$180 isn't a small amount if your work status is unsure.
I wonder how many families have had to let go of their $15 a month mmo gaming.
Does anyone know how much the economy has affected the mmo industry?
Comments
In some extend yes i think some company's went bankrupt becouse of crisis.
And prolly some players play eather one mmo or quit becouse of crisis but overall it seems it have not hurt much mmo's yet.
Im stil playing one mmo np and play beside that still same ammount of solo games.
But maybe in greece spain portugal is different story its seem very bad there with econemy.
Hope we see soon a better future for all is my wish and i mean whole planet hehe.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Before the recession I found myself sub'd to at least 3 or 4 MMOG's per year, not only down to 1 a year.
I think it might actually be the other way around.
The current world economic situation may have bolstered MMO participation due to people having nothing else to do, especially during the winter months as the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing right now.
I might just be projecting, but that's how I see it. In the grand scheme of things, $180 is not a lot of money and can probably be found by most to provide some sort of entertainment in otherwise dreary times.

Yes it has. I used to keep one game and then several other smaller games just to fool around with. But I was laid off and quite frankly that money can go toward other things.

^^ In the same boat.
The area I live has 1/3 of the entire workforce in the public sector, which is considerably higher than any other place I've previously lived & there's little to nothing else outside of that & retail, neither of which I have any experience in.
I did have a job but it went kaput at the start of the crisis when the building of new homes went down the tubes, the industry I was employed relied on that sector heavily & well, can't get employment since, it's like 500 people going for every single position & the job market is totally the employer's oyster right now with top talent scratching around for jobs well below their prior salaries meaning being qualified for the job is probably not good enough now.
Seems the same across most of Europe, USA hell the whole developed world has similar issues right now.
Sort of. I mean subscribing to an MMOG is still the cheapest form of entertainment for my dollar. What else can you jump into pretty much 24/7, and enjoy for $15 a month? Going to one movie or buying one DVD costs more than that and only lasts 2 hours...
That having been said, I used to be subscribed to 4 different P2P MMOGs and now I've had to cut down to 2, and even that is pushing it. I own my own business, and it is entertainment retail, so you can imagine how hard this recession has hit me. It's really, really bad. So yeah, it has effected my MMOG subscriptions and play time since I have to work a lot more to make ends meet.

Down to 1 sub only pcm, keeping it that way, and if GW2 can offer an even cheaper alternative, I'm taking it. F2P games with cash shops are strictly off limits.
Lol I thought you were talking about the ingame economy.
No, the real economy is not a problem, I actually have 2 accounts.
On the other hand the awful ingame economy pushed me to hit the cancel button more than once.

Now Playing: Skyrim, Wurm Online, Tropico 4
Waiting On: GW2, TSW, Archeage, The Rapture
It has definitely affected me...I have moved up from 1 subbed MMO to 3 subbed MMOs, as they provide a lot of entertainment bang for your buck, which I would otherwise spend on going out to dinners/movies with the wife or traveling to friend's weddings, etc.
what does that mean?

The endless chain of trial accounts by buying plex time codes in EVE Online and adding them to an account. Basically playing and paying nothing IRL, but it requires a lot of ingame time to set things up that way. Day and night to generate the ISK needed.

And CCP allows this? wow.

Grey area, CCP allow it per individual. En masse scams & corruption are stamped out, as previous campaigns have proven.
Actually, the only F2P game I ever enjoyed was ruined by their economy and that was Mu Online way back in beta. I actually loved that game, it had stunning visuals, great gameplay, and was just plain fun. But, then I hit mid-late 30s and I couldn't get any good gear drops so I had to buy it. Everything everyone was selling, they were selling for Chaos Stones. A Chaos Stone would take literally 12-14hrs of constant grinding to find one and some pieces of equipment cost several Chaos Stones.
The game was a huge grindfest and I honestly couldn't tell you how long I would have played if the economy didn't drive me away. But, that's what drove me away.

Has it affected mine? No, I play what I want to play. I'm not downsizing due to money issues. Personally I find MMO's cheap entertainment. If I really need to save money, I know cable TV would go first, because I spend probably 10x more time playing MMO's than I do watching TV, yet cable cost me 4x the price of one MMO subscription.
Next I would cut my DVD movie buying habits, and probably go Netflix. But heck, collecting DVD is a hobby of mine so it'll be hard for me to stop.
Now do I think it may have affected other's MMO subs? Of course, but it depends. For some people, they've cut down so much that a cheap $15 / month MMO sub is about all they have left for entertainment budget per month. So you may see more people going for these MMO's rather than buying console games, pc games, going to movies, buying season tickets to sports events, etc..

Ah, MU. I would probably call it my first real MMO. Diablo II clone with great graphics, quite fun gameplay and a hideous grind for equipment, levels etcetera. Stopped playing it for the same reason, though I got into it again when a friend that I met ingame told me of a private (emulated) server. Bam!, and then I was hooked again. The server later got shut down, but I kept around in the underground MMO community quite a few years after that.
It would be interesting to see how the economy has effected the underground MMO server population...
