Don't get me wrong, the game is great, but there are a few things that really turn me off.
1) Game sounds- There is none. The world is like an empty pit when the music is turned off. That destroys immersion for me.
2) Thieving mounts in town- Yes, I was really unlucky in losing my mount in town. What I found out though is that for some odd reason, the thief isn't flagged grey. Why is this? No repercussions for stealing within tower range? I think something needs to be put in place so that stealing has major repercussions within starter areas only, not within player towns or hamlets (just my opinion here, you may disagree, but not gamebreaking I guess).
3) The community- Yes, I said it. The race alliance and trade channel chat is terrible. I don't want to read about Jessica Alba and how everyone and their mother want to do her, or anything of the sort. I can't think of other things that were talked about in these channels, but it gets pretty rough. Even the clan alliance channel is bad! Don't tell me to turn these channels off, why would I want to seclude myself from everyone else? This is an MMORPG, not a single player RPG.
4) Specializations- Until major specializations are in place, I will not come back to this game, period. I don't want to be forced to level up melee, magic, and archery just to be competetive with everyone else . I don't agree with everyone being a master at everything either. I know that there is a lot planned for Darkfall this year, but until this is cleared up, I'm not coming back. I don't think everyone should be able to craft everything, unless that is their main focus in the game. That bothers me. I have no problem with the stat/skill system that everyone seems to whine about, I like how it is set up.
5) Housing- I can't put a house where I want to put it? At first, this didn't bother me, and I knew about this when I purchased the game, but why? Houses should be player crafted, not rare drops (unless I'm wrong here, I've researched it, can't seem to find anything that disproves this).
You guys say this is a sandbox, but I don't really see this game being an open sandbox. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, and if specializations are fixed, and crafting is a bit more meaningful, I'll be back in a heartbeat. The pvp is great. These things need to be fixed before I come back though.

When housing is free to place where you want you get clustered housing areas where many players place there house at same spot that wont work.
Mount stealing in town so what be more carefull thats what darkfall is all about plus its SUPER easy to make a new one.
specialization is very difficult with unbalnced gameplay and we dont want classes in darkfall.
Community bad in general chat lol have you played other mmo's most mmo's is same.
I play mahirim and its not so bad i dont see any problem with chat, you can btw ignore players.
Games sounds i agree 100% we REALY NEED enviroment sounds like hearing birds wind in trees waterfall sound sea sounds animals owls that kind of sounds that give this great looking game world a real immersive feeling.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Sorry to see you go, especially since you enjoy the basic premise of Darkfall; that being PvP. To address your points:
1) I agree. Some ambient environment sounds would really help immersion, especially since everyone turns off shadows (except me) which further decreases said immersion.
2) I don't think the thieves are flagged because mounts seem to be treated like a resource rather than an outright possession. I see it along the same lines as that guy who is finishing up the metal node I started but had to run back to get a new pick axe. And, as someone said, getting a mount is simply an investment of time in resource gathering (which strengthens my personal perspective on why 'thieves' aren't flagged).
3) Whenever I speak of community, I have to separate chat and in-game actions. Sure, the RA chat is usually a bowl of retard stew sprinkled with the overripe hormones of those who haven't seen a woman naked yet, but the people in the game have been very helpful to me. I have been the recipient of not only good advice, but free armor, weapons, etc (all without me asking for any of it, btw).
4) I would like to see specializations deeper as well. This is where I think the MO concept of skill caps is, on the surface, a better approach. However, I am willing to wait and experience firsthand exactly how much specializations, as they currently exist, serve to meet a different purpose. That being said, I understand Aventurine is going to make the specializations deeper in the future.
5) Don't know about housing since I haven't tried placing one yet. I remember UO's free-for-all housing. It made urban sprawls of otherwise pristine wildernesses. I am torn between the freedom of placement and the integrity of the geography and the way the world is presented.
Anyways, reconsider. If not, enjoy the next game you go to and keep an eye on Darkfall's developments.

I may stick around for a little while longer. If specializations can be fixed, and crafting more meaningful, then I'll stay indefinitely. I just want more depth. Darkfall is a great game, I need a home to hang my hat, so to speak. There are a few other games out there, but this one has something to it, that keeps me coming back.

Free placed housing can work if implemented correctly. SWG is a perfect example.

Don't think the result of free placing in SWG was that good. Remember the house spawn while in combat to escape in safety ?
Plus it didnt matter that much cause the spawns where dynamic. Do you want to place your home next to Deathless mages spawn ? If you didn't thought about yourself there would have been enough who would place their house next to their favorite spot, while making your life a hell if you depend on tha spot for example

