple: good MMOs should give you HUNDREDS of choices any given fight/social situation/exploration scenario, etc.  Choices.  It's key.  With a keyboard I have 100+ keys, with 100 more SHFT-combos, 100 more ALT-combos, etc.  That is, I can participate with the virtual world is a very, very interactive way, where I can make complex choices based upon my keyboard input any given second.

With consoles you can't do that .  Yes yes, fanbois, zip it, I know many consoles can accomodate keyboards.  But most players don't use them, and console MMORPGs therefore won't be coded to utilize them.  Therefore, console MMOs have to allow players a MUCH MUCH more limited input/interactivity with the virtual world.  And that, comrade, is a strictly limited choice set thrust upon me.  No thanks.  I'm done playing Pac-Man.  Whacka whacka whacka....
