There was a general consensus CATA would launch before the summer as the Lich King is in the final stages of survival (and even had a first world kill in normal 25 Raid).
Here is a little remark from the CEO of Blizzard at the press conference last night:
"With Cataclysm we will be overhauling the early gaming experience for players, bringing all of the content in World of Warcraft up to our current design standards and ensuring that even new players to the game will experience the best work of our development team.
This will also provide additional replay ability for our veterans players as well. In the long run, we hope that this effort will capture more players and drive continued growth. Development on Cataclysm is proceeding smoothly and we're making great progress due release in the back half of 2010."
It could mean SC2 will even be launched before CATA.
As he confirmed SC2 will get into Beta in Feb 2010. Any bets?
I posted this in the general discussion as any other mmorpg publisher would rather not publish in the same 3 months window.
I added an update later in this thread: there will be new content before CATA will be published.....

Back half can mean anywhere from July to December.
With that in mind, considering that the last major content patch came out a few weeks ago, if there is no notable content added to the game for months between now and the expansion, there's going to be a lot of bored players relatively soon.
No one says Blizzard cannot add another content patch. It does not have to be connected to the main story. Just look at the Isle of Q and sunwell before WOTLK is released.
Plus, 99% of the guilds have not even seen, not to mentioned kill the Lich King in normal modes. So there are still a lot of content to work through.
Any idea usually how long it takes from announcement till release?

There can be, but if I'm not mistaken 3.3 was stated by Blizzard as being the last major content patch before the expansion. So... it's not likely.

Icecrown is the final major update until 4.0. Blizzard has said they might do another minor update for class balance reasons but thats about it.
Sunwell was the planned finale to Burning Crusade its just that Blizzard didnt tell anyone.
Blizzard seems to like November a lot and I'm banking on a November release. Just about every release of WoW has been in November.
Still, I'd like to see Cataclysm get an earlier release. Like May.. My birthday is in May and that'd be a nice birthday present for myself =P
Fall 2010 has always been the expected launch date for CAT.
Blizzard always takes their time with their patches or expansions. Late 2010 has always been an expected date for Cata. Anyone who thought otherwise was just dreaming.

May be there is another content patch Blizzard is keeping mum about.
However, if not, i will just finish up the current content and wait for CATA. May be play something else in the interim.
Important update:
Today it was confirmed by Zarhym, there is another content patch before Cataclysm !
It will be both a PvP and PvE content patch. Something like the Isle of Quel'danas.
Because they talk about both a Pve- Pvp patch, it's probably all about the landscape dragon attacks pre launch Cata.
So that will place Cataclysm in late 2010.: Oct-Dec
Giving room to SC2 publishing window between May and Sep

WoW is well passed it's prime, too bad some players just can't pull away....
Or... maybe... those three million players find the game entertaining... ya...
(Going with 3m cause I'm not sure 11.5 is even close to what they really have, I may be way off though.)

Nah, it's just an addiction at this point.
11.5 million active subscriptions was officialy confirmed by the Activision Blizzard financial quarterly results on Feb 10th.

As a Nasdaq stock rated company the group can't give false information for its stock holders without risking prosecution.
Btw this mmorpg.com website already mentioned these confirmed 11.5 M subs too in the News forums.
Sad times for WOW haters.

Not surprising. I don't remember WOW has gone for 9-10 months without any content patch. The company who ran the most successful MMO on the planet must have some idea about new content and retention of subscribers.
