Actually enjoying this again, after trying the debacle known as STO

elockeelocke Member UncommonPosts: 4,335

So I decided to fire up SWG again for old times sake, and because they have this play for a month free for vets deal. And WOW, I'm having a blast. Partly due to the fact that after mindlessly grinding Klingons in STO for the past 3 days, and being bored to tears by the quest pop up dialogues and no true interaction, playing SWG feels like a breath of fresh air in comparison.

I am very impressed with the sheer amount of stuff to do in SWG now, what with leveling, collections, quests, Jump to Lightspeed, housing, crafting, player created questing(whole new system to "level" up) expertise trees, mounts, etc. etc.

Just wanted to say, anyone looking to try this again after so many years, you may be surprised, I know I am.

Now, to find which server has the most people on it and find some new friends.

I completely agree, came back to SWG after the same boring game-play in STO, SWG is a breath of fresh air, compared to most games on the market today. The sheer amount of variety found in SWG is lacking every where else in the MMO market.

My favorite new additions are the appearance tab and chronicler system. They just add to the choices SWG has always had over other games. Look how you want, play how you want and do what you want, if only it had  a skill based leveling system :).

Funny thing is,  I just made a fanboy post, I really can't find much to complain about in game YET. I was an on the fence hater of SWG for years to.

    Hi ,

Welcome back to SWG and glad to hear you are enjoying it.

I put some server population statistics together here that may help you choose your new home.

    Hi ,
Welcome back to SWG and glad to hear you are enjoying it.
I put some server population statistics together here that may help you choose your new home.

Thank you. Although, I'm wondering if going to a medium load server is better than going to say Starsider(high load) or one of the more empty servers.

I say this because after playing quite a few levels last night on Starsider, all I saw were tons of "Buy this/Sell that" messages spamming my chat window.

Any advice on how to talk to people in a normal conversation? Certain chat channels perhaps?

Looks like the launch of STO was to the benefit of SWG / SOE instead of Cryptic.

I also reactivated my account.  My toons were just transferred from a now closed server and I have to decide on a city to place my packed houses in, etc.  I must agree that this game has much more to offer than many I have played recently.  I am eager to catch up with some old friends and revive my SWG saga.

Good luck, I only lasted shy of 2 weeks back in Dec during the free vet reactivation.

Why is that? SWG gives out a free month and you're surprised people are trying it?

Starsider is indeed heavily populated, if you like things a little quieter you could certainly try one of the other servers lower down the graphs.

I'd recommend finding a good guild if you like chatting.

Pretty sure there wasn't a free trial in December...

It could be that soe just puts free time on the accounts.  For whatever reason I have free time on many of my accounts, long after the trial periods ended.

Thinking coming back to SWG too. Bored by STO (canceled my preorder), bored by War (wow like) bored by Lotro (moria is impressive but quests from Moria to Lothlorien ... are boring ) can't play EQ2 (heavily instanced), Mortal Online seems to be another VG/DnL, and i m afraid SWTOR could be heavily instanced too...

    GU15 is nice and fun.

    Thinking about coming back.

tried it just last week and theres just something missing I really think the only thing that could claw me back to SWG would be a fresh start server and boy would I love it.

A chance to start completely clean to slowly vuild up a fresh economy to see rescources gradually get better and see crafters make names for themselves.

I think that sense of discovery and meeting people is what I have lost and Chimaera just doesnt cut it anymore I know everyone everyone knows me i know all the town i know all the best rescources i tried rerolling elsewhere but exonomy's are so hopelessly borked that without taking a bunch of tcg loot there its very difficult to get going.

I was playing in Dec too but frigging after a few days the game becomes boring to me because it just feels dated and cheap. I can't play an MMO with an UI like that and without the profession system and the complexity of the old game, it just has nothing to hold me. Theres actual content in the game now which is an improvement but it is all the same bunker or same cave over and over again. Theres no epic content that makes your draw drop, like taking down Arthas in WoW.

It's actually quite funny how that worked out. After playing the POS STO beta, it left a space MMO shaped hole in my psychy. Left me thirsting for economy, ground combat, meaningful socialization etc. Unfortunately, SWG has all of that.

Most people on this forum know me as quite the 'digruntled vet', and I've rarely had anything positive to say about SWG in it's current form. But I have to tell you, SWG, even in it's current form, is still MILES ahead of STO. SOE couldn't have dropped a vet trial at a better time with so many people flooding away from STO with such a putrid taste in their mouths.

Yes, I'll admit it, I'm in the vet trial, and I'm actually enjoying it. STO gave me some perspective I guess. Yes, indeed I see the lag, the bugs, the dated graphics (it's actually the first time I've noticed how bad the graphics are), ah but STO gave me taste of all of the bad stuff  X 10 (except the graphics are better in STO... in space. Ground graphics in STO are atrocious). I rolled a new toon on Starsider, and I haven't been for lack of something to do (just stay away from the lagbomb that is anything to do with the GCW garbage... YIKES! Like I'm playing on dial-up from the 70's, and that's not even participating in the event, just passing by it).

Sadly, I did log into Sunrunner to check the old haunts, and indeed, haunts they all are. Ghost town. Shut that mother down!

All that being said, this is not an endorsement of the NGE, and SWG is still a shell of the game it once was.

Just saying that in comparison to STO, SWG is still better. That is really, really sad.

