    this is wrong as cryptic is offering a cash shop it is not required to even buy a single item from the cash shop if you dont want to but here you are making it sound like its being forced upon players i believe its you who needs to do your homework.

    I didn't say they were forced too; however when you exclude entire races and offer them on your cash shop the day the game launches when it should be included in the actual game that's just greedy.  Just like they are offering up content in the cash shop in Champions Online to fill a content gap that existed within the game because they rushed the game out to release...  But, let's not derail this thread into a rant about Cryptic.  The point was that they got backlash for it, which I feel was accurate enough.  A lot of people including me aren't going to buy the game because of it, and I know a lot of people who preordered the game and don't plan on continuing their subscription for the same reason.

    There is a bunch of people who find it unpleasant to pay for stuff in games, but let me tell you something if u are the one that start making faces when someone say: U need to pay for this...
    When u get Free Servers, Development Teams, Net Bandwidth, and so on, for FREE!!!!! then ask for that stuff for free, or little cost...
    There is a rumor around that some mmos, are going to sell the content update patches... [mod edit]... but here is where my 33mhz brains gets in...
    Ultima online = almost 15 bucks (13) ----- 1997
    Lineage = 15 bucks ----- 1998
    Everquest = 15 bucks (14.99)  ----- 1999
    Anarchy Online = bucks ----- 2001
    Galaxies = 15 bucks ----- 2003
    WoW =  15 bucks ----- 2004
    War =  15 bucks ----- 2008
    AION = 15 bucks ----- 2009
    STO =  15 bucks ----- 2010
    there is more mmos around, but i can remember at least 13 years of mmos... and the price of subscription have been 15 dollars for years!!!!...
    Now go and check the inflation rate since 1997... I dont think it have been stuck...
    My point is... with all the inflation and raising costs, the 15 bucks per month is falling short.. way short.. one day there is going to be one developer that will charge a 20 bucks or 25 bucks (24.99) sub per month, and everyone else will follow... but since raising the sub cost will cause too much scandal, they are adding cash shops...
    Lets face it people, 15 bucks per month is not enough for what u do with the game services... bandwidth usage, database, and so on...

    It is more than enough. You forget that the original price of 10 dollars (later upped to 15) NEVER represented operational costs in any way shape or form. Furthermore, the cost of bandwidth and server technology has steadily been going down, along with many mmos licensing game engines instead of building them from scratch, the price for everything has been going down, not up. Besides, old games like lineage did not charge you for a 60 dollar box (or digital download and initial account). We are being nickle and dimed to death over here and you think we should pay more based on a bit of econ 101 knowledge? Durp inflation... we must pay maor. You act as if mmos are operating at a loss. The successful ones aren't (wow). Certainly, cash shop games represent larger profit opportunities (one player can represent thousands of dollars a month in the extreme), and traditional mmo developers would love for all of us to accept them double dipping with cash shop and a subscription but that is nothing but a sour deal for us players. If you want to throw your money away, send some my way please but for god's sakes don't try to white knight for some greedy corporation.

    WOW sets the benchmark, no one is willing to go past it.

    In the near future you'll see either Blizzard (with their next game) or Bioware go past it with either 15.99 or 16.99 per month and everyone will jack the prices up to the new standard.

    There are essentially two types of gamers. The hardcore gamers and the casual gamers.

    The casual gamers want the game to move fast and advance fast or they get board. They hate grinds. They might only have a few hours to play each week. Even if they played fast, it would still take them months to reach the max level. BUT THEY PAY THE SAME MONTHLY FEE AS EVERYONE ELSE.

    The hardcore gamers want the game to be "harder" or "longer" and they always want more content. Being hardcore gamers, they're often better players than the casual guys so they naturally advance faster through the game. They also spend a lot more time in the game so they happily grind away and reach the max level in a week and then complain it was too fast or not enough content. These guys are a minority in terms of subs, but the majority on the forums. They are the most whiny and demanding BUT THEY STILL PAY THE SAME FEE AS EVERYONE ELSE.

    Which group do you think the publishers prefer?

    The obvious solution is for those of you that fall in to the "hardcore" group to go out into the Sun (it's actually healthy for you) and try to be more like those nice casual guys that make the publishers fat and rich.

    I was being facetious, but that's pretty awesome.
