We Wana Leave WoW, But We Just Keep on Coming Back!! What Do we Want then???
I know many people who are also bored and tired of WoW, for some unknown reason, and we currently are searching for new MMORPGs to replace WoW as our main MMO,,
But for some reason, WE KEEP ON COMING BACK!!!!
The reason I bring this discussion up, started when I was on another upcoming MMORPG’s fan site forum, made up of WoW Haters (Of Course) , and in most of the debates between me and the WoW hater community, I would always get responses such as “Go Back To WoW” or, “This Is Not WoW, So Don’t Try To Make It Into WoW”.
This made me realize, that there has to be something WoW does right that makes it so good, even when bored of the game.
What is that Element from WoW, that is so great, that other current MMOs and upcoming MMORPGs seem to be lacking. What can a New MMORPG bring to the table, that hooks me, and not make wana play WoW?
This is why I ask,
What do people who are tired of WoW, but want something new,,, Well What do you truly want from a MMORPG, that can finally keep you away from WoW for good?
Comments
Ive never understood those who say "im sick of WOW but theres nothing else". Why do they need something else? Is life so empty they have to be subbed to an MMO to feel complete? If your sick of the game, quit, its that simple. No other MMO's you want to play? Then dont play one. I really have a hard time getting my mind around this stuff.
When you return to the game it probably means you never got over it. Instead of trying to look for another game, just take a break from your current one. Play other games if you feel you must but just know that you are returning to the game that you really enjoy. I think the first real sign that you really didn't want to leave that other game (like WoW in your case) is when you try to add in features from that game to another game. There is nothing wrong with enjoying WoW but don't try to look for WoW in other games that you play.
I managed to quit WoW with a dollop of willpower and a new sub to LoTR. Waiting for GW2.
Cancel that sub, man. You can do it!
I have to say I agree with this.
Tro, if you really "want" to leave wow and there is nothign else you want to play then just do something else. Otherwise what you are doing is wasting your time and more importantly wasting your life.
I've never understood the people who proclaim "I'm bored but I'm playing x until y comes out".
Sends actual shivers down my spine.
as far as that other fan site you mentioned and the comments of "go back to wow", though I think in context that could be considered rude, there might be a core of truth to the discussion.
Too often i see some wow player who wants to make their new game into wow. Granted wow has a lot of features and many mmo's could benefit from them. But I do think there are wow players who are just looking for wow but a new skin. They want the same ease of leveling the same type of questing, etc.
It's ok for games to have different game play. And there are people who don't play wow precisely because they don't want what WoW has to offer as far as game mechanics.
Personally, I don't play wow because I can't stand the art design nor can I stand some of the cutsey things such as motorcycles and grenades, etc. It's just not the world I want to immerse myself in.

The problem is that we get tired of wow, and start searching for something new, or something that may bring us some interest. But that new "passion" fades quickly after seeing that somethings wow have are missing, or, in most of the cases, that the new game does not have the same quality or gameplay.
By checking my xfire data I to the conclusion that the games ive played the most after wow were, age of conan, aion, and lotro, wich are undoubtfully the only games besides wow that present a good quality of gameplay, fluidity and polish (as of this moment).*
So the fact is that, while there are no games with the same level of polish and gameplay of wow, people arent changing, and will keep getting back...
PS: * With this I mean fantasy "theme park" based mmo's
its probably because WoW is actually very good at what it does, although personally i think the PVP in WoW is rubbish, its not all there is to the game, by any means, too many games do seem to focus on a single type of gameplay, and perhaps thats the problem, focus too much on pvp and the pve'ers avoid it, and vice versa, make crafting too difficult or tedious or.. blah.. tbh, the only game i ever came across that had a really good crafting system, was SWG, though that was pre-cu... but lets not go there! (danger minefield!) WoW is casual and hardcore friendly, i know, i've seen those idiots people playing, the game dishes out enough bling to keep them coming back for more basically.... and sadly the game is noob friendly, no throwing them to the wolves like when i was a fresh noob, seriously they got it easy these days, guilds even give people stuff.. and help them with quests, rather than laughing at them and calling them noobs.. some games are just too easy these days....
I'm going to agree with some of the others here. If you really want to leave WoW, then do it. There's not anything stopping you other than you don't really want to leave.
Regarding your debates and others telling you to "go back to WoW", I agree. If you are crying for WoW gameplay in another game or constantly comparing WoW to that MMO, go back to WoW. I, for one, don't want WoW creeping into my current MMO at all, and I'm sure a lot of other people feel the same way about their MMO of choice.
You enjoy what WoW has to offer, but others like myself don't. Just because you like it doesn't mean it's doing something universally "right", just that it's doing something that appeals to you and a segment of the gaming industry.
To answer your question, what finally drove me away from WoW was TBC and arenas. Vanilla WoW had lots of spontaneous world PvP that would last for hours sometimes and the battle would meander across large areas. People didn't PvP for the loot or points, they did it for the fun.
WoW was my first MMO, so I'll always have good memories of my time there, but it turned into something I didn't want to play anymore. Look at my sig to see all the different MMOs I've tried since. The only ones to hold my interest for any real length of time were LotRO, Ryzom and now DFO.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
I left WOW over 3 years ago and never looked back. It didn't offer me what I was looking for long term so I found something else to play. That''s the only secret there is, find something else you enjoy playing, or....just stick with WOW.