Will I go back to SWG as a customer? Well, I still am a h8r (according to Grampagamer) of SOE, and don't want to support their business practices (they're not quite the lesser of two evils yet, but Cryptic is giving them a run for their money). And I'm still iffy on the SWG player base. I've met some cool people in game, but I've met alot of D-bags too. And don't even get me started on the O-board community... I've never seen such a venomous, cannibalistic forum community. Somebody brings up a valid problem, and a hundred people tell that poster to shut up and leave, then complain their servers are all dead once the people with valid problems have all vacated. At least here @ mmorpg.c we can have a logical, fairly unmoderated discussion, not so much on the Oboards. That's also a dealbreaker for me.

Yea I did the OB for STO too and left thinking - needs alot more development time.  Then .....

I got my Vet trial letter and saw the GCW advert on it and thought 'Now that's Star Warsy!  So I downloaded and checked it out.

Got in on a Defend Dearic invasion and had a blast, same with a Defend Bestine.  Really cool, good battles.  Not as good as the old pre-cu one's but a very good step in the right direction.  Then I tried them and Keren again and it just hit me; new battlefield samo samo again and again over and over.  Not good for long term play.

Then came the worst moment.  I was waiting for a battle to start and a flying ewok went past me!  For crying out loud!  Keep it locked in your house if you must, but don't bring 'em to a battle!  Ahhhhhh!  Big downer.

So now I'm staying away from the battles as that just bummed me out and I'm looking at my inventory.  What's this 'Jabba's Comlink' thing?  Oh a murder mystery, well that sounds like fun.  Too quickly (and badly wrapped up) that little blurb ends and I find it's just a poorly done intro to ...... Zombies!  Deleted that quest too very quickly.

Now I enjoyed playing both the original and NGE versions.  And even payed $ to extend a trial period last year to complete a quest line, but all in all it just get's old too fast as there's not enough things I want to do / am interested in.  Guess I'll just stick to playing the free trials once a year and getting my fix that way.

As a side note: Pirates of the Burning Seas is doing a 29 day (Feb being short) Vet trial.  Wheither it was planned like SOE's after seeing STO come out I don't know but since STO was compared so often to it, it would make sense since STO's oppinion poll is running so rocky right now.

I feel your pain I think I'm falling into that very trap lol.

I've just started playing after a few years away, the new GCW update is good and getting used to everything feels like a new game at times but with the pros I instantly noticed some cons, vacant friends list, lost city, need to move to a busier server which thanks to badgers link  I now know where to go.

So now i'm busying packing up and getting ready to move, I also love that new generic house (style 2) lol.

Now with SW:TOR not open to next year, allows me time to settle in a new server in swg

All I can say is space combat in swg is still the best,   I hate the ground gameplay now but jtl has always been great

  • metatronicmetatronic Member Posts: 329

It does seem like theres a ton more to do in swg now than ever before. I actually just reinstalled and am using the vet trial for the next 2 weeks.. Im still waiting for my elder jedi and master BH to move onto a server so I can use them..

As far as I can tell the game is bringing back alot of memories and there does appear to be a ton of new stuff to do but its still in a very poor combat system.. I could tolerate the iconic classes but the ground combat still has that NGE suck to it.. Its too bad actually, cause had the original or even the CU had this amount of content, it would have never lost many subs. Even with the servers being severely merged down into what 6-8? (i never counted).. There seems like a decent amount of people online but that old atmosphere of precu/cu is gone.

Im sure ill post more about this game once I actually play my high end characters. I tried leveling a new guy and its just a grindy feeling.. You would think they would speed the leveling process along to entice new players but I guess not.. Its fairly slow specially on a toon with no credits, speeder or insight where to mission anymore..

  • NeblessNebless Member RarePosts: 1,878

They do have that questline that starts you from the tutorial space station all the way to level 80?  Kind of handholding but it'll give you credits, weapons and a speeder.  Some of it's well written, some really poor but either way it's the kind of thing you really can only do once as it's the same for all the classes and all the factions.

Quickest way to level is the 10 missions a day (only 10 cuz that gives you an xp bonus) from a mission terminal and then some grinding to round it out.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

Not that I think it's gonna happen or should happen but it would be an awesomely funny historical footnote if STO went  down as the game that made post NGE SWG a success!

  • metatronicmetatronic Member Posts: 329

Well what happened was I had 3 level 90s.. 1 jedi, 1 Bh and 1 master dancer

The jedi/bh was on naritus and in the process of being moved. The dancer was on bria. I logged on the dancer found a respec npc in coronet and respecced out of the level 90 dancer into a level 5 smuggler. I was on the ground at level 5 with no proper weapon or guidance with where to go.

I had other characters essentially level 1 who I logged into working servers but they logged into a black void lol.. I could see the character and run around but nothing was there.. I assume they just have to be deleted and remade to get to the new tutorial but honestly Im not logging in to play to grind again.. Ive done jedi the old way and my grinding in that game is done lol.. I actually grinded my extra character slot bh to 90 aswell.. So ya I dislike leveling in this game especially in the new system.. At least the old system had nice animations to watch..

  • NeblessNebless Member RarePosts: 1,878

Ahhhh the non-combat to combat respec, always a scary thing.  While I think there is a way to pick up the storyline from Mos Eisley it's not really worth it.  No matter how you cut it grinding is grinding.  As to the spacestation blackhole ....... did anyone mention there's still some bugs in the game? LOL!  Haven't heard of that one for quite awhile.

I'd just kiss off any other toons unless you're really feeling S&Mish and go with the 2 90's you have.

    Enjoy