I agree, this is also bothering me a lot. The world has absolutely NO sounds. You are standing near a waterfall..... silence.
The game has been out for 1 year now. What are the devs thinking? Ok, there were many important things to fix and improve, and the ambient music does a good job in the immersion department. But really... no world sounds?
AV - wake up.
+1 also for the crafted player housing, and the towers shooting the thieves (NPC guards would be nice too).
I never noticed the sound thing in game. Now it's going to bother me Thanks mmorpg.com forums.
Sorry to hear you're leaving OP.
That having been said, the one thing that stood out to me here was the issue you had with your mount being stolen.
I highly doubt many long-time players, including myself, would support the idea for going grey if you steal a mount. This game takes player accountability to a whole new level, and if you choose not to despawn your mount upon dismounting then you have also chosen to take the risk of having someone stroll up and ride off.
It is simply the nature of the sandbox beast known as DF.
However, I would like to see players go grey if they take shots at your mount in an attempt to grief you. That is an issue that has long needed a fix.
Ambient sounds would be nice....but would the drawbacks be worth it?? (more for the system to do, and not being able to hear footsteps / mounts as easily) Honestly, most of the time I'm playing, twittering birds is the LAST thing I'm trying to hear.
Free-for-all housing placement wouldn't really work in Darkfall....the reasons were pointed out well by other posters above, so I won't repeat these things.
The community is rough...yes. What do you expect in a game of this nature?? Personally, I only ever read Clan and Clan Alliance chat, so I am not bothered by the rabble and their inane babbling.
Sounds to me like you need a good clan with a decent city. Darkfall really gets that "home" feeling when you have a good group of brothers / sisters - in - arms, and a city to call your own.
How do you expect to hear footsteps when you are standing next to a waterfall?
That's an immersion breaker right there. Depending on the world events - i.ex: heavy rain, storms, etc... you shouldn't be able to hear footsteps.
Aren't you the one always telling people Darkfall isn't an FPS? With no world sounds the game is just a random "shooter game".
Darkfall is an RPG world. During the daytime we should be hearing birds, etc.... At night we should have crickets and the other usual night sounds. When it's raining we should hear the rain - this stands out like a sore thumb to me every time it's raining.
Guys, I'm gonna stick around for a little longer.
I'm in love with this game, so maybe it'll be
implemented (ambient sounds) if I raise a
ruckus (poll) on the official forums.
I'll give them until next major patch
for specializations and player economy (crafting wise).

I think you will find as you play and explore that the ambience is there in a different way. It is very creepy, and has had me scared on the edge of my seat before. The weird sounds, the darkness, the creepy atmosphere of same areas really go a long way to add to the feeling of danger out away from towers.
As for the rest well DF 2010 is bringing a lot of stuff. For me personally I want dungeons more than anything. I have explored the entire world and marked on a personal map locations of very wicked looking dungeons, but the doors do not open. I can't wait to see what is inside. There is one about 1 minute from my cottage too on a remote Island.

I don't make a habit of gazing at waterfalls, typically, so it's just never really bothered me before. I'd be cool with it if they added ambient sounds....but it's just not really an issue for me atm.
Aren't you the one always telling people Darkfall isn't an FPS? With no world sounds the game is just a random "shooter game".
Not at all. Most "shooter games" have plenty of ambient sounds.....ginfire in the distance, shouting, equipment running....all kinds of racket.

I also have to wonder.....with the way AV has of doing things....how much do you want to bet that their idea of ambient sounds would be head-ache inducing annoyances??
Wouldn't that put you at war with pretty much every player in DFO?

Are you on the NA server?? I know Dark Hand Of Valor are "player protectors", who hunt reds.
My clan does....but only if they're in our territory, or bothering alliance members. Last night we got a report of twenty reds riding down into our neck of the woods, and you should have seen the ARMY that came frothing out of our city to murder them. Of course by the time we got there, alliance guilds had massacred them, but it was cool to see us all jump like that.
Of course...maybe it's just that we're looking for an excuse to fight at all times
1. I agree the game could use ambient sounds. I LIKE the idea of not being able to hear footsteps depending on ambient sounds. It would make the world more immersive and more dangerous.
2. Not really an issue for me. I've nearly had a mount stolen twice in town, but it's been my own fault. I'm not sure how they could implement this correctly either. For example, our clan will have members who hang back in fights gather mounts during battle. That's not stealing. Maybe if you jump on a mount that doesn't belong to a clan/alliance member, you turn red for a while. It stops once you've despawned the mount and it's in your bag?
3. The community can be rough at times, but it's no different than most MMOs I've seen except for LotRO and Ryzom. Those had the best communities I've seen.
4. I don't see this as an issue. I don't want classes or anything remotely resembling them in the game.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
I've wanted an overhaul of ambient world sounds since beta - I don't like walking through a swamp without hearing insects etc. But there is no way in hell that this makes me want to quit such a brilliantly fun game. I'll never understand how people can let small annoyances destroy an entire game for them, especially when it's such a unique one.
As for the mount-stealing - the moment you dismount, any player is available to mountjack and run into the sunset without consequence. The devs have always wanted as little artifical game-mechanic interference as possible, and so 'mount-jackers' should suffer player-defined consequences whereby players acting like this should be outcast or hunted. Learn to dismount in large open spaces or hard-to-reach places where there are no nearby players that can shrapnel-jump/whatever towards your mount before the despawn timer finishes. Either that or "if you can't beat them, join them". It's fun! But I recommend doing it only to vets and personal enemies. Doing it to newbies is a little low.
