Why I Left AoC

Simple. No maintenace schedule. Seriously, lengthy server shutdowns on random days with little notice. I was shocked. It's an excellent game, but c'mon! Pick a day! Tuesday, Thursday...whatever! I'm  a freaking customer, $15/month I pay for absolutely nothing tangible! Show some respect!

Anyways, if you have a normal job (m-f, 9-5) check it out. It's amazing, immersive, and a great community to boot. I'll be back once Funcom gets their head out of the sand.

lol, like That's ever gonna happen ;)

I am glad that I have other things I can do so that when they do have a server maintenance day, I wont go post a "I quit" post at MMORPG.com

I am glad that I appreciate that 17 hours downtime during a major patch is compensated with 48 hours extra playtime.

There is Server status, which you can watch for updates. It's announced at least 2 days before any maintenance (except emergency patches)

    For US servers:

Op dont you think quiting an MMO over a maintence schedule is well.... shallow? Unbelievable!

(BBBBBWWWAAAAAAHHHHH cant believe op quit AOC over something silly!)

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.

I call BS.  Nobody leaves a game they love over a silly maintenance period.

no, maintenance can't be (most likely isn't) the only reason but its possible that it was "the straw that broke the camels back"

asside from giving the game much adoration, there must be other issues the op has with the game (perhaps they don't yet acknolwedge them; perhaps the adoration is part of an attempt to say "look how great the game is but if they knew what they were doing they wouldn't be so stupid here __(fill in blank)__")

I suppose it is possible for someone to care that much about a maintenance schedule (it would be nice come to think of it), but such speculations (about the op's honesty/motive(s)) are pointless, however fun.

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

Well then you will certainly not play WoW has all maintenances occurs on...

    Anyway thanks for the laugh

Not too sure I know what you mean there. We give around 24-hour notice on most downtimes. Sometimes it's shorter when it's something we need to push out now (exploit fixes etc). The downtime ETA is around 6 hours but we haven't stayed down past 6 hours on an update for a long time. We normally come back up with 2 to 4 hours (like today).  Here's a quote of the last downtime:

"The US servers will be coming down for update 1.06.2 on February 16th at 12:00 GMT / 7am EST. Estimated downtime is 6 hours."

This notice went out on February 15th.

Heh, what I find amazing is how few people feel regularly scheduled maintenance is an important factor in choosing an mmog. I'm a manager at a grocery store, the hours I work are whack. But I write my schedule. So I get one morning/afternoon a week to relax and immerse myself in a game world. Using the grocery store as an analogy, we post our hours on the door. They never change. Years ago, stores would close on Sundays. They closed every Sunday. They would not post a note on the door on Saturday saying they would be closed the next day, and then the following week close on Saturday. Why not? Because people wouldn't shop there anymore. They'd go someplace they knew would be open, and not waste a trip.

So anyways, yes that is the only reason I left AoC. And If AoC were to follow the lead of many of their competitors, and have their maintenance scheduled on the same day of the week, every week, I would return. I am currently playing a game I enjoy less than AoC because I know when it will be open. My playtime is really limited, and I love to play. That's the honest truth :)

And suppose there is a reason that mainenance has to be changed? Don't most EULAS indicate that anything might happen and that servers might just have to be taken down or that gameplay might change or that the game might change, etc?

I happen to know a few small mom and pop type stores that change their hours if they are going on vacation or if they have a cultural holiday and they need to close.

They might give us a week's notice but if I'm not around for a week and head to that cafe and they are closed I just go elsewhere and then come back again if they are open.

your reasons for leaving are yours but don't be surprised when people cock and eyebrow thinking it to be just a bit over the top.

ummm, ok. I wouldn't put Funcom, an international designer of multi-million dollar applications into the "mom and pop" category. But it's your dime.

p.s. "cultural holiday" made me chuckle :)

I left AoC becouse of this

    http://forums-eu.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=141302

and the other countless threads on Pug versus premades and it is the only thing that keeps me form coming back to AoC short of lack of accessible and meningfull PvP content. Suggested here.
