First Build - Need some help ! :D

Tenk575Tenk575 Member UncommonPosts: 116

Hey guys,

Just recently I decided to take a wack at building my first gaming rig. I always hear all my friends talking about doing upgrades on their computer, and it would be nice to be involved in the conversation!!

I am fairly new to the entire process. I have a basic understanding of which parts to pick for the PC to work. However, that is my primary reason of coming here. I am not as much worried about the construction process, as I am the purchasing of the hardware (part compatibility).

Thanks in advance to anyone who can take the time to help me!!

I was also wondering what SLI is all about? I read some of the comments on the video cards I was checking out..

Thanks again to anyone who can help!

    Your motherboard is Dual Channel.

You have 3 sticks of memory for Tri Channel. You only need 2.

Other than that, looks pretty good. Except, you might want to do more research on video cards. I really don't think you could have picked a worse one in that price range.

That's a good place to start, don't go by that alone. Start clicking the links there and googling "GFX Card Benchmarks".

Another note to consider: Dual Channel Mobo's work best with Dual Channel specific memory working in Dual Channel mode.

Sounds logical, but I can't tell you how easy it is to miss when I built my first rig.

Your HDD is also slow. You will be noticing considerable load times and a slower bootup. You might want jump to a 7200 rpm version for better performance.

And your powersupply is plenty for that rig.

SLI is takeing two identical video cards and installing them in the same machine and linking them with the SLI bridge. Thus you have 2 video cards that run ~80% effective its about a 50-80% boost in performance over 1.

    Much better.

But I recommend boosting your HDD before going 6GB RAM.

I would swap the 4870HD for a 5770HD(videocard), Pretty much the same performance but the 5770hd supports Eyefinity and dx11, I would also go with a WD black 7200RPM HDD.

Whoa hang on. $130 for a 750GB hard drive is terrible. Don't buy that one.
    Pick one of these instead:
    Seagate 500GB $55
    WD Black 750GB $70

For your video card, there is no reason not to buy a Radeon 5770 over a Radeon 4870.
    XFX Radeon 5770 $165

For your DVD drive, the one picked out is a DVD-ROM (read only) not a DVD burner.. you probably want to get a DVD burner for about $8 more.
    Samsung 22X DVD-R

The PSU is great, actually more than enough for the current plan.

The mobo may be more expensive than you need, for the i5 platform you can pick up good enough mobos for about $140 but the one you have is excellent if you're ok with the price ($170).

The CPU is a good processor, maybe a bit more than you would need for the video cards you're looking at but it's still a great set up. I usually spend a little more on the GPU than the CPU for gaming. For example a $165 Radeon 5770 would perform exactly the same on a $140 Phenom II as on a $200 i5-750 because the games just don't need the extra CPU power at the framerate a 5770 can push.

    I agree with noquarter.

I haven't been following hardware terribly much latelty, but I have always come from the school of thought that your biggest item should be your GPU as thats where the primary load of the game will be.

Also I noticed you dont have an after-market cooler for your CPU. You might want to look into those. Generally stock coolers are not that great. Though if the airflow in your case is good, which, two 250mm fans should make it good, then it wont likely be a problem unless you keep your computer in an enclosed area or warm room.

    Good luck!