Thats why I asked, What elements from WoW, do people want in new MMORPGs, that can keep their intrest.
I know for me, I want WoW's
Instant Melee Strike system (No Queue Strikes System like Guild Was and AION)
I want Many Classes not just 4 for 5 classes that take up one role to the core. I like how WoW handles Hybrid Classes. Makes them Fun and useful rather than useless.
I want Fantasy Theme, no Sci Fi/Real/Whatever theme
I want Fantasy Gear Art, not a Real and Real only system or Fantasy to the minimum.
I want 3rd Person no fps only format
I want Faction vs Faction dont care about the number of Factions as long as it balanced low number. No FFA or Every Guild For Themself system. That never has any PvP Role playing value.
Mutliple End Game format system ,, this is something I like very much about WoW, is the different End Games to choose from.
I want Classes, no Skill snadbox system. That lacks Class lore, which I like. Even DnD had Class lore in a way
WoW's Smooth gameplay is a must. No Slow Slugish combat
-----------------------------------------------------
If a new MMORPG game could come out with these things, I would most def move on from WoW and not look back.
I actually feel good being without a mmo , i have time to play all the new games coming out and even old school games like ninja gaiden I,II,III .
Am not waiting for the next mmo to come out like i used too , tried Allod's for a few hours that it , went back to playing persona3 after.
with all the bad new mmo's coming , which dont seem like fun at all , heavy instancing and all maybe you should go back to maybe old mmo's still running .
just an idea .
you return because of the people that were on the server that may or may not be still playing you dont return for the game.. if you did you wouldnt have stopped playing
WoW does (most) everything right. i played it for a while and i can't find any other MMO that gets as much right as WoW did. the PvE is great, the PvP isn't great but its not terrible, the raids are the best i've seen, nice crafting, and classes are cool and unique. just a good game.
that's just how i feel about it.
Not everyone who leaves WoW keeps going back to it because they feel it's that good. Some of us left because of how shallow a game it is when compared to Lotro, EQ2, Eve, and the likes. For some it was their first and only MMO they've ever played so they don't really know what to expect when it comes to going to something else they just feel that WoW was that awesome and that anything else afterwards is garbage when in fact WoW is garbage compared to a lot of games out there. It was a bandwagon MMO. Not saying that it's a bad game, just not as good as some others out there.
WoW is a good beginner MMO. If you are thinking about playing MMO's as a genre, WoW is a good opener for you but then you may want to upgrade to EQ2 or something. However, if you feel you are bored of it but can't find another game to replace it then perhaps you need a new hobby. People also have to remember that developers aren't aiming to make WoW clones regardless of the impression. It's all about execution of the game. There's a lot of games coming out with neat ideas they want to bring to the genre. Unfortunately, a lot of people have high level characters due to the ease it takes to get to cap in WoW so when they go to a new game they are at the bottom again having to relearn a game, relearn the economy and how to make money, and they have to work back up to cap to experience the endgame.
But most people don't want to do the grind when they start a new game and realize that they aren't the $h!t anymore. So they quit to go back to their main on WoW and blame the other game for lack of content, grinding, etc. for them leaving it and going back when most just don't want to admit that they were too lazy to actually work for cap again. But then again there's the fact that WoW was a lot of people's first MMO so they never really want to quit. Fortunately UO was my first so I don't have the inkling to go back to WoW.
I'd have to partly disagree with that.
You are very correct in that WoW is a good MMO for people to start with. But in no way shape or form is it just a starter mmo that one then goes on to other games.
Other mmo's can be quite different in a variety of ways. A person who loves what wow is and then goes on to another game might be wholey dissapointed. Not every game is as easy as wow is to level up in. WoW is a very forgiving game compared to many games out there. More often than not I see the WoW players asking for things to be different because WoW has it differently.

What you could be looking for is a real life! None of these worlds are going to ever please you, try the real one. It has the greatest graphics you will ever find.
A game that is as polished and runs as smoothly as WOW, but with more challenge (i.e. stiffer penalty for failure, not crippling though), a bit more seriousness (i.e., no joking pop references to the modern world), and less genre-blending (i.e., no motorcycles in a medieval fantasy MMO).
Right now, no other MMO runs as smoothly as WOW, so WOW is the best "stop gap" game at this time.
I am hoping that Everquest Next will deliver.
I don't come back. I did once after TBC came out but I just couldn't get back into it. Nothing against the game because I enjoyed my time with it but for whatever reason I'm just burned out on it.
The only game I find myself going back to on a regular basis is LotR actually. Although lately I have been tinkering around with DDO as well and once 1.5 comes out I plan on giving FE another go.
All 3 of those games have elements I enjoy.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

It's simple, people go back to what's familiar. It's true in life, it's true in games.
So they hate WoW, but they've spent so much time in it, it's very familiar. They go to a new game and it's different, they have to learn and figure it out so they get tired o it and quit and go back to what is familiar.
I suppose. Although I actually left EQ for WoW. Beginner game or not it had me hooked with the elements they combined from other mmos and the gameplay of the dungeons the game had.
Seemed at launch there were a hell of a lot of other EQ players running around too from what I recall. I tried both games EQ2 and WoW when they came out and frankly WoW was more fun to me. Which was rather surprising because I was an EQ fanboy and purchased WoW simply on a whim. I didn't think it stood a chance against EQ2 nor did I hold much hope for the game considering what I thought EQ2 would have available.
Although to be fair EQ2 has made a lot of changes since then.

I don't know about anyone else here...but when I quit playing wow, I quit playing WoW. I never went back, I moved on to other things. Though I'll admit there aren't many good MMOs out there, but some do exist. For me atleast. EVE online has done good at keeping me company like WoW did for so long.
